So... Back in the day, Kurbside used to carry around a handheld cassette recorder and have it randomly rolling when we'd be out on various adventures. This song is formed around a particular cassette excerpt from a night where we encountered and befriended an exceptionally drunk diner patron who initially thought us to be an easy mark.

Our homage to Hirokazu Tanaka and one of the most influential and loved games of all time: METROID!

We love 8-bit and lo-fi stuff, so we hooked up an original Nintendo and sampled the original Metroid start screen music. It was always  one of the most ominous and epic sounding scores from back then. Also we felt that the sci-fi angle really fit with us well.

We added some bass-heavy drum elements, combined with commodore 64 sounds and scratching behind it, and the result was something both hilarious AND badass. The "blow him to pieces" scratch actually comes from the Star Wars record storybook "Droid World", which—in itself—is pretty rare and cool, so crate diggers take note.

Anyhow... We hope this both takes you back to a good, nostalgic  place, and gets your head nodding. 

Much love and respect to Hirokazu Tanaka. Thanks for the joy you brought by adding so much more than graphics alone ever could to a legendary gaming experience. We hope this is received in the manner in which it was intended.

TV and media obviously have a huge influence on all of us, regardless of whether we want to admit it or not. I'll admit that shit. I absorbed A LOT of TV as a child in the 80's. My absolute favorite show back then was Transformers. At that same time, I was also joyfully and eagerly discovering and absorbing  the new and  rapidly expanding hip-hop scene. Somehow. That's another story.

There was this one episode of Transformers that I saw in 86 as a very young kid, and I immediately loved it to death because it seemed *almost somehow aware of the 80's breakdancing/hip-hop scene. At least to my 8-year old mind.  It was called "Auto-bop" and it focused on these 3 breakdancing graffiti kids that were getting hassled by the owners and patrons of the new hot nightclub. This was not Shakespeare y'all. But I loved it. 

Whenever they would show scenes in the club, they'd have this one particular musical composition playing in the background. It was pretty interesting for an 80's cartoon, and I had also heard it used before in a club scene in G.I. JOE. I always kind of dug it even as an 8-year old, and thought, "I wish RUN DMC or Beastie Boys would rap to this."

Flash forward.

As an adult, I ended up buying the Transformers DVD boxed set because I am—at my core—an insufferable and often nostalgic dork. And, as someone who had already been making music for years, I thought, "Man, *I'M gonna fucking rap to this shit!"

So here we are. I love hip-hop. I love Transformers G1 despite its often near-unwatchable level of quality. And, now I have my hip-hop homage to my favorite childhood show. Much love to Johnny Douglas & Robert J. Walsh for captivating my young 80's-kid mind. I hope this is received in the way in which it is intended.

I should also mention that the rhymes/lyrics  have absolutely NOTHING to do with Transformers. Even my nerdiness has limits. It's more of a wink to people who know what's up.
