This song Mad World by Roland Orzabal (Tears for Fears) has been covered many times and used in a number of different settings.

A good friend of mine commented recently that this is a strange choice of music for an ad that’s been on TV in the UK recently.  The words (which are absent from the ad) make such a powerful description of life from the point of view of a person suffering from depression…. however this doesn’t really seem to quite fit with the theme presented in the advert.

Seeing the ad again, this has demonstrated for me just how much music can manipulate our feelings and sympathies.  So here is my version, with words and the hope that in our globally connected society, we can all become a little more aware of which of our actions contribute to the ‘madness’ in this world and which ones bring out the beauty… and then choose wisely.

This song was recording a long time ago on a whim as a quiet rant while our first baby was sleeping. I don't ususally play electric guitar, (natalie) but it was a good way to play at night without being too loud. I just looped some guitar tracks and sang the song, then Brent worked on the rest.

This is an older recording. It is one of the first songs I wrote when learning to play guitar. The percussion was done on an empty water bottle and a plastic bag.

In prison you never see yourself in a real mirror. In your cell you will find a piece of scratched, polished, stainless steel.  Your reflection is never clear. When you spend many years locked in a cell the reflection you see could age you from a very young man to a middle aged man or more with no life experiences from which you learn wisdom. Except for part of one year, Jamie has been locked from age 16 and turned 36 in January.
