Host Cyd Oppenheimer talks with author Jonathan Dee about writing a prologue that doesn't seem like a prologue ("I liked the idea of a kind of "smash cut" first chapter that led to the rest of the book but only in a thematic way"); about the rise and fall of the "social novel" ("The idea of dramatizing a social conflict or social problem by representing experiences on either side of that problem is a lot trickier now and that has to do with the reader's loss of faith in the magical abilities of the writer himself"); and about why fiction continues to matter in today's America ("[to remind ourselves] that the world is wide and history is long and that you can get out of the awful bubble that we're in, at least temporarily, and gain some perspective on it, by reanimating other times, other cultures, through art, through the novel in particular").

In the small town of Howland, Massachusetts, in the foothills of the Berkshires, there's one post office, one tiny library, one decrepit diner. There are the summer people -- wealthy New Yorkers there for the scenery -- and then there are the locals -- people like Mark Firth, a contractor; his brother Gerry, a real estate agent; his sister Candace, an elementary school principal. The line between the two is clear. Until it's crossed, when hedge fund manager Mark Hadi moves his family to their summer residence full-time in the wake of 9/11, and volunteers himself as mayor. He cuts tax rates to historic lows, foregoing his own salary and offering to shoulder any emergency costs. Is he the town's salvation, or does his rise herald the death of democracy? A disquisition on inequality, class, power, and politics, this novel breaks open the American Dream, seeking to see what, if anything, is at its core.

Much has been speculated as to what Dook Walt Jr. is, was, and is yet to be. Once thought to be but a single man, it has been revealed to us that the Dookster is in fact many in concordance. The souls of Jake Brown, Cooper Twit, John Hooker, and Jonathan Kaufmann were all subsumed into the synth-based sanctimony which manifests as Dook Walt Jr. and remain entwined to this day. This super-organism purveys it's signature brand of twinkling twilit synth pop with a knowing dash of absurdist abandon, like Depeche Mode if Depeche Mode had met a a christian college.

London-based producer/songwriter T. Evann is today releasing ‘Undercover Women’, the latest single to be lifted from his incoming ‘Headblush’ EP, due out December 8th on Nice Guys Records. Out today, ‘Undercover Women’ deals in a gritty, funk-indebted psych-pop, driven by crisp instrumentals, a fast-moving groove and T. Evann’s infectious vocals. 

Talking about the incoming ‘Headblush’ EP, T. Evann says: “‘Headblush’ as a whole is essentially a selection of tales on the human thought process and how it tries to adapt with changes and hurdles in life. Ranging from global changes like pandemics and climate change, to more personal hurdles like creative blocks and sexuality.” ‘Undercover Women’, he says, “looks at the complex world of human sexuality. It tells the story of someone who gets themselves into a situation that makes them question their own sexual preferences - something that they may have been hiding from themselves. A lot of people may not feel comfortable openly talking about it - this is an ode to these people.”

Melbourne’s Cool Sounds make records that move deftly and playfully through indie-rock, pop, and alt-country. The band are defined by their signature guitar lines, as catchy as any chorus, as well as a beloved live show that sees six musicians crowded onstage. Lead singer and songwriter Dainis Lacey has been making music as Cool Sounds for years, but the band found a unique sound on their 2018 album Cactus Country and 2019’s More To Enjoy, which was nominated for the AIR Award for Best Independent Country Album. On Bystander, the new album out February 12, Cool Sounds are more attuned to their surroundings than ever: written during a European summer and recorded in three weeks over the following Australian one, Bystander isn’t always as laid back as the warm weather might suggest. With more of a focus on lyrics than ever before, Bystander, is at turns introspective, self-aware, irreverent and unflinchingly observant. All of the band’s essential elements are here – those guitar licks, vocal melodies that dip and spike then smooth out, and clever, understated rhythmic changes – but as lyrics are brought to the forefront, the band’s agile, elastic arrangements feel all the more essential.
