Way out in the Southwest of the Netherlands there was this dude I want to tell you about. A dude by the name of K-something. At least that was the handle her lovin' parents gave her, but she never had much use for it herself. This K-something, she called herself Somniac One. Now, Somniac One, that's a name no one would self-apply where I come from. But then there was a lot about Somniac One that didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. And a lot about where she came from, likewise. But then again, maybe that's why I found her so darned interestin'…

Now this record you’re about to listen to was written somewhere in 2019… Around about the time the UK had its no-deal Brexit, the Amazon was on fire, and the BPM standard in hardcore reached the peak of ridiculousness. I only mention this 'cause sometimes there's a dude. I won't say a hero, 'cause what's a hero? But sometimes there's a dude, and I'm talkin' about Somniac One here. Sometimes there's a dude who, well, she's the dude for her time 'n place, she fits right in there.

Industrial hardcore has been one of the most consistent styles that hardcore has spawned, going strong since the turn of the millennia. The same goes for The Relic, moniker of Dutch producer Maurice Pinkster, who has been a steady contributor, and a key player of the scene since its humble beginnings. 

After starting as a producer in 1994, initially releasing on various labels, he found his first home on FIX Records and Neophyte’s Symp.tom, where he released a string of influential 12”es. After Symp.tom went defunct, he created his own label Dark.Descent. in order to be able to develop The Relic – and his various other projects like Zanthrax, Dual Mechanism, Hidden Rooms (dark acid techno) and of course Cubic Nomad (from hard rhythmic IDM to serene ambience) with complete artistic freedom. 

Pushing dark and industrial hardcore and techno forward, Dark.Descent has also released prolific artists like Embrionyc, Dep Affect, Sei2ure, Sound Abuse, Starving Insect and many more; The Relic has cooperated with artists such as Dep Affect, Moleculez, Innovative, Sidephex, Mute. and remixed the likes of Neophyte, Human Resource, Mono No Aware, Sacerdos Vigilia, Traffik, Embrionyc, Somatic Responses, ▲NGST or X-Core. 

The Relic now looks back at a triptych of bunker-themed full-length albums, all pinnacles of his extra-dark, trademark sound that has brought him wide recognition across genre borders. His reputation as a DJ is also more than rock solid, and many of his killer mixes can be found online or via the infamous “Ben Harder Show” which he co-founded.
