Hailing from Melbourne / Naarm Surprise Chef are a band who are creating a rather large buzz across the globe as well as their own backyard Working out the College of Knowledge stable which encompasses a studio as well as the record label, and is also their DJ moniker when playing out, they have a intoxicating laid back soulful sound which encompasses the funkiest of riffs, hooks and a seriously impressive rhythm section.

Their latest EP see's them enlist the unquestionable skills of Harvey Sutherland and Masters at Work who cook up both a MAW remix and a Nuyorikan Soul remix for the package. Safe to say it's a rather brilliant release which lands on the 22nd of October via @mrbongo.

We have a full interview incoming with Surprise Chef this week to talk about the release, the band and of course those remixes. A bit more then a year ago I received a message from Déni Shain, a french music producer based in Lisbon. In that mail he asked me if I would be interested in releasing music from Cabo Verde since he was close to Chico and Wilson, the 2 DJs behind Celeste Mariposa (an excellent portuguese/angolan soundsystem specialised in lusophone music). 'I can convince them to make their record collection available to you' he added. I asked him if he could send me a selection, not knowing the amount of work my request would represent. I only later found out that the three-men-team had spent a whole week to pick and choose what they thought was adequate and another few days to wash the record and digitise the music.

I received that selection in March 2013 and I haven't stopped listening to it since. I clearly remember having that wonderful feeling when songs keep growing on you the more you listen. 'Very good sign' I thought! The collection of songs I had received became the base for a whole concept and we all started criss crossing Europe and Cabo Verde looking for more music and looking for the Cap-Verdien artists we loved. Déni Shain became an important asset for the Analog Africa label, supporting us with remixes and mixes but more importantly with an addictive positive energy.

After his first mix for us, the amazing 'Ghana Soundtrack' made out of unreleased and rare tracks from the small west african musical powerhouse, here is his second instalment made of handpicked dancefloor filler. A huge shout goes to legendary african music connoisseur John Beatle, to Carlo Xavier for letting us use his fantastic edit of "O Anel"  and to my close friend Keith Slater for offering us some of the fantastic music included here.

Operating out of Melbourne, here is a group who have been showcasing jazz and diy experimentalism in a whole new light.

The four piece group have been making waves amidst funk, soul and jazz communities the world over and most recently released a nine track album via longstanding UK based imprint Mr Bongo, a label which has become an authority in the sound. 

"All News Is Good News" was released in July and was met with critical acclaim, it was well received and showcased the instrumental capabilities of a group very much on the rise. 

We invited them to piece together a mixtape, they do so in fine style.

Surprise Chef: The 'Shine a Light On' Mix

Epic Vinyls from Brazil are Rasmus and Dona Carla from Copenhagen and Rio de Janeiro.

If you don't know them yet, their DJ Set are made up of exceptional, rare Brazilian music that you have probably never heard before (except for the specialists that you may be).
They have been digging for one year to make another mix on Le Mellotron dedicated the Brazilian goddess of the sea: Iemanjá.
From a pool of 30 themed records, they selected 16 highly danceable MPB (popular Brazilian music) rarities made to celebrate life and good music.
Iemanjá is celebrated on February 2nd all over Brazil and connected to blue and white colors, rivers and oceans, white flowers, love and cleansing.

This name of this mix is ABOM-5. The 5th mixtape in their Afro Brazil Orixa Mix series - which traces the influence of african rhytms and spirituality in Brazilian music. Major MPB artists from Rio like Wando and Elza Soares are mixed with tracks from Bahia, Belem and São Paulo.
