Vinyl artifacts intact, set includes one record that was stepped on at the first NWB. Set begins with Carlos mixing in the AFX's "Elephant Song" over BMG playing the unreleased Shake Remix of Alpha 606.

Here we are with a recording from the first (but certainly not last) time Kiernan Laveaux graced the decks at Nowadays back in September of 2021. In it you’ll find so much of what we’ve come to love about the T4T LUV NRG affiliate: swarming percussion, freaky and frenetic psychedelia, otherworldly groove, a captivating sense of narrative, and so much more. 

This mix is a two and a half hour segment from her closing set, after DJ Voices and Azu Tiwaline earlier in the night. Packed to the brim with moments of tension and release, it makes for one truly wild and mesmerizing ride. The home listener is likely to find it just as enchanting as the dancers did.

BIO:
California-bred Robert Yang, also known as Bézier, is an American DJ and producer.

While best known for being one of the earliest members of the queer San Francisco musical collective Honey Soundsystem, Yang also produces under multiple aliases and heads three blooming labels, Bodyzone, m-i-v (short for mémoire involontaire), and Piece of Work. Bézier cut his teeth in the San Francisco scene for a decade, and now firmly planted in Berlin, where he continues to expand his sound and vision into a cohesive yet dynamic mosaic.

Bézier’s productions walk the line between soft and hard, emotive and gritty. From their early interest in braindance and IDM to their dance-forward proclivities, Bézier’s influences are wide-ranging, resulting in music that is as carefree as it is relentless. A master of synth work, Bézier employs a range of analog synthesizers to create highly textured tracks that recall a retro-futuristic soundscape. The atmosphere of these releases, often cinematic, bring to mind motorbikes zipping through alleyways or neon sunsets dripping with a kind of dystopian euphoria.

Q. How would you describe yourselves?

G: I’m the venue manager and a booker at Nowadays and grateful participant in independent New York dance music culture generally.
H: I guess I used to be a DJ?

Q. How long have you both been a part of the music scene in NY?

G: I came here from Dublin in 2011 but had to leave at the end of 2013 because of visa issues. After that I kept in close contact with friends here and I was lucky enough to be able to come back in early 2017 so it’s been just over 8 years now.
H: I moved here in 2007 very starry eyed, and the scene was much smaller then. When I starting throwing my own parties in 2010, it felt like everything was changing, which was exciting to be a part of. And actually that feeling hasn’t slowed down, even now.

Q. Tell us a little bit about this mix.

H: This was recorded in April during our peak-Quar isolation and existential questioning. We imagined a soundtrack for cyclists and the lone stoned headphone wanderers who were doing the same types of thinking. It was Gareth’s first time making a mix and it was fun to find music we had in common for it, which was mostly sub-100bpm and above 160. It goes all over the place genre-wise but stays in the same mood space.
G: Yeah Aurora taught me how to use the CDJs and I used some of the early quarantine free time to go back over music I had always wanted to spend more time with but never really got around to. Doing this was a fun way to reflect on the kind of sounds I’m interested in and find out where they overlap with Aurora’s. Very, very grateful to her for showing me the ropes and to Juanita for the chance to stitch a few of them together.

20 years ago Bryan Kasenic started The Bunker New York as an event series on New York's then-gritty Lower East Side. In 2014 he created a record label to provide an outlet for the work of friends, party-goers and visiting artists. Over the years, The Bunker NY has grown into an established institution which is well known for its steady output of high quality releases and its reputation as one of North America’s finest event series.
