London-based DJ and producer Jay Duncan collaborates with saxophonist Ben Vince on her debut release for Phantasy, introducing two wildly imaginative compositions alongside a simmering remix from Ricardo Villalobos.

From the first notes of brass, quickly melting into a lucid shuffle, it’s clear that ‘In Limbo’ exists on it’s own terms. Vince's virtuoso playing, a feature of former collaborations with the likes of Joy Orbison and Mica Levi, is here gradually manipulated by Duncan into a hugely ambitious trip. This meditative and mysterious approach draws listeners deeper into a liminal, minimal space somewhere between the Fourth World as imagined by Jon Hassell and four AM on a dancefloor in South London.

Duncan deftly raises the tension for the title track’s more percussive and arguably club-ready sibling ‘Anti-Purgatorio’, drawing out almost impossibly taut and inventive rhythms constructed around wormholes from which spill Vince’s instrumentation, washed downstream amid slippery modulations and a distinctive analogue atmosphere.

Ricardo Villalobos adds to his own superlative history of remixes with a characteristically trippy take on ‘In Limbo’. Spanning nearly fifteen-minutes, the legendary Chilean-German innovator subtly reimaginines this ambitious record in form true to both his own musical heritage as well as Duncan’s futurism.

Oliver Hafenbauer is a quietly influential artist who, for many years, shaped not only his local Frankfurt scene but also the wider electronic underground through his work with the legendary Robert Johnson club. In 2019 he stepped away from his roles there and has made his own mark. He is an accomplished DJ who takes his expert selection of house, IDM, techno and electro all around Europe, and also runs his left-of-centre Die Orakel label where artists are free to serve up their most experimental sounds. 

This week he comes live and direct into your life with a timeless mix of club-ready beats that showcase exactly what he does so well. It's a balanced cross-section of robust four-four sounds that swerve fads and eschew any frills in favour of different textures and bass weights. With over 10,000 records to his name, DJ Nobu is deeply immersed in a wealth of sounds ranging from uncomplicated club anthems to those more experimental in nature. His Future Terror parties, hypnotising sets and lean catalogue have largely cultivated a reputation for menacing techno, though lucky for his fans he’s just as adept when it comes to upbeat house. For this, his second Bassiani Podcast outing, the latter takes the stage with the Japanese polymath delivering a three hour set of light and playful beats recorded live at Horoom in early April. Mixing everything from cheesy disco to tropical synths, this is a breath of fresh air from the sought-after cult figure from Chiba.

Francis Harris’ Thresholds album dropped on his own Scissor and Thread, garnering rave reviews for an album steeped in atmospheres, drone textures and electro-acoustic explorations. 

It’s an album far removed from the dancefloor, but he’s also managed to curate a remix package from some of the most talented and boundary-pushing artists active on the fringes of the electronic music space. 

First up is Manchester resident Hidden Spheres’ remix of Earth Moves, which is flipped into a pulsating slice of electronica. 

Yu Su, the up-and-coming producer currently living in Canada, takes the same track on a different journey, resulting in a slinky, affecting piece of music that eventually falls into a deep groove.  

Speaker Music - the moniker of ‘rhythmanalyst’ DeForrest Brown, Jr., delivers two reworks of the albums title track Thresholds. The Rhythm Remix focuses on the original’s brass washes, and adds a thick, playful bass rhythm. The Studio Soul remix is more a freeform piece of audio manipulation and editing, resulting in a transportative piece of work that fully compliments the original track.
