Imagine meeting someone at some dark underground function in the Midwest region of the US, somewhere around the turn of the century, and then getting to know them over a 22-ish year period.

Then imagine them making music that you respect in the highest regard, which eventually evolves into the most incredible, unique music you’ve ever heard in your life. And from there … the music keeps getting better and WAY crazier.

And it starts coming at you more and more rapidly as this artist starts sinking deeper and deeper into the psychedelic nature of the music they’ve created. A sort of beast that consumes the personal being, while leaving only the artist.

Then come the releases, and the beast, now more resembling a virus, starts to spread to those who didn’t know this artist personally. At this point, you’re starting to get excited for them! Overjoyed that others out there are finding this artist’s music and diving into
everything that YOU also loved about it. You feel immensely proud and excited for what’s coming up for them, while feeling lucky to be around to witness this impending phenomenon.

And then … just like that … it’s over.

This is the art of my friend Andrew Smith-Rasmussen. Or, that’s how he was known here on earth.

Andrew channeled his artistry through an interstellar being known as Jasen Loveland. Some kind of cosmonaut of psychedelia sent down to Earth from a galaxy unknown to scientists, astronomers and other celestial scholars out there.

And from that alter ego spawned dozens of aliases, each representing a different style or sound that was wrestling around inside his mind. One of which is captured, bottled and presented here on this 50th release from The Bunker New York.

This is the sound of The Lone Flanger.

Right from the start, you feel like you’re being pulled into his world by a drumless intro that best lays out what kind of a ride you’re about to jump into.

From there, it’s a trip through the cosmos while riding on Haley’s Comet. It’s dangerous, heart-pounding, hair raising, mind-blowing and crazy-making.

Much of it is breakbeat driven madness, tailor made for your brain, your body and your own personal being.

It’s the sound of Chicago, or Detroit, or any number of places in the Midwest region of the United States. But, not of our current era. It’s been brought to us from someplace on our timeline, but from the FAR distant future.

Jasen went all the way out there to bring it back for us. We may never see the era it came from, but at least we can hear it.

The Lone Flanger "Re" (The Bunker New York BK-050)

Blacklauren - the techno nom de guerre of Brooklyn’s Lesly Remy Jr. - works far beyond the reach of polite musical resolution. Enormous and pounding, these five tracks revel in what classically-minded listeners would consider dissonance - close intervals and flat fifths are expressed repetitively and hypnotically by whirling, searing synthesizers over undeniably kinetic drum programming. Harmonic ratios that less daring composers or improvisers would only ever use in the approach to resolution - or indeed would historically be considered demonic by early churches - are instead here the entire basis of these works. You are not permitted the safety of a return to a tonic chord, you are not permitted the boneheaded anticipation of a drop on the one, you are instead invited to savor the discomfort, everything progressing at a mechanical, unyielding techno sprint.

The result is a fascinating, disorienting space that ultimately works towards liberating the body. In the throbbing, unfamiliar harmonic churn of these body-rattling tracks something sublime bubbles up. Call it psychedelic, call it mesmerizing, call it mental, call it what you wish - but out amid the chug of the kick, as the unresolved melodies and clusters flutter unflinchingly, this freedom from resolution kicks you out of the airplane: it’s thrilling, it’s terrifying, it’s coming at you fast.

His work on these tracks can be described as devotional - with monastic dedication he makes certain to fire up Ableton and make some kind of sound every single day, hitting the YouTube tutorial dojo often or calling on fellow masters of dissonance Wata Igarashi or Linear System for expert guidance. He has also been a devotional fan of The Bunker New York, regularly attending our parties since 2010, appearing on several lineups and a pair of podcasts since then. Within the infinite universe of the DAW, he’s locked down a very particular set of instruments and presets, making great use of Reaktor’s realistic emulations of classic synthesizers. So his sonic signature is consistent, recognizable from track to track and also lovingly connected to the legacy of techno, plus the recordings are electric and alive. That’s the beautiful thing about going back to the same well again and again - you drink deeper with each dip.

Remy is also the founder of Nyabinghi Electronic Music, a fascinating label that arcwelds together the primal - like the pounding rhythms of Haitian Vodou, familiar to Blacklauren’s ears from his origins in Port-au-Prince - and the future - the various sonic technologies of the last fifty years, deployed precisely. Electrified into artistic ownership by the available time and inspiring swell of summer 2020’s Black Lives Matter actions, Remy makes explicit the label’s efforts to excavate the ceremonial aspects of techno and the futuristic summonings of African diasporic religious and cultural practices. In line with other tremendous futurists like the music and writings of DeForrest Brown, Jr. or the graffiti-as-starship designs of RAMM:ΣLL:ZΣΣ, Blacklauren’s work with the label and on this release sounds like sirens that are ever-approaching, doppler bending as they continually arrive - we’re here in the emergency but still we jubilate.

Through years of careful curation, renowned events, records, and podcasts, The Bunker has evolved into a community founded on connection through otherworldly music. 

With the launch of the sublabel Going In in 2020, Kasenic decided to promote the realms of long-form music compositions suited for more meditative moments. With 14 releases to date, he has transformed his devotion to alternative musical forms into reality. His Unrush contribution is a palpable display of this passion, turning his prowess as an experienced selector into a ruminative passage of sound that transcends time and space. So tune in, drop out, and let your thoughts dissolve into the ether.

For a good while, I did not think No Way Back would be a streaming event for the second year in a row, but as it became clear that was what was happening, I had to start thinking about this set. This was the opening set of the 36 hour stream, which gave me a lot of space to build things up incredibly slowly. There were a few things I knew I really wanted to include like the DJ Plead, Plastikman off "Consumed", the two Kocmoc tracks, and "Untitled #35" in tribute to Jasen Loveland. The rest was just connecting those dots to make it all work. I recorded this in one take by the stream outside my house in the Hudson Valley. I thought I would have shade for the whole 3 hours but found myself in direct sun halfway through as I started recording later than planned. The sun was sort of melting my brain and made the CDJ displays really hard to see but somehow I think it just added to the vibe. Deeply looking forward to finally reconnecting with everyone in 3D space at Tangent this Memorial Day weekend.

The Bunker Podcast 80: Tin Man

Voices From The Lake are Donato Dozzy and Neel, a duo that has redefined techno in both the live arena and the album format. Their debut full-length album for Prologue was widely heralded as a masterpiece for the way it displayed an incredible ear for sound design while painting vivid, multi-layered landscapes of slowly unfolding rhythm and texture. When playing live in serene environments like Japan's Labyrinth Festival, the pair explore experimental underwater sounds, African drumming, and minimalism while keeping the dancefloor in motion. 
 
In July of 2012, Voices From The Lake came from Rome to Brooklyn to present a special night of music at The Bunker in the back room of Public Assembly.  This was one of the greatest nights of music in the history of The Bunker.  Their tremendous six-hour set consisted of two separate live sets, and back-to-back DJ sets.  None of the music from the either of the hour-long live sets had been released, so we immediately got on them about their plans for the tracks.  We agreed on our favorite segments, and they produced live studio tracks based on those excerpts.  A few Voices From The Lake tracks have come out since the album, but this is their first full release since 2012.

This set was recorded live at The Bunker at Public Assembly on August 3, 2012.  Pittsburgh Track Authority drove from Pittsburgh in a car packed to the brim with gear and filled up the entire stage with all live hardware their set-up.  Their live sets are quite rare in general, and this was their first and (so far) only live gig outside the city of Pittsburgh.  As you can hear, they absolutely murdered the place.  They've since put out a bunch more records and will be self-releasing their debut album this year.

On May 27, @mikeservito x @jeffreysfire scheduled from 1am until 3am. Mike Servito always majestically closes out No Way Back, but what would this combination bring? Sfire brought the heat, and their styles melded in a slightly pitched down form, music from all eras appeared. To me, it was a form of sonic bliss. I went and asked the Danny from Bing (who does the sound and built the speakers for the Garden Stage) if he minded if we went later, he was all for it. So were Servito and Sfire, and it just kept getting better and better. The crowd was totally locked in, the feeling was ecstatic, it was truly a beautiful moment. This edition of The Bunker Podcast comes in the form of a peak time live set from @doltzdeep, a label artist on DJ Nobu's Bitta imprint who will be performing live at The Bunker x Bitta party in Brooklyn on Friday November 29.

When we asked @djnobu_bitta who else he wanted to bring from the label for this showcase, he immediately suggested Doltz. Doltz started his musical career in 1998 as a drummer in a hardcore punk band, and had a fateful encounter with DJ Nobu, who shares the same musical roots, when they were billed alongside each other at a party in 2022. Impressed by Doltz's live performance, DJ Nobu immediately booked him for his residency party 'reprise' at Womb Tokyo. The two hit it off and began exchanging tracks, with DJ Nobu actively playing out Doltz's tracks while touring across the world and receiving a good response. Doltz's live set at The Bunker will be his US debut!

The first time we'd ever heard of Carlos Souffront was in 2006, when Derek Plaslaiko was encouraging us to book him for our first 3/03 acid party (alongside Mark Verbos).  Derek would not shut up about a party in Detroit where Carlos just played Aphex Twin (and his many aliases) vinyl all night long and demolished the place.  So it only followed that we should invite him to play an all acid set on 3/03.  Carlos of course was phenomenal that night and has been a regular guest at The Bunker ever since.  Earlier this year, when Aphex Twin began uploading a seemingly endless stream of unreleased tracks to Soundcloud, it was Derek once again who called us and said: you HAVE to ask Carlos do a mix of this stuff for The Bunker Podcast.  Carlos obliged and did this mix for us live in one take (after a surprise practice session on RBMA radio).  Enjoy!

Recorded in The Panther Room at The Bunker and Wrecked's Gay Pride party on June 27, 2015.  The room was opened by Mike Servito and closed by Aaron Clark Price of Honcho.  Mike Servito had this to say about The Black Madonna's set: "I must say I have not seem someone command a room quite like that in some time. people losing their fucking minds! she served and beat us silly! she is inspiring us awwwwl!".  to which she responded: " I have to say I think it was basically my favorite time I ever DJed and so much of it had to do with how great Mike Servito was and the state the room was in when he did his thing. It was just perfect."  Yeah, it was basically one big love fest in the booth and on the floor.   As TBM says: You're damn right we still believe!!!

The Bunker Podcast 235 comes from @erikluebs. This is a live set recorded in Milan on March 28 at the party Acquario.

Erik Luebs is a US-born musician and sound designer based in Japan. Eschewing typical genre tropes, Luebs approaches techno with a playfully disruptive technique, reinterpreting the fundamentals using built-from-scratch patches and labyrinthine sequencing. While the labor-intensive process is inspired by a wide range of luminaries such as Mark Fell and Rrose, the resulting music is firmly tied to the dance floor.

Luebs released an EP on The Bunker back in 2021, and has since released on DJ Nobu’s Bitta label (@djnobu_bitta), and @nousklaeraudio. He also has an upcoming release on the legendary @kompakt imprint.

Erik will be playing an ambisonic surround sound set for a horizontal audience at Going In at Reforestor’s Laboratory in Brooklyn this Friday, and an extended sunrise dancefloor set at The Bunker’s takeover of @nowadaysnyc Nonstop on Sunday morning.

DJ Nobu has long been Japan's best kept secret, but lately it feels like the cat is well out of the bag as his global touring schedule fills up for 2016. Nobu has been producing the legendary Future Terror parties in Japan since 2001 and launched his Bitta label in 2012. More than anything though, he is known for his completely unpredictable yet always mind-melting DJ sets. We were totally floored by both his prime-time set at The Bunker in Tokyo and his opening set at The Bunker in Osaka in September, 2015. He will be playing the closing set of The Bunker NY takeover of Berghain in February, making his North American debut at The Bunker in Brooklyn in March, in addition to playing alongside The Bunker resident Eric Cloutier at Smart Bar in Chicago. Few DJs demonstrate the depth of vision that seems to come naturally to Nobu.

The sharply defined lines of Brutalist architecture, the infinite starry expanse of the cosmos, the industrial automation of the factory floor, the endless virtual worlds that make up the alternate universe of cyberspace: what do each of these things have in common with the new EP from Wata Igarashi on The Bunker New York? All are essentially a distillation of the grand, overarching spirit of modernity embodied by techno music.

Wata Igarashi is a lifelong musician and professional sound designer by trade. His decades of experience composing music for TV, web, live events, and beyond taught him the ins and outs of electronic music production — the mood of his machines — and led him to develop mind-bending techno timbres that recall the similarly hypnotic artistry of Rrose or Donato Dozzy, alongside a certain ineffable quality that makes his work uniquely his own. “Japanese people like to refine things,” suggests Igarashi. “There’s definitely some kind of particular ‘Japanese thing’ in electronic music — some Japanese producers are so detailed, carefully looking after the smallest elements,” he adds. Certainly, Igarashi himself falls in that cohort.

The last several years have been fruitful for Igarashi, with hotly tipped records on Peter Van Hoesen's Time to Express record label, the Berlin-based Midgar, and Spanish minimal techno specialists Semantica. A chance meeting at Berghain in February 2015 led Igarashi to connect with Bryan Kasenic, the man behind The Bunker New York, who already knew and loved his music. The pair developed a fast friendship based on mutual respect, and Kasenic was honored to welcome Igarashi to The Bunker New York family.

For his debut on The Bunker New York, Igarashi presents Mood of the Machines, a pristine techno record so perfectly composed, so tightly woven, that it simply speaks for itself. Like many of us, Brooklyn-based producer Gunnar Haslam has long been drawn to acid. Following two releases on The Bunker New York alongside Tin Man as a part of their improvisational Romans project, Gunnar returns with “Scale No Flam”, his first 12” single for the label. Scale No Flam is both a love letter and a demonstration of why he can’t stop getting lost in the sound. According to Gunnar, “acid is just one of those things that creeps into your life and consumes everything around you - a psychedelic and textural approach to music that is simultaneously intense and smooth.” While acid has come to be defined by the Roland 808 and the 303, the hardware alone can’t define the feeling, and Gunnar believes “You don't need a 303 to make acid, you just need an open ear and an open mind.” 

After getting Mike Servito, Justin Cudmore, Derek Plaslaiko, and Bryan Kasenic all running to the booth to see what the fuck was playing at various times when Gunnar was dropping the unreleased “Scale No Flam” in his DJ sets throughout 2016, we had no choice but to press it to vinyl. Gunnar tells us he was playing around with trying to replicate the bass line of Heaven 17’s 1982 classic ‘Let Me Go’ when “things kinda mutated.” The A side is completely Gunnar’s own with a dominating acid line providing the backbone to a flangey work-out that is simultaneously totally crazy and totally logical. On the B side, fellow Brooklynites and co-members of the Hot Mix DJ crew, Mike Servito and Justin Cudmore add their perspective with a remix that draws out the hidden angular funk.

Bryan Kasenic is an American dj, promoter and the founder of well-known The Bunker New York label. The Bunker New York began as a party, grew up into a record label, and has become a collaborative community, fostered by founder and curator Bryan Kasenic since it’s launch in 2003. The label unites diverse sounds from across the electronic music spectrum, connecting the dots between house, techno, experimental sounds, and much more. 

Bryan Kasenic delivers 60 minutes of murky and dynamic mix with a lots of twists and turns. In this hour-long set, recorded especially for Bassiani, he traipses through energetic techno, electro, breakbeat and leftfield aesthetic. Without high tempos and tensions throughout the mix, Kasenic perfectly creates dynamicity and intensity, that makes his sonic adventure very special and unique.

Known as @kangding-ray, he has been producing for almost a decade, releasing his music exclusively on Raster-Noton and Stroboscopic Artefacts. The aesthetic domains of these two labels epitomizes Kangding Ray’s complex sound—it’s an aesthetic that tests boundaries, evolving tirelessly in its exploration of texture, rhythm, and sound design. Letellier’s foundations in rock and musique concrete give his music a vitality and uniqueness that has won fans the world over, from discerning avant-garde–electronica listeners, all the way to devoted clubbers.

This set is a partial recording of a DJ set KR made last year in a club. @Marco_shuttle first caught our ear many years ago when we discovered his music the old fashioned way, picking up his Clone Store Only Series record at Halcyon in Brooklyn. This mysterious record led to becoming obsessed with his incredible, self-released podcasts that were floating around online at the time so we reached out to him and ended up working together to put his Fanfara EP out on our label in 2014, when he was almost unknown in North America. Since then, his music career has grown in leaps and bounds. He’s no longer at his day job in the fashion industry but tours and produces full-time, releasing albums on his own Eerie Records, Donato Dozzy and Neel’s Spazio Disponibile, as well as a string of killer EPs on several respected imprints. His productions and DJ skills have led to repeat bookings at Labyrinth Festival, Berghain, Concrete, Fabric, De School and just about everywhere else around the world where discerning heads congregate to hear great techno. 

When Marco was in Brooklyn to play an 8 hour set at The Bunker Limited earlier this year he played some new demos that stuck out as something exceptional, even by his very high standards, and we knew we had his next record on The Bunker New York ready to go. We’re psyched to present these intricate and detailed jams for your enjoyment in foggy dance floor corners. These tracks all have that unmistakable Marco Shuttle vibe with plenty of deliberate, slightly twisting melodies, shadowy disembodied echoing vocals courtesy of @gabriellavergilov that let your brain fill in the meaning, underpinned with punches of tautly layered rhythms.

”The last few months I spent a lot of time in the studio with Samuel, known from his VC-118A and Mohlao monikers. In the last year we have been flying to each other cities a couple of times, having long and intense studio sessions and now we are in the final stage of finishing an album. We're also planning to take this music live for the next year(s), so loads of work are taking place. The last few months I have been doing a lot of research on the production side of things and somewhat re-educated myself and now all the gathered knowledge comes out. It's a great feeling to see a lot of pieces of the puzzle come together, so all I can say is that I can't wait to release this project and share it with the world! Nothing of that in this mix though, this mix focuses on dancefloor music I enjoy to play out nowadays."

@anthony-rother is a stone cold electronic music legend. He’s put out 20 albums since his debut in 1997, and run the Psi49net and Datapunk imprints, which have more or less defined the electro genre. Lately, he’s been back with a vengeance, releasing the “3L3C7RO COMMANDO” LP on his own label, as well as EPs for DVS1’s Mistress Recordings and of course Danny Daze’s Omnidisc. His DJ sets these days are comprised of his own unreleased music specifically tailored for dancefloors. Rother is a dream booking for The Bunker who we still kind of can’t believe is coming to play our collaborative party with Omnidisc on November 1 (more details at http://bit.ly/omnibunker ).

"I have been tasked many times with opening No Way Back. It's quite fun to play with the energy in the room as it goes from empty and chill to full and heaving over the course of my set. This year was obviously very different with NWB being a stream where my set started at noon instead of 11pm. I had been quarantining upstate for months with my friend Otis Mass (Massive Original), and we decided to pair his visuals to my set to do something special with the format. Without any real pressure to get a dancefloor moving, I decided to start things off very slowly and build things up for Mike Servito's set. It is always an honor to be a part of No Way Back, and this year was no different.
