  Well folks, it's that time of year again. It's time for the Eclectic Collective to take stock of the fruits of the year previous, and reflect on what making music together means to all of us. We hope you all take a chunk of time and indulge in our gift to you. We wanted to address every one of our SoundCloud friends with our voices as an intimate way to connect with each of you.
  This has become a tradition within the EC now that we've made it to our second (and a half) year of making music together. For the second time, JJ asked our friend and sometimes collaborator Jeff (Stonerjazz) to ask some interview questions of us. Then, we all came up with the answers and sent them to JJ to assemble the project.
  This mighty music machine we've created, that manages to release a new song every Friday, wouldn't mean anything if no one was listening to us. Which is why we want to extend our very sincere thanks to you for tuning in and supporting our efforts. If one other person gets joy from our music, that's such a huge accomplishment. However, it really feels like a bunch of people whom we really respect are digging what we're doing, which feels truly humbling and fulfilling. 
  With that, we hope you enjoy hearing us voice our thoughts over the highlights of our musical year as much as we enjoyed a year rich in music and comradery. Happy New Year!

The song image was taken just under a year ago over the back wall of my garden. A beautiful winter morning. So the shrubs are leafless and the mist is quite prominent in a foreground darkened by the rising sun. It's an unedited photo and for this piece I guess shows how looks can be deceiving... And the camera can lie when tying imagery to an idea 💡 Movie makers make careers of it convincing us of their imagined realities... The pic is totally Terminator 2 though minus the playground and fence... haha 😆 😎

If we find an end to something for the human condition, let's make it fear. If we let go of our fear then a lot more becomes clear and beautiful about this world. As we continue in an age of constant over stimulation and a generation that has grown up to learn only that, I believe more then ever we have to try and teach younger people that it's nature that will stimulate our own internal balance and for them to realise that maybe they need to learn to not just go with the crowd of humans taking those doses of fruitless over stimulation. To avoid an actual climactic apocalypse we all need to actually synchronise with Earth and learn it. I don't believe they will find that glued to an ever more biased internet that young minds must find it difficult to navigate without switching off to what is important... Earth and themselves

I feel we find that by becoming more aware of truth that is relevant to our time and our experience. The Internet and media can be difficult to navigate as it is full of so much misinformation and power circles within society wanting to keep people in fear mode. It's easier to profit from that and retain the power of imposition. We need to start asking the right questions about our reality and stop listening to people planting imperfect truths in our heads.
We all have a slightly different version of the truth, but we only find it by asking ourselves that version honestly 🧬 That's how knowledge evolves, by combining those new truths, not by parroting what other people convinced you was true

A lot of scholars are starting to talk about how we are echoing periods that ended in destruction, but all those previous periods didn't have widespread good information like we have for people to train their mindset to the evolving reality. Yes we have the disease of misinformation to tilt away from, but the good stuff is there and more and more of us have access to it if we just look. That's the big difference this time for me... We have the power now of amazing good information to form a conscientious collective and become conscientious individuals. We don't have to be told what's up anymore and we don't have to be afraid of our changing world. As Eddie Veddar said...  "It's evolution baby" 🍼

  Josh had the idea for doing a traditional Palestinian song, as he is an avid fan of their music. He wanted to raise awareness of this music and everyone in the band was immediately on board with this idea, and set about to make it happen. 
  Mark, who is an expert percussionist, learned a basic traditional Palestinian drum pattern, in a very authentic fashion. He laid it down, along with an Arabic sounding modal melody line portrayed by the quanun, which is a kind of zither. Josh found this pattern fascinating, and added his five string fretless bass to the it shortly after. Carl jumped in very shortly thereafter, and came up with some really amazing vocal melodies, as well as wonderfully prescient lyrics. He even learned more than several phrases in Arabic, which he sang in there, too. We were all very impressed by this, of course.
  JJ was next up, adding his magical, melodic, and exotic saz, shakuhachi, and synth to the mix. Ken threw in next, adding his perfectly timed brass and Chinese percussion to the mix, too. Last, but certainly not least, Stephen recorded his subtle, exotic, traditional sitar to the piece. 
  Once we had it all recorded, we turned it over to Mark for a mix, as the whole thing is really his baby. Stephen mastered it, though, as he is our resident professional producer.
  Our hope is that this song inspires you to dig into Palestinian music, and through that, you recognize the magic and the humanity of millions of Palestinian people who are suffering unimaginably right now. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed creating it.

Music is our key to permanant peace on planet Earth in my view. If written thoughfully, it is our unimposing tool where we can share our different cultures like EC have done here to celebrate with our Palestinian friends stylistically the light of their music. I don't speak Arabic so I hope I don't offend anyone but I learned the Arabic as best as I could phonetically. It's done with the best of intentions . The eight Arabic lines are famous proverbs and show us how similarly all of our truths evolve from our hearts and souls

A tribal tune for good conversation. We've lived with anti intellectual bullshit for way too long and modern forms of it are starting to poison the world through autocratic populist liers. When you have no true power of knowledge yet still want to cling to power and control people the only way you retain power is end the ability for us to have conversations. Not in my world!
This world isn't full of bad people it's full of bad ideas that mostly good people get taken in by!

23 February 1975
Bill says, " A considerable time had lapsed since I had written any poetry probably due to the shock of my heart attack. In fact I was not sure whether I could still do so. It was a great comfort to me therefore to achieve this poem after an elapse of nearly five years.
The theme of civil rights comes from the northern troubles. I got the idea while out for a walk around Silverpine, the lovely little roads now sadly changed by housing development. Many lovely old trees cut down while others await their fate with 'Security' and 'Acquired' boards ignominiously nailed to them.

Bill lived for nine more years after writing those words. It's interesting how the health shock effected his creativity and so nice he re-found it. Maybe a nice reminder to use our time well 🔆


I really love the third stanza. "Where are the lovers you shaded?..." Bill is looking at these condemned trees and wondering about the beautiful unconditional love it showed to people who are now no where to be seen when the trees need them. For me this wraps up what I've learned and had confirmed from Papa's poetry. Humans use the planet but get lost in our own pleasure and forget about what actually keeps us alive and what makes this such a wonderful planet to be on and that we do get to share. We share it with all the trees and eachother. We are however the only ones with either the intelligence to save it from ourselves or stay blinded and condemn it like these trees were condemned to their doom. Thanks Papa


This in my opinion is why laws against single use plastics and similar environmental saviours are so important. When idiosy decides to reverse them on a whim and because of only economics the indifference grows collectively and we lose our focus on the tree and the system as a whole. We then also forget that in focusing on the welfare of the tree, we focus on our own welfare. It's easy to forget this when we don't experience a direct relatable suffering however compassion towards the system still has our answers to a smoother future along side our dear tree friends 🫛

This cover of the CCR version of this Screaming Jay Hawkins classic began as an idea Josh had for Eclectic Collective putting on a musical Halloween costume. He was inspired by his favorite band, Phish, who cover an entire album every Halloween as a musical costume. Although, which song we covered was up for debate from the start. 
  Once we decided on a song, Josh laid down the skeleton for it on his '71 SG. Once we had a framework to work with, Ken laid down his rocking drums, followed by Josh completing the rhythm section by adding his trusty P-bass. Even though the song was now in its infancy, Carl summoned all his Halloween spirit for his dynamic vocal performance.  
  Now that it was sounding like a real song, JJ dropped both the key piano part, as well as his expressive organ in there, too. Mark wasn't far behind, adding his magic via the sax to the solo section, and strings in the third verse. Stephen came through with the spooky tremolo guitar and the fiery first half of the guitar solo in the solo section right after. And to put the cherry on the musical sundae, Tez brought the lightning down for the second half of the guitar solo, as well as the solo work that leads the whole way to the end.
  We all enjoyed bringing this classic song back to life, and doing it in the spirit of what may be the most fun holiday on the callendar. We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed creating it. Happy Halloween!

In 2006, my head wasn't in a good place. I had just come out of a relationship and couldn't find my zen so I decided to leg it to Nepal on my tod to find it. This song is paying homage to the trek I went on around Annapurna. It took 16 days and we walked 15-20 km a day. The highest point you get to is 5416m and it's called the Thorung La pass. You aclimatise at 4800m for a day and then up over the most beautiful place I've ever been and seen. Although there is no rope climbing it's still not easy. In 2014, freak weather took 43 poor souls doing what I got to do safely so this is dedicated to them. Rest in peace 🤍🧬

I found out a lot about myself there man and I'm ever grateful for that! I was 9 years into life with a mobile phone so that disconnection from the world of signal and internet was extremely liberating and I'd highly recommend it.
If life allows, I'll be back there again before I die...

I discovered a strength I didn't know I had. That was largely fed by the strength I saw in the Nepali people that before seeing the way they lived I wouldn't have thought was possible. Elderly people carrying weights of food and supplies that I could barely lift up the mountain with ease. The people are quite removed from material attachment too and generally show a deeper affection because of that. This is something I took home and I think as best as I can try and live nowadays. I don't really do things I don't truly need anymore... I guess musical equipment is the exception although the majority of my gear I have for 20 plus years anyways

I feel very lucky to live in a part of the world that allowed me to to do that trip at all as I'm sure the majority of humans on the planet cannot just make that decision on a whim and leave home for a reset

In my teens I read all of Carlos Castaneda's books. Carlos penned his philosophies in what is likely a fictitious story of fictitious characters where he teaches shamanism. Whether or not Don Juan was a real person and nagual to Carlos doesn't matter to me, he still shared some amazing truths on existence through his experience and imagination.

When reading the books I listened to one album. Good Gods Urge by Porno for Pyros. It's a very interesting nugget on association and musical memory for me as that album still to this day brings me back to the world of Don Juan whenever I listen to it.

This is meant to be a messy song to try and get through a song celebrating its own mistakes. We spend a great deal of our lives trying to paint this perfect picture of ourselves to people, a learned helplessness maybe amplified by celebrity image. In reality it's our mistakes that make us and allow us realise what we want from life yet we only really share and show an interest in each other's "successes"

Success is a mindset, no matter what we believe in the world of materialism and a meritocracy based on things. Many depressed rich people and happy poor people prove this concept everyday. Success is a feeling of contentness with your universe in my view and we could maybe learn more from each other with more real value if we didn't advertise fake versions of ourselves so much. Nobody is perfect but every day many millions of people see how "the grass is greener" for all of their followers on social media. For the majority of content offered, it's a fake selective reality. People will question themselves being taken in by this striving for these false depictions of their peers people project. Social media is anything but that. It was a great idea and can be a positive thing for humanity but until profit is removed from this connectivity it only amplifies vanity in us and unrealistic targets that people strive for. Who wants to be the abnormal perfect image of a friend!

Life getting a bit dry in Iran at the mo so this is a song wish for some rain to arrive there. I realised making the song that Iran is an anagram of Rain which for a wordie was a neat discovery!

Musical tip
I use a keyboard played choir line as a guide for my voice at times during the recording process. I match it and then delete the keyboard guide. It's a handy way of nailing the falsetto and ending up with nothing artificial in your piece.

Subsequent takes then generally allow for better expression on pitch changes and economy of breath as you become your own reference and can on the fly realise where you can improve on the previous take.

In a land where we have to sidestep so much artificial singing sold as whatever.... I think it's worth pointing out the uniqueness of our voices...

My music teacher, Mr Kelly used to say the human voice is the most beautiful musical instrument of them all. I tend to agree with him.

What is amazing about our voices is no one voice is the same. Finding your voice in the sense you get it to a point where you enjoy the result is a challenge for most of us but this technique is a very nice way of using the tools well to end up with a completely natural result and also for pushing the boat out on your range and technique. It also makes you more compositionally acute as you are thinking about the notes you are singing and referencing them with another instrument, so both vocal and instrument expression sees improvement.

This is a song I probably would have never written let alone released in the microcosm of my own ego before having kids. Now I have kids, all the goodies are fair game no matter style ✅♻️

Also, Multi genre is something I've gone head first into in the face of computer programs being able to short cut the creative process for people to get there. Whether you empower those projects of plagarism or not is your own perogitive but I like to show it's possible, with practice to deliver yourself any style at all from your own abilities. I don't mean to sound like I'm blowing my own trumpet, but in the face of these tools we have now I think it's important to highlight that you do not need them and I would argue you get much purer original results striving to get the result yourself for every single bit of a creative piece. That's art... Asking yourself, how can I express what I am feeling? How can I develop the skill to do that expression. Remember ai has all been programmed by works made by humans, we are humans so I'd suggest considering not being limited by it and seeing what your body says instead of what the program guesses you might want based on what is likely a model build on plagarism to start with. Plagarism aside, which is the deal breaker for me, even the humans used to program them, it was their feelings, not yours, so are you really expressing anything of substance at all? I guess thats a personal conclusion so I can't speak for prompters but it's certainly worth thinking about properly and announcing that by using it you are evolving music to me is fairly narrow-minded and kind of spits on the face of artists that work their lives to generate unique expressions through art by real feelings and sacrifice through skill development.

For this idea I sat having my morning coffee & my youngest daughter Alma had just been amazed by Elfie showing up from the north pole. So I in my head said, feck it I'm writing a Christmas song. I sat there imagining it first and I had Frank Sinatra buzzing around my head. It's actually the first time I hummed the song first, recorded the hum and then built the music around it as I wanted to honour what was in my head. I believe that was a valid part of Michael Jacksons process too, he would literally humm a part to be translated to an instrument. If you have a solid ear and good reference pitch I can vouch for that, using your voice to seed melodies is a great way of expanding the result and not being limited by the more difficult expression on the instrument itself right off the bat.

The track is about us beings the ghosts in the technology code. We are merging ever more with it. I noticed someone suggest, destroy the data centers in a comedy sketch. It's interesting to think about it going back that short few years. Although it ain't going to happen, starting the internet again knowing how detrimental social media is for the the majority and how fundamentally materialistic tech aides intensifying in us... Not a bad idea.

Carl came up with this song at the beginning of November on his acoustic guitar, and shared it with the rest of us shortly after. Carl is a songwriting supernova, in case you're unfamiliar with our newest addition to the team. We're always excited and grateful to get to work on his music. 
  Mark was first to add his parts, although he tweaked them throughout the process. His work can be heard in the dramatic string arrangement and mellotron at the crescendo. Josh was next to jump in, adding his new upright bass to the song. He played not only the plucked part, but the bowed part in the strings section, too. Ken came along next with his perfect drums to complete the rhythm section. JJ wanted in on this, too, so he added the foundational piano you hear throughout. Last, but not least, Stephen dropped in his electrifying guitar solo and the accompanying textural chords using is Danelectro baritone guitar, followed at the very end by his magical e-bow part. 
  Once it was all in the bag, we asked Tez to produce and mix it for us, which he did in his always expert fashion. 
  This is our latest song of which Carl is the author. He's been making music with us for the past half a year now, and we can't get enough of his abundant creativity. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed creating it.
  Also, Carl had this to say about his lyrics, "Labels and putting each other in a particular box is causing big problems on the planet. The song's meaning is born from trying to take labels out of our lessons. In a polarized world, the song pines how we will likely learn lessons properly if we leave ego out of what we are trying to learn. Maybe our art has more relevance for future generations if we do that instead of bolting it to the current people or ideas causing us problems."

This song began its life when Chris put ass to chair and came up with it a while back. This is the latest of the massive song collection he laid on Eclectic Collective about a month and a half ago. Be prepared to hear a lot more of his songs coming through our fingers and voices, because we now have a plethora of great material from him. So, Chris came up with this arrangement on his acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and synth, but it was a pretty solid composition, even by his standards, and it had the magic already baked in.
  The first one of us to grab a hold of it was Carl, who immediately heard his vocal part, which he supplied with his always striking lyrics. JJ was the first instrumentalist to add his part, laying in the delightful organ, electric piano, and synth you hear throughout. Josh came out swinging next, adding his upright bass, which he bowed. Mark came along shortly after, adding his dramatic timpani, enchanting steel pan, cool triangle, arpeggiated synth, and synth effects to the mix. He also did some major editing, making room for Stephen's guitar solo, and adjusting some parts at the end. Mark also added some backing vocals, quoting George Harrison's Here Comes the Sun. If you listen closely, you can hear his Easter eggs in there. 
  At this point, the song sounded almost classical, especially Josh's bowed bass part. However, Ken still had something to say in here, adding his remarkable, driving drums to the whole thing. Josh, recognizing the sea change this created, added his fretless four-string to match Ken's kick. Stephen was able to blend the two in the production phase. But not before installing his absolutely thrilling electric guitar solo in there. Stephen did a wonderful job of producing, mixing, and mastering this for us, as always, when it was all in the can.
  This is the first song Carl has gotten to sing that Chris has written. We're all super excited to unleash this combo on the world. This song reminds Josh of one of his favorite bands, The Flaming Lips, too, which makes it a special treat for him, as well. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed making it.

Nordic Ninjas is in for a service. This song is written for artists Janne Hennie from Norway and Little Man from Denmark. They have some fabulous collaborations out there together.
The 'biggest man' is Little man and 'Nee Ninja Hen' is an angram for Janne's name.
I wrote it for them early in my pro active SoundCloud life as an artist and it tries to appreciate the confirmation we give each other here. Making music can be hard, as we feel it making it and I guess the goal is also to make other people think and feel the good that you feel with it creating it. For me, there's always been a blurred line of the good emotion I get from my music and whether that would ever translate to others feeling that too. SoundCloud made me realize that maybe the feelings do get translated for others too. The feedback somewhat confirms that but it's the realisation of how many incredible artists that are out there living similar creative lives that's the more powerful confirmation for me. This connectivity also shares this constant inspiration of different approaches to writing, melody making, rhythm and producing effectively upgrading our abilities by embracing the work. I'm ever grateful to SoundCloud as the link to so much fabulous talent and so much amazing learning of what I love. Making music. This song is for my Grandad, Bill Stapleton aka Papa. He passed when I was four but between the stories his large family and friends have told about him over the years and the poems he left us, I feel like I know him better then I should. He was way ahead of his time on many fronts. A true genius and taught in ways that encouraged you to discover something for yourself.

Bill was a Captain in the army and also pioneered both the sound recording and film businesses as one of the entrapeneurs that evolved those industries early on in Ireland.

I've done my best to turn his poems into songs to try and give them a more widely embraced media in our modern day.

This the first time I've tried getting a song done about him. The light by his side in the lyrics is my Nana, Eileen. Eileen means light and Nana taught me some piano early on in my musical journey so I'm always thinking of her when tinkling on the keys. Nana was a fabulous player and an amazing singer too and my Grandparents met when Bill was travelling the country recording trad musicians which was a very unique service back then and possibly the only version of a service like that at the time in Ireland.

The Christmas pie reference is about a pie competition he setup in the family. It initally started around Halloween where Bill would build a pie full of sweets for the kids and a string with each of their names on the end. They would pull and the pie would open with surprises and whatever trick he had built in. This evolved into a Christmas tradition with a trophy where each family would make a pie and the winner would hold the pie trophy until the next year.

Bill was a big techie. However he never saw the internet. He would have been in his element with that tool at his disposal and also I'd imagine he would get whatever was possible out of AI if he was alive to witness it's power and potential. It's fascinating to compare the obvious wealth of knowledge he taught himself throughout his life and to us now with so much good information at our disposal. We need to be wise to sift through the bad info pushed upon us by algorithms, however, when we wander our way out of the weeds, we have a gold mine of good stuff right there for free. Papa would have been amazed by that and it's nice to get some of his sentiment recorded here even if it's just a drop or two

In the past I guess humans had an excuse with the lack of education and questionable morality due to being unaware of th global and existential consequences of our actions whether it was pollution or killing other life.

Today, we have no excuse. The qualified minds have taught us the implications of our collective impact on the planet and the growing list of niches of life we have directly wiped out by our presence here and the way we choose to live.

With protectionism on the rise within political systems we have the perfect storm of ignorance towards the problems our beings are not evolved enough to comprehend and appreciate fully. We are small animals that respond to our direct environment and that has unfortunely intensivised us zoning out with our algorithmically fed small version of the world through the narrow amount of information many offer themselves through the internet or through listening to people of narrow minded viewpoints largely governed by special interests wanting to keep status quos for profiteering.

We only get on top of these global issues when we transcend making decisions for our own countries and start making hard decisions for the survival of humans on the planet as a whole. Appreciating that is hard as we have not evolved to think outside our own direct local experience. Gaia theory suggests we need to treat us as part of the whole system and so far we treat ourselves as the system and screw everything else. That selfishness will come back to bite us unless we start levelling the wealth amoungst the human population. That levelling should stop poorer countries acting desperately for resources and making things worse as a result, exactly what so called developed countries did when they were in that position years ago so that's a natural human reaction to local survival.
AI can help us but we may need to take it off the profiteers and develop it collectively for that to become a net positive for humanity and to accelerate humans towards a point of living balanced lives with all other niches on the planet.
We have done a terrible job collectively with intelligence so far hence the opportunism that is so easily sown around the world going against the direction we need to be headed to fix things. So maybe AI developed ethically can help us both as a better spreader of real knowledge and hence education and to help make calculated decisions for the planet as opposed to individual countries which too many still tend to be governed by xenophobia and protectionism. Education is key

A little out of my depth here but that should turn good with some practice....

This initially started out intending to not have lyrics but they wouldn't go away so...
 try and open my voice up to some new sounds and range. I always played guitar along to the choir when I was young, so I never trained that side of my voice as a kid aside from singing along to stuff in my own time. No time like the present.

Plan is to get better a building harmony and also discover how particular vowels and consonants are limited or open relative to each other range wise. Apparently that's a thing where certain sounds within words are easier to deliver at your upper range vs other sounds. I'd like to become more aware of what those sounds and voicing are and maybe factor that into the writing too more purposefully and use syllables suited to the top and bottom of my range if I'm struggling on a particular word.


Sound notes
first note is an Oooo seems to be easier to falsetto, maybe because the lips are closed and the air flow is more controlled where as an Ahhhh your mouth is open and you are more likely to get a rush of air and controlling that is maybe harder with finesse and without losing the breath too soon

Of artists I've loved for a long time, Patrick James Grossi, stage name 'Active Child' would be the closest influence for honing and justifying music like this. He sang in a choir from early age and became a harpist in college too. He is a fabulous song writer and takes falsetto and harp into modern music like no other for my ears. This is a project that JJ has been putting together for us as a gift every year for the past couple of years, which gives us a way to speak to all our fans, friends, associates on SoundCloud. It is a compilation of a bunch of our songs from the past year, over which we all answer some questions in an interview style. This year, our interviewer is SunnyBeck, although it has been Jeff of Stonerjazz fame in the past. We have collaborated on a few songs with her, and now consider her part of the Eclectic Collective family.
We know this is a very long project, so please listen to as much as you want, and know this is as much for our collective listening pleasure as it is to show the world. The time stamps of all out appearances are included with our names, so if you just want to listen to a particular person while commenting on their page, please feel free to do that, too.
This is a time of year to take stock in and reflect on the past year. We all have a lot for which to be thankful. We added Carl to the group this year, which has been a delight to all of us. He and Chris have given us so many amazing compositions to work with. Chris is a full member of the band, although he doesn't appear as an interviewee in the documentary.
We also want to sincerely thank the other collaborators who have shared their magic with us this year. They include Jonathan Beckenstein, Jeff Roberts, MahanMahan, Didier Burli, Tea R. Sea, Mark F, E Ruizzo, Saskiagoethals, Joe Stroffolino, Sean Smith, Steve's Planet, Gaz Brownie, Nyla K, Scratch Kelly, and Single Use & Recycled. They are all spectacular musicians to whom we're very grateful.
Most of all, though, we're sincerely thankful for each one of you out there with whom we've been able to share our music and make a personal connection with. Your music delights us, as well, and we know that all the attention we get is actually just musicians like us checking poking their heads out and reaching for the same connection.
