Lexcd is a Pittsburgh based DJ and organizer whose focus in music curation shifts between personal and communal forms of archival, connection, and experimentation. They are currently most interested in creating and supporting spaces/ events that are providing healthier shared sonic experiences and offering alternatives to standard nightlife practices. They have experimented with events at tea shops or saunas, and they have also worked on food-focused art/ sound events pushing for these alternatives. They are associated with Transit, Foodprep, and Bad Sauna's Sounds at the Sauna series. They work in the field of activism/ philanthropy.

My mix was made intuitively & luckily recorded in one take after I finished working the run-time & track arrangement :) Rather than focusing on specific tracks I wanted to share or any big picture concepts, I focused on a mood & track-to-track flow. I feel that this mix winds up diving into a sort of dreamy hazy nostalgia very reflective of the headspace I was in at the time of making it.

Liquid Mirror w/ Olive Kimoto 280425

For last week’s episode I put together a mix of modernist ballads from West Africa, primarily works from the 1970s. About half the songs gathered here are from Senegal, an epicentre of post-colonial cultural forms, featuring a capacious cosmopolitan hybridity which drew from American jazz and psychedelic rock, French chanson, Cuban bolero, Congolese rhumba, Martinician beguine, Wolof griot music, and the complex polyrhythms of Mande musical traditions. Other songs in this mix come from Mali, Guinea-Bissau, Togo, and Benin, joined in pan-African solidarity as well as sharing a modernist sensibility, fraught with both melancholy for the failure of post-colonial nationalism and a utopic yearning for social change. These songs are exemplary of Tsitsi Ella Jaji calls “stereomodernism.” in her wonderful book, Africa in Stereo.

Solid Steel (15th July) In Hour 1 we hand over to Low Jack, the Paris-based producer and DJ who has released music on labels such as L.I.E.S., In Paradisum and The Trilogy Tapes. His latest album 'Lighthouse Stories' came out on Modern Love earlier this year, inspired by footwork, turntablism, Detroit electro and ghetto house and you can catch him playing at Fabric on August 13th and Atonal Festival, Berlin on August 26th. He told us;

"I've recorded this mix, on a rap mixtape style of mixing, there's a few beat matching, there's also just some fade in fade out, with lots of interludes & skits. Most of the tracks are played at the wrong bpm (very low pitched or even sometimes high pitched). The track list contains a bunch of personal classics, records i've bought 10-15 years ago, when i started collecting records. Also contains edits or unreleased tracks of my own, or extracts from my new live show "Lighthouse Battle Breaks". More generally each of those tracks selected for this mix are representing a turntablism / beat-juggling influence even if for most of the tracks I'm pretty sure the people who did them, didn't get that idea, its just my own interpretation of it"
