Daniel W. Best first heard Louis Baker, a New Zealand-based soul singer, perform "Keep On" as the opening act for Fat Freddy's Drop at the Tempodrom in Berlin in 2024. He knew he wanted to create a remix package of the song. His label partner, Andre Lodemann, was also impressed when he heard the track, so he did a remix himself. DJ Philippa and Hollis P. Monroe also delivered amazing remixes. There is something for everyone here. Louis Baker is one of New Zealand’s most compelling voices in modern soul. Hailing from Newtown, Wellington, Baker crafts timeless songs with rich vocals, honest lyricism, and deep grooves rooted in soul, R&B, and jazz. His breakout came early—selected from 4,000 global applicants to attend the Red Bull Music Academy in New York—collaborating with legends like Just Blaze, Q-Tip, and Brian Eno.

Live, he’s equally at home in intimate clubs or grand concert halls—performing with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, touring across Europe, the UK, and Australasia, and appearing at international festivals including Sziget and Sonar. Deeply connected to his Māori roots (Ngāpuhi), Baker infuses his music with heritage, hope, and heart.

Ground breaking label Sonar Kollektiv are celebrating their 21st birthday with a massive compilation from their back catalogue. Including a bunch of exclusive unreleased treats, Sonar Kollektiv 21 Years’ consists of two volumes with a total of sixty tracks covering releases from the last two decades that showcase their wonderfully broad approach to A&R.

German DJ/Producer collective Jazzanova launched the label in 1997, in the atmosphere of creative freedom following the fall of the Berlin Wall. Sonar Kollektiv have always released a wide range of music, some of it targeted at dancefloors, some not: electronica, house, reggae, techno, folk, funk, calypso, dream pop, chillwave and jazz have all found a home at Sonar Kollektiv with quality and a passion for new music as the consistent common denominators.

Picking only 60 tracks from the nearly 400 releases of their back catalogue has been something of a challenge but familiar names like Isoul8, Mieke Miami, Jah Wobble, Recloose, Jonatan Bäckelie, Micatone, Radio Citizen, Pete Josef and of course Jazzanova are all represented with at least one track.

Highlights from Volume 1 include the unreleased Black 80s and Jazzanova track Walk With Me featuring Fetsum on vocals, a gorgeous, sparse sonic space where crisp house beats meet with simple piano chords to create a sophisticated restrained musical bed for Fets u m s vocal to luxuriate in. Also unreleased is Lucifour M Afro Dog an irresistible slice of Afro esque vocal funk. This first volume additionally includes the classy pristine house of Isoul8 ’s If Speak
Your Word Instrumental and 1998’s epic Forecas t’ by Pathless, a journey from an innocent twinkling Rhodes intro through to a firing jazz work out, complete with sophisticated strings, jazz vocals and swinging horn riffs, spiced with synth flourishes

In keeping with their distinctive idiosyncratic style, Sonar Kollektiv aren t celebrating a 20th birthday, they re celebrating their 21st. T he label s 20th anniversary was in 2016, but due to a packed release schedule it had to be postponed till now. This late arrival is a result of
prioritising their artists careers and music over their brand. And of course, in prioritising music over brand, Sonar Kollektiv have unintentionally created one of the strongest brands in contemporary electronic music. ‘Sonar Kollektiv 21 Years’ is a celebration of commitment to quality; this is music made with passion, from music lovers, for music lovers.
