The Assignment: Rework a shared recording from over 100 years ago

A beautiful recording of a violoncello solo with orchestra from 105 years ago, written around 250 years ago. Just image all that. – I first separated the music from the background noise, continued working with a noise-reduced version, and stretched it in various ways. I selected some of my favourite parts and inserted them into an overall structure. Since most of the spirit of the original was lost in the process, I inserted my most favourite part several times, for example at the beginning and end. I added some of the separated background noise back in, giving it its own space over time and finally an opportunity to fade away.

This week's Disquiet Junto was an invitation to remix a public domain recording of the 18th century composition "Nina", as performed by cellist Hans Kindler in 1920.

While commonly known as simply "Nina", the full title of the piece is actually "Tre giorni son che Nina in letto senesta" ("Nina has been lying in bed for 3 days"). After a little digging, I found the original libretto in Italian. A machine translation produced this in English:

"For three days Nina
Has been lying in bed.
Sleep is killing her,
Wake her up, for pity's sake!

And with cymbals and timpani and fifes,
Wake up my Ninetta
So she won't sleep anymore.

And while the doctor
Goes to visit her,
Ninetta, for love,
Remains in bed."

I took liberties with the text, expanding it into a mournful tale of consumption set to the mournful music of the cello, embellished with a much-abused Space Designer reverb and some acousmatics of my own devising. Best enjoyed in stereo.
