After a string of releases through Soma, we are pleased to present the debut album from Italian based DJ/producer Roberto Clementi. 

Roberto first came to Soma’s attention through a series of very slick demos and it was clear form the outset that this was a producer who not only had a grasp of a modern underground techno movement but one who also appreciated the finer things that can be found in electronic music. Since then, 4 highly acclaimed singles have been cultivated through Soma and brought Clementi to the forefront of the new stream of artists currently residing on the Glasgow label.

Hailing from a remote, beautiful area of Southern Italy, Roberto’s background and culture has shaped him as a producer, elements which he uses to fill his music with depth and emotion. He recounts back to his younger days when his father was the first person in their village that owned a satellite dish. This allowed the eager Clementi access to the wealth of music outwith his native Italy, finding himself recording music to VHS for later consumption. In fact, a technique he still employs when creating his own music today. For Roberto, every track has a background, a story and through his use of organic grooves and well-defined melodies he allows each individual listener to experience their own interpretation of his music. 

N Lights is definitely one of those albums produced with a personal touch. While it has its dancefloor moments, Roberto has taken the time to express himself as an artist. With the opening pads of Your Turn Roberto sets the tone of the album; deep, grooving and brought to life with electronic feeling. He keeps a steady hand as tracks like Lei, Subavia & Receed keep the opening dubby vibes of the album in tow whist still retaining a dance floor appeal. The slo-mo electronics of Obscuria swell perfectly in the middle of this album, its sluggish subs and tweeking synths break the mould so far. Normal service resumes quickly as When Loves Clashes (already a previous hit on Soma) & Untime come hurtling in. The latter, probably one of Roberto’s most grooving tracks, pulses with dubbed out synths and chugging drums making for perfect peak time action. It’s at this point Robert brings us slowly out of his universe. The eerie and resonating Viscreal, while ominous, alludes to that light at the end of every tunnel as percussive keys flash through the cavernous low end. The stepping Agile glistens with perfectly chopped and arranged vocal cuts that lend themselves intuitively to the beat. Jazzy keys with spring like synths brighten this track from the core eventually drifting into the ether. At the end of his journey, Robert closes with the incandescent At The Fruit. Stuttering beats and otherworldly bass are flanked by beautifully improvised keys tripped out with space like FX, tying the album together under his full spectrum of production techniques.

Roberto has crafted a very unique and self-exploratory body of work with N Lights, one that has come together with faultless ease. Since his first release on Soma he has grown into a fully-fledged eclectic artist and one who is not scared to put himself out there with his work.

South London Ordnance marks his sophomore Hotflush release with an extended four-track EP that confidently flaunts his flair for brooding atmosphere.

Dark, punchy basslines informed by a distinctly UK heritage are his signature and they bind these wee-hour refrains with brassy continuity. From the futurist synthesis of lead-track “Contact” through the jungle influences pervading “Sabre” and “Ritual to Romance” to the whistle-wielding “Output”, SLO’s stamp is as compelling as it is surefooted.

This release, together with last year’s acclaimed launch of his own label, Aery Metals, a remix for Optimo, his first North American tour, show the young UK producer maturing beyond his years.

FORMA’s combustible mixture of lush synth explorations and frenetic rhythm has captivated the margins of the international synth scene since their acclaimed 2011 debut on John Elliott’s Spectrum Spools label. Following 2012’s dark and penetrating OFF/ON, the trio set a direct course toward the shadowy perimeter of the dance floor, with John Also Bennett replacing original member Sophie Lam. FORMA’s celebrated live performances -- extended improvisational journeys veering from the ecstatic to the foreboding -- draw techno, noise, and synth disciples into their realm.

We first heard Forma at a live show at their headquarters--Bushwick's monumental live-work space and performance venue The Schoolhouse. After one of their shows this winter, members of the group revealed that they had been working on music that didn’t really fit into an album format, but would work as a 12” aimed more at dancefloor audiences--and that’s what you have here: two epic 15 minute tracks of blissed out kosmische techno.

B - Cloud Pillar (CLIP)

Priori (@priori-ties) has always explored a wide range of techno from dense and introspective to more joyous, often against the backdrop of technological possibilities. He hails from Canada and has been prolific since first emerging with two full-lengths to his name on his own NAFF label. They pair dubby undercurrents with crystalline melodies and contain the sort of unresolved tensions that keep you locked in for the ride. This weekend he plays Dekmantel Naarm 2024 but first has served up this new mi for us.

Priori says this is the first dance mix he's done in a long time, adding "It's an hour and a half of fresh rhythms and rave sounds that I recorded while on tour in Australia. It features a few tracks I have been playing a lot lately and some forthcoming bits by myself and some friends." In just over 90 minutes he works through a rollercoaster of deep techno rhythms that are firmly focused on the future and flow as fluidly as water.

In late 2023 I was chatting with a musician friend about labels, and whether they're really all that necessary these days. As someone mainly focused on self-releasing my music through Bandcamp, I think for the most part the answer is no. One should focus on passionately creating things and being involved in their local music community. Over time, label or not, things will hopefully start to take care of themselves on their own. I did however mention that there was one label I thought was really cool, and would definitely be interested in working with: it was Nous'klaer Audio. Incredibly, the next day I received an email from Sjoerd Oberman, who runs Nous'klaer, inviting me to join for a release and performance at Draaimolen. Of course, I was delighted to be involved. This would be my first show in the EU. I spent about 3 months preparing a new set. Having grown rather bored of CDJs and DJ mixers, I opted to prepare a live set, in which I control 8 channels of audio tracks along with drum machines and FX. This setup gives me a lot of freedom to explore new arrangements of my catalog, and better command the dynamic energy on the dance floor, pushing and pulling things forwards to capture the mood of the crowd. To prepare for Draaimolen, I organized several shows across Japan (where I live), further refining the setup after each performance, and deciding what tracks would be the best fit for the 60 minute peak time set I was scheduled to perform. I was very nervous about how my set would be received, but it ended up working very well, and was the highlight of my year. From the very start, the positive reaction from the crowd put me at ease, and Draaimolen's focus on sound and stage design gave me peace of mind, knowing that every frequency was being perfectly reproduced on the floor. I'm so grateful for the opportunity Nous'klaer and Draaimolen provided me. Long live Nous'klaer and long live Draaimolen. Thank you Sjoerd and Milo and Kani and Hannah!

A lesson in rhythm from a former De School resident.

When it comes to minimalist dance music, Ruben Üvez, AKA Konduku, is one of the best in the game right now. With a masterful and ever-shapeshifting understanding of rhythm, the Berlin-based artist crafts sublime dance music with a staunchly leftfield bent. Don't just take our word for it: how many DJs, after all, can claim to have moved De School to a puddle of tears?

Musically, Üvez is hard to pin down. He's often billed as a techno artist, but actually you'll find his sound sits outside of the genre's many conventions. With an outsider's curiosity, he leans into diverse moods, tempos and genres, though one throughline is always how he arranges his drums. Whether it be deep, Nobu-core techno such as 2023's Hayal EP or UK beat science á la Peverelist on 2019's  Gegek, he leads with rhythm across his DJing and production. The end product is a hypnotic, one-of-a-kind sound that hits the body before the brain has time to catch up. In short, it slaps.

As Üvez's RA Podcast demonstrates, he's got a serious knack for crafting and selecting tunes that can  deeply captivate a dance floor. Clocking in at just over 90 minutes, RA.967 is an excursion through a timeless sound, packed with long, layered blends, flick-of-the-wrist transitions, locked grooves and spine-tingling atmospherics. In 2020, we called Ruben Üvez one of techno's brightest new talents. This mix sees him ascending to a seat at the top table.

andy has such a distinctive sound, it’s so easy to recognise one of his tracks in a mix as he bridges together his mexican and jamaican roots through a futuristic style that spans across techno and dub leaning towards rich textural influences. it’s honestly quite hard for me to go a mix or radio show without including one of his andy’s tracks. his output is strong with his first release out in 2009 and has been steady ever since! whether that’s self-released, via his imprint mole audio, that he runs alongside didier dlb and where you’ll find collaborations with lee scratch perry and gavsborg, via labels such as ssensorial and discos movimiento or his ambient works which have led to andy performing in musuems, art galleries and festivals like mutek. there’s a touch of andy martin in every corner.

Altering our consciousness for the first time in 2023 with a particularly awe inspiring set at Sustain-Release, Aaron's deeply considered and intricate approach is something of sheer beauty, and coupled with masterful technical ability, his inspiring DJ sets allow for fully immersive dancefloor experiences. 

Here Aaron explores the softer edges of his expansive sound palette, meditative soundscapes and tranquil IDM converging in total harmony for what he describes as a 'recalibration of the senses'.

Q. What sounds or feelings did you draw upon when gathering inspiration for this mix, and what listening environments could you imagine it being best enjoyed in?

A. Of all the mixes I’ve put together over the years, this one definitely feels the most vulnerable. The months I spent thinking about and working on this mix accompanied an intensely busy time in my life, and the process helped me stay in touch with the simple joy of listening as a way of stepping back and letting things go. There is a direct connection here between the music within and the emotions that live inside me. At the same time, I’ve tried my best to mix this as transparently as possible, so that the act of DJing takes a back seat and allows the music to take center stage.

The inspiration behind the tracks I chose and the story of the mix is one of finding balance, so I hope listening to it feels like a casting off of the present day and a recalibration of the senses. I’d love for people to listen to the mix in a setting where they feel most protected from the changes and stressors of the outside world, whether that be sitting outside in nature or laying on a couch surrounded by the comforts of home.

Q. Are there any songs in the mix that you were especially excited to share, and what is it about these tracks that resonate with you so much?

A. There is a track in the mix by Autumn of Communion called “Goodbye PK” dedicated to the late Peter Kuhlmann, who many of your listeners will know as the legendary Pete Namlook of FAX +49-69/450464. It’s an immensely moving track that manages to convey both the tragedy of his loss and the depth of the beauty he left with the world, and I feel we’re so fortunate to have music and influences like this in our recent history. I included it early to set the tone of the rest of the mix, which is quite different than any I’ve done before, and to pay my respects to those who’ve inspired our scene from the very beginning.

Q. I was lucky enough to witness your set at Sustain-Release in 2023 and was in awe of your ability to practice restraint while steadily building up tension and energy in the set with such clinical and seamless execution. Is this part of the DJ craft something you spend a lot of time planning and refining?

A. That was such a life-changing moment for me, so I’m really glad you were there! You really nailed what I hoped to accomplish with that set, and I definitely spend a lot of time thinking about where my sets will begin, where I would like them to end up, and what sort of path I might take to get there. Understanding the minutiae of how a transition will affect someone’s state of mind and how to propel someone forward without jarring them back to reality is something I’m always working to improve on. That said, the upward trajectory is not always the most interesting one, and there are so many other ways of charting a course through a set that I hope to be able to explore. For the mix I’ve made for you, it’s not so much a set that builds energy as it is one that expands and contracts, hopefully in a gentle and purposeful way.

Operating at the frontiers of electronic music, Spekki Webu stands apart as a true architect of his own sonic universe. The visionary behind the Mirror Zone label and a highly prolific producer, his work - including an excellent debut album last year - is a testament to a relentless pursuit of the new, sculpting a sound that is both boundary pushing and universally mind-altering.

Offering some insight into the deeply personal and experimental nature of this deep trip, the Dutch maestro explains:

“This mix is mainly music by myself, upcoming music on the label and some unreleased tunes by friends. I have been exploring lots of different tempo's the last few months and also been reprocessing a lot of field recordings which have been layered a lot in this mix. You can almost say that this is a hybrid mix where I am live layering field recordings and processing them in real time. But the main focus is of course the DJ part. Slowly unfolding and blending from chapter to chapter, I don't engage my mixes as mixes anymore, more like this feeling of reading a few pages from my personal book.

Minimalistic movements drowned in wider atmospheric arrangements within this story. A lot of this music in this mix has been made in the last months and dives into introspective moments. Blurring textures which have felt like clouded moments in my consciousness, like living in some sort of dream and moving on to the next stage. Preparing for changes. Waiting for new movements.”

This week. welcoming a dear friend and one of my all-time favourite DJs & producers, Swiss wizard @agonis-amenthia - part of the mystical Basel crew - @amenthia-recordings.

A "techno" sound so unique, modern & boundary pushing, it makes you question the genre entirely. Agonis has become known for his bass, techno, dub, idm-everything.. infused releases, always meticulous and full of surprises. On top of a an extremely reliable and exciting back-catalogue of music and always on-point curation of Amenthia alongside his label co-head Garcon, he is also an incredible DJ. Here for Animalia a special mix inspired by many special shared moments on the dancefloor <3  pure euphoria!

Next up in our mix series is Julie, hailing from Tilburg, Netherlands. Julie is a resident at the Amsterdam-based party Pax-Romana, and the iconic Draaimolen Festival in Tilburg. Since 2015, Julie has been shaping her own sound as a DJ, which can be described as deep, hypnotic, percussion-driven techno, getting standout performances at legendary venues and events like Bassiani, De School, Tresor and Draaimolen.

For this episode, Julie has shared a 3,5h live-recording from the renowned Garage Noord back in January, when Julie warmed up the floor for Sandwell District. Setting the mood for the night, slowly building tension, Julie showcases her unique storytelling skills. A deeply hypnotic voyage gradually unveiling layers of tension & textured frequencies, delivered with the perfect pacing and finesse of a truly skilled selector.
