On March 1st we celebrated the debut of Refractor On Tour in London. For those who were there, it was a night to be remembered for a long time, not only for reaching almost full capacity, but for the exceptional musical quality and the atmosphere that enveloped us.

This nearly two-hour session blends deep techno textures with progressive trance flows, reflecting the beginning of what TSUNIMAN and ANNX offered in their very first b2b inside a club.

Their connection was effortless, their dialogue in sound setting the dancefloor at the perfect temperature, embraced by a devoted crowd who chose to be there from the very first moment.

For the September edition of our mix series, we welcome Detroit artist 2lanes. His love for music began early through drumming, and he started crafting his first beats on an MPC with floppy disks while living in New York.

Shaped by his first rave experiences in New York and the energy of Detroit’s scene, 2lanes brings a pristine and immersive sound. His music often acts as a visualization of environments and stories. Whether it’s the outline of characteristic buildings in his city or tales from friends about raves, he imagines what those buildings or moments would sound like in music.

The recording he created for us takes inspiration from the many forest and outdoor festivals he has attended recently, as well as his love for extended blends of deep techno. The result is a journey that pulls you in from the very first moment and lets you drift effortlessly into the woods.

Detroit’s Craig Gonzalez was drawn to vinyl from a young age, captivated by hip hop and the underground party scene of the 1990s. This fascination quickly evolved into a lifelong passion for DJing, driven by a desire to weave rhythmic layers into compelling, personal stories. 

A self-taught artist, Gonzalez’s collection spans the rich musical evolution of Detroit, including techno, house, hip hop, funk, dnb, and a diverse range of other genres. His skills were further honed during his residency at Solar in Ann Arbor, where he shared the decks with renowned artists. Gonzalez has also been a frequent fixture at Movement and other major local events, where he’s shared the stage with legends in the electronic music scene. Since 2022, he has been a resident DJ for the Third Thursday monthly event by Paxahau, further cementing his presence in Detroit’s vibrant nightlife scene. 

Deeply influenced by the musical depth of Detroit and the hypnotic craft of global artists, Gonzalez’s style reflects a rich, interconnected network of like-minded creators. His connection to family, history, and the culture surrounding electronic music gives his sets a profound sensibility, effortlessly translating onto the dance floor.

Forest Drive West, Felix K and DB1 are LEVL. Together, they explore the murky territory between drum & bass, techno and experimental electronics, crafting a distinctive sound that defies the boundaries of genre. The trio's collaboration began with DB1 and Forest Drive West putting out music through Berlin-based Felix K’s label Hidden Hawaii, which led to the formation of LEVL: a combination of each artist’s unique production approach that creates a cohesive and innovative sound. 

LEVL's debut release, “LEVL#1”, was issued in 2019 on Arcola, a sub-label of Warp Records, a bass- and breaks-heavy record showcasing their ability to blend ambient textures with complex rhythms. “LEVL#2”, on Felix K's Nullpunkt label, further explores the intersection of ambient, drum & bass and techno.

Beyond their recorded output, LEVL brings a strong energy to live performances, delivering an immersive and genre-bending musical experience. With meticulous attention to detail, the group pushes the boundaries of electronic music through soundscapes that challenge and captivate listeners.

When Nillo and Sentidor decided to collaborate in 2015 on the album SIBÖ their aim was to create a bridge between modern electronic music and the mystical chants of Costa Rica’s indigenous tribes. Following that much-loved debut they continue the journey on SIBÖ Revisited, albeit with a cast of like-minded souls from Brazil, Japan, Mexico, USA and Germany along for the ride. These collaborators keep the beauty and purity of the original compositions at their core, while offering up new textures and environments, pushing the album’s sonic palette into unexpected new directions. 

The origins behind SIBÖ lie with Costa Rican musician, producer and ethnomusicologist Nillo (aka Johnny Gutierrez). His passion for documenting the native sounds of his home country led him to study the music of the indigenous Ngäbe tribe. After gaining access to an astonishing catalogue of recordings of the tribe he saw an opportunity to shine a light on what he calls the “beautiful musical universe of the indigenous.” Nillo had already met Brazilian producer Sentidor (aka João Carvalho) through Soundcloud - owing to a mutual respect for each other’s music - and soon they decided to work together. The foundation for their compositions came specifically via recordings of one member of the Ngäbe tribe (Unchi) whose voice acts as a spiritual guide around which Nillo and Sentidor wrap layers of electronics, percussion, João’s own vocals and sparse but effective instrumentation, creating what they call an “electronic reinterpretation of the ancestral.” 

On SIBÖ Revisited, Nillo and Sentidor asked friends from around the world to create their own interpretations of tracks from SIBÖ, offering further reinterpretations of both those original indigenous recordings and the forward-thinking productions of that release. Remixers include influential names in the global bass scene such as Chico Correa, Pigmalião and DJ FoiMao (all from Brazil), Sainte Vie and SNRNG (both from Mexico), DJ Ground (Japan) and Zouyina (USA). As Nillo explains: “This revisited version of SIBÖ’s songs is even more magical because we are able to see through the eyes of artists we admire, another perspective of our own sonic philosophy.” 

The album highlights how electronic Latin American music is changing, taking a step away from the urban capitals and their mod cons towards something sacred, a trip into the expansive jungles, mountains and rivers so prevalent in Latin America. Perhaps Nillo puts it best when describing SIBÖ Revisited: “This is a journey which joins the past with the future, a journey waiting to be danced, along the river that flows deep inside our souls.”

Peder Mannerfelt splits the difference between playful immediacy and daring experimentation. You’re as likely to find him premiering a live show at Berlin’s Atonal festival as pulling apart fabled techno meccas from Berghain to Fabric with synapse-frying precision. One minute he’s being asked to remix Björk, and the next he’s dropping EPs of non-conformist techno for Karenn’s Voam label. 

As a prolific collaborator throughout his career, Mannerfelt has veered from the orchestral tension of Roll The Dice (with Malcolm Pardon) to the anything-goes maximalism of Aasthma (with Pär Grindvik). As a producer, he’s worked on every one of Fever Ray’s acclaimed albums and live shows, as well as projects from alt music heavyweights such as Smerz, Blonde Redhead and Glasser. His Peder Mannerfelt Produktions label has become another outlet for his singular approach, presenting his work alongside similarly experimental operators like Sissel Wincent, Machine Woman, Klara Lewis and Hodge. 

More recently, his PM+ series celebrates the immediacy of club-focused tracks, and Mannerfelt thrives on the energy and community of contemporary club music. What makes him different is his response to that energy, as he pushes the music’s possibilities in wild, unpredictable directions.
