‘Rap Tradition’ is not only a title but a mission statement as guest vocalist Phill Most leads the fast-rap renaissance. Fondly recalling an era of innovation and the competitive spirit of the battle, the track is a lyrical ode the genre’s traditions. Sitting atop a pounding drum track which is equal parts crisp 2013 production and homage to the classic beat makers of the late ‘80s, deft wordplay weaves in and out of punchy drums, horn stabs, hints of hammond and a captivating bass groove. With a nod to ‘80s greats 45 King and Marley Marl, it’s a track which follows in the footsteps of those playfully keeping their tradition alive: NuMark, DJ Format, Cut Chemist et al.

The Getup are more than your average Hammond Funk outfit and this track proves it. A bubbling bass line kicks the track into a killer up tempo funk groove, having you reaching for the volume knob to crank it up as the first verse bursts out.  The track takes on a whole new dimension as the chorus reveals a four-on-the-floor solid dance groove, with Jamiroqui-esque tasty chord changes, and then the horns stab us back into the next verse.  A percussive, reverberant Hammond solo takes us into a drum break that is DJ and sampler's heaven, before the tunes rounds out with a double chorus and ends on more punchy stabs……. a midtempo vocal workout showcasing the sheer musicality of the band…….funk of the highest order!

Brooklyn's Breakdown Brass dropped yet another killer 45! They've unleashed an original juggernaut entitled "Harrow", a follow-up to their smash debut 45 "Monmouth b/w Next Episode" (Kept Records) and sophomore 45 "The Horseman b/w Mary Jane" (Mixto Music). Driving, dirty horns are punctuated by intense trombone and baritone sax solos - prepare your stank face.

The B-side "Nautilus (Hijacked)" is a dance-floor burner that pays homage to Bob James, whose track Nautilus has been heavily sampled by Slick Rick, Eric B & Rakim, Run-DMC, A Tribe Called Quest, Onyx, Wu Tang Clan, Big L, Pete Rock and about 300 others. Throw in some Herbie Mann/Beatnuts and you got yourself a hit!

The members of Breakdown Brass stay busy - touring and recording with Ikebe Shakedown, Antibalas, Lee Fields, Sharon Jones, Charles Bradley, Monophonics and many others. Led by Nadav Nirenberg on trombone, their unique combination of heavy Afro-Funk with the sizzle of Balkan Brass has caught the eye of Gilles Peterson, NPR, BBC and more.
