"We had a pretty clear vision of what we wanted this to collaboration to sound like since the beginning and the results didn’t disappoint. Japanese band Crystal’s mixture of YMO-esque Nippon naive Pop and kraftwerkian-influenced beats tends to accidentally give birth to a romantic sound very reminiscent of Latin Freestyle. On the other hand, Latin Freestyle, Pop and that particular brand of ‘80s pre-Miami Bass is an influence more and more present in UK producer Ikonika’s (Hyperdub) work. In other words we saw Freestyle as a common bond, a contextual bridge between two production units from two very different places and scenes. One does it without even paying attention, finding inspiration it its roots, the other flirts with it in a more conscious way while bringing it to the next level. We thought this was a match made in heaven and we wanted to bring these two approaches together. The result is 100% retro-futuro-Italo-piano-shoot’em-up melancholy."

A few years ago, Moby (born Richard Melville Hall) decided that it was time for a change so he packed up and moved from his beloved New York to sunny LA. This fresh, new outlook permeates his 11th studio album, Innocents. One day, as the story goes, he was riding around town listening to “Morning Becomes Eclectic” on local radio station KCRW, and he heard a Damien Jurado song come on the air — and the rest is history. 

“Originally, ‘Almost Home’ was a fully finished song,” recalls Moby. “But I love Damien’s approach to melody and lyrics so I gave it to him as an instrumental. What he did was much better than anything I’d come up with.”

In the words of Mike Tyson, "If they pay me enough, I'll get in the ring with Jesse Perez". Legend tells it that Jesse, the latest addition to the I’m A House Gangster camp, was born in a rundown motel in Little Havana (a small Latin neighbourhood in Miami) just minutes after being conceived. Son to a local pimp (who is oddly 10 years older than Jesse), Jesse was exposed to the art of Slangin' D as a young boy. His mother, who at that time was a stage dancer for a popular local rap group called the "2 Live Crew", would work many shows for these artists and would sneak Jesse in as often as she could. Jesse's first exposure to Bass Music and Ass Clapping made a huge impression on him. 

15 years later, Jesse applied his childhood experiences towards the development of a new visionary company known as "Mr. Nice Guy". Considered as one of Miami's most promising and forward thinking companies since Bang Bros. Jesse has managed to not only run this company but also star in several successful "Mr. Nice Guy" films including "Slangin' That D", "Tales From An 8th Street Motel" and "This Hoe Gonna Get Some Dick". Homeboy don't mess around, he means business.

Talking about his tracks for his debut I’m A House Gangster release, Jesse comments, “I made these tracks solely for listening pleasure while getting pleasured, so it's cool the rest of the world will now get to enjoy them as well. No Ghost-writers were used in the making of this EP.”

At the time of writing this The Reef has 189 followers on Soundcloud, and frankly we don't' understand it. The 14 tracks available (mostly original) show a definitive style that you usually would only see from an accomplished artist with a ton of releases under their belt.   The 23 year old Swede grew up with a love for Hip-hop listening to his brothers early Wu-Tang Clan and Mobb Deep CD's.  This all is made clear when you hear his music, it sounds like sewer scenes from "Da Mystery of Chessboxin" music video look. A dark sewer with water dripping from pipes, bad air and it's dark and sweaty in a bad way leaving you feeling uncomfortable and uneasy. "Ignant"  is the lead tune off the EP and the drop is like the sound of the rainfall on an Alien planet where society is forced to live underground. "Tomb"is by far the most unplaceable, its sounds like a futuristic instrumental celebratory anthem for a rogue gregorian nomadic group in a post apocalyptical world, next up we have  "Skunk" a disturbing and dark track from start to finish. All these tunes are a fraction of what The Reef has in store for music lovers on the darker side of dance music and we can't wait to hear them all.
