Originally composed for 8-Bit Music Theory Discord channel's Weekly Challenge. Prompt this week was to select an astronomical body to write a piece for, using an ostinato!

Pōwehi is the black hole at the center of the Messier 87 galaxy and, in 2017, was the first black hole to be captured in an image. One thing that has always captured my imagination is the concept of time dilation; black holes exert such strong gravitation that time passes slower the closer you get to the event horizon (if you’ve seen Interstellar, think of the ocean world where one hour on the planet equated to multiple Earth years). To capture this idea of time dilation, the ostinato is played by two identical synths, at first in sync with each other, and, as the piece progresses, one synth will just a bit slower and desync. The precise tempo of the slowed synth was chosen so that for every four bars, it would fall behind one sixteenth note. As a matter of artistic license, the out-of-sync synth will occasional come back up to tempo.

Same composition method as I used for Lucky Seven, but I ended up halving the tempo from 180bpm to 90bpm.  In theory they are equivalent, but this notates better in 90bpm.

Regarding the title: Last year I had so much fun creating my Halloween piece Pumpkin Hollow that I decided then and there that I would make it an annual tradition, in part as a way to measure my growth as a music-maker. And in true Halloween franchise tradition, I was to make each piece a sequel, no matter how thematically different each one might be. So expect Pumpkin Hollow 3 next year (and who knows what genre it'll be)!

Cycling Home

My latest entry in the 8-bit weeklies, and my favorite to date! This one was motivated by two things. 1 - I want orchestral black MIDI. a full orchestra playing black midi, with no shortcuts or time for such trifles as "good playability" or "good grammar". 2 - to show the versatility of the orchestra as a whole rather than winds + brass + strings + percussion, and after some arduous yet fun work, this should show all non-believers just how well the two work together.
