As customary, the final haiku of the year is by Kobayashi Issa. I just discovered New Year’s Day was the first day of spring in the old Japanese calendar, and it generally fell on February.

Among the four great masters of Japanese haiku, Issa was the most prolific: during his lifetime he wrote over 20,000 haiku, hundreds of tanka, and several haibun. If you want to find out more about this prolific author I suggest you check out this database of his haiku.

New Year Quartet (naviarhaiku417)

A track for Naviar Records Haiku challenge; seven days in which to create a track in response to the haiku posted. As the Haiku is about New year's day I thought it appropriate to write it on this day. For this piece I decided to do something different to my past Haiku challenges, with no brass or strings in this piece. A Piano and synth piece mainly based around Olafur Arnald's Stratus software. I decided to use a slightly dissonant key, reflecting the uncertainty of the world at the moment, whilst at the same time trying to give a more hopeful feel.

Mizuhara Shuoshi was a 20th century Japanese poet. Shuoshi rebelled against the principles of emotional detachment in haiku, which he thought limited his ability to emotionally express himself through poetry: he started a magazine called Staggerbush which focused on a more romantic, lyrical type of haiku.

A wandering poet and ascetic Zen priest, Santōka was a disciple of Ogiwara Seisensui, one of the first poets to discard the traditional use of the 5-7-5 structure in haiku.

Santōka’s poetry emphasizes the necessity of sabi (solitude) in order to achieve spiritual enlightenment and serenity.

A joyful energetic little song about squirrels, based on a 12 second AI-generated generated clip created using Riffusion where I'd typed in the lyrics: "Super mega fluffy friendly happy squirrels with their fuzzy wuzzy tails and their twitchy little noses".

You might expect AI to have made this easy - it just gave a good starting point and I've spent quite a lot of time adding to it.
