I've been thinking about life lately; where I've been, where I am and where I'm going. I've been thinking about the musical traditions and history that involve our gay culture and subculture. I consider myself so fortunate to have come of age when I did. The second Summer of Love from the summer of '88 had recently happened and ballooned into a full-on worldwide phenomenon resulting in music that was being produced at the time that was melodic, heartfelt and emotionally rich. Those were the "golden years" musically. I entered gay (sub)culture in the mid-90's and I was largely shaped by Susan Morabito, Michael Fierman, BUC, Jimmy Gomez, Sasha, John Digweed, the Brothers In Rhythm and too many more to count. These were (are) DJs that taught me to tell stories through music. Music ended up changing as the decade moved along, but I didn't (musically). So that's where I was. But where am I now? I'm proud to say very much the same place I always was. That being said...I pride myself on playing *only* new releases by current superstars or emerging artists. So I'm constantly looking backwards with a remembrance of the traditions and history that I came from but with my eye firmly on the who and what of now. Where will I will be in the future? I can't say exactly. But if history serves as a guide....I do know. Exactly.

Sophisticated Morning 80

When I first started DJing in my early 20s I had no idea of the magical ride I was about to embark upon. Few things seem to be forever, but one thing that I've discovered as the years have rolled along...is that there are two things that have been "forever" in my life:  my drive to deliver love and joy through music and also the enduring friendships that I share with so many of you through that music.  To say I'm grateful for both would truly be the greatest understatement ever made.  So...let me thank you for sharing this incredible life journey with me by delivering another set to touch your heart.  I sometimes pinch myself to make sure it's all real.  Luckily..it IS.  OK.  Enough of my mushy talk.  Let's get on to the music.  This latest Chill mix is a collection of what I call "heart-tuggers".  These songs get right down into your core, touching you in the most happy and loving way.  I hope you agree with me and that that joy will "get" you as you listen. Sophisticated Chill 10

I was lucky enough to have come of age during the glory years of the 90s when clubbing was in it's youthful years and it wasn't pounding beats far into the next morning/day.  During those years the transition from late night to the early morning hours at clubs and parties were notable for the slowing of the BPM tempo as the music settled into a melodic and emotionally-rich groove.  One could hear and dance to the most spine-chilling music imaginable  as the DJ (me) slowly allowed the crowds to come down from the ecstatic euphoria from the peak of the night.  Those morning time hours were and still are my favorite aspect of the journey.  Fast forward to now:  these Sophisticated Chill sets are largely a result of my having come of age during that time and are my nod to it all.  One important note is that all the music on these sets is fresh and new.  Although the style of music is a nod to the past...the actual music is a nod to the here and now.  Times have changed and I have too.  But what hasn't changed is my commitment to providing you, my listeners, touching and emotionally uplifting music whether you be on a dance floor at 6AM or you're cleaning your house, going for a run, Flagging in your living room or driving home from a long day at work.  This is music that transcends atmospheres.  I hope that you receive it with as much joy as I give it after having conceived and composed it.  This is my gift and my labor of love for you.  From my heart...to your ears.

You Are My Friend / Sylvester (1985) — 

Coming in at 123 beats per minute, the opening track of this continuous mix is a complete rework of Sylvester’s iconic tribute to his relationship with his backup singers Martha Wash and Izora Rhodes-Armstead (aka “The Weather Girls” and “Two Tons O' Fun”). The song's lyrics express themes of love, friendship, and loyalty, with Sylvester proclaiming his devotion to cherished companions. 

The original version (not a dance track), renowned for its energy and emotional depth, was recorded in front of a live audience at the San Francisco War Memorial Opera House in 1981.  It's considered one of the highlights of his career and remains a cherished moment in music history. The reimagined version is a complete rework that is sure to please.  

Tell Me / Razor-N-Tape (2021) —

This is a standout track characterized by its infectious groove, funky bass line, and soulful vocals. It captures the essence of classic disco while incorporating modern production techniques. It dovetails nicely with Sylvester’s “You Are My Friend”.

I Just Can’t Get Enough / Herd & Fitz ft. Abigail Bailey (2006) — 

This dance floor anthem features an infectious rhythm, uplifting vibe, catchy melodies, and Bailey's amazingly soulful vocals. Released in 2006, the song gained significant success in the dance music scene and became a favorite in clubs and on radio playlists.

Can You Feel It / The Jacksons (1980) — 

Produced by legendary producer Quincy Jones and initially released in 1980, this uplifting and anthemic rework presents polished and powerful vocals and a catchy melody that stands the test of time. "Can You Feel It?" exudes a feeling of optimism and hope for a brighter future. The lyrics paint a picture of a world where people come together to create positive change and overcome adversity.

September and You / Earth, Wind, and Fire vs. Alyx Ander (1978) —

 Incorporating modern production techniques, electronic elements, and some outstanding new vocal arrangements and instrumental layers, this mashup combines elements of the late 70’s Earth, Wind & Fire track, "September”, with beats from the San Francisco-based designer, photographer and remixer, Alyx Andre. The reengineered piece has a fresh sound that appeals to a new generation of listeners while paying homage to the original.

Let’s Go ‘Round Again / Average White Band (1980) — 

This flashback track from Scottish funk and R&B band Average White Band conveys themes of love, reconciliation, and the desire to start anew in a relationship. Its upbeat tempo and infectious rhythm make it a favorite among funk and soul music fans, and this rendition is characterized by its catchy melody, smooth vocals, and funky groove.  

Wear It Out / Starguard (1979) — 

The final track in this mix is from DJ Pete Refreq, who works his digital layering and remixing talents on this late seventies dance track characterized by an infectious groove, catchy melody, and anthemic vocals by band members, Rochelle Runnells, Debra Anderson, and Janice Williams.
