Came back to Hopkins, Belize just in time for the jam night at Driftwood.  Aurelio Martinez, the biggest international Garifuna singer, just happened to drop by (filming with a beer documentary team..haha, huh?), and joined us for an incredible set.  I'd seen him play earlier at Paul Nabor's birthday in PG, so it was a pretty special privilege to play together.  And the Lebaha drummers are always a trip, (remember them from this...? http://soundcloud.com/biomigrant/belize-by-the-sea-with-c-willz).

The song speaks to Pelicans, saying, Lend me your wings, so I can fly like you...

This song was simply meant to happen. Arrived in Belize to Punta Gorda, where I met the legendary Paul Nabor (see Roots Future Digital), and at his birthday bash, met the Wagirale drummers, who invited me up to Dangriga on their bangin' bus the following morning. Through a crazy chain of events, then met Biggs, who runs a studio in 'Griga, and one rainy morning we started work on this beat, which began as a tribute to a homey of his who just got stabbed over some bullshit. Then Reckless (who recorded on Andy Palacio's Watina album) showed up in the studio, and layed in the verses addressing a central controversy in the Garifuna community, the rumours spread that Paul Nabor obeahed (voodooed) Andy Palacio (the recently deceased worldwide face of garifuna music and culture). The song speaks to these rumours, saying not to believe everything you here, and that we need to be together, honour the dead without fighting amongst ourselves. It wasnt until I heard Rec's verse that I understood a story Mr. Nabor had told me at his house in PG about the seriousness of the attacks that have been made on him through these rumours, and at the end, you hear a sample of Mr. Nabor speaking to the human condition. K, that was a mouthful... Enjoy da beat. :)

This is the second track I did with C Wills (Clayton) in Hopkins.  He's a crazy drummer (dj/singer/etc...) who's been picking up guitar way faster than seems real, and has been writing some pretty damn cool songs.  We recorded this in the second story of a ramshackle house suspended above the caribbean sea (where I was sleeping), and looking out the window, the song called back to mind a girl in cuba, somewhere out there over the horizon line...

Garifuna drums with west african guitar rhythms and an r&b feel.  

Way You Are by C Wills w/ Mike Pipes

I met Jess in Hopkins through Ted, who runs an organization dedicated to preserving, growing, and empowering his community and culture in the town.  Ted put me up for several weeks and encouraged me to work with local musicians (and haul bags of stinking orange peels to his backyard to make a compost pile while the kids in town looked at me like I was crazy....anyways...)  Jess is a veteran musician, spent a long time in the US playing with the Babylon Warriors, now takes it pretty easy in Hopkins and is out fishing most of the time.  Super nice guy.  He wrote this song the same night we recorded it.  Hope to get back to do more work with him (and learn to fish).
