At the vanguard of Melbourne's bustling underground music scene you’ll find Surprise Chef. A band very much on the rise, who with two exceptional albums under their belts, are picking up a rapidly swelling fanbase across the world. Working out of the College of Knowledge stable (their home / studio / record label namesake), the band’s take on instrumental cinematic soul and funk has connected with listeners across multiple scenes and genres. Their intoxicatingly laidback sound, which pairs expertly crafted hooks with a seriously funky, watertight rhythm section, has earned them a wide appeal and made their tracks ripe for interpretation.

When floating ideas for potential remixers, two names came to the fore, Masters At Work and Harvey Sutherland. MAW have a long history with Mr Bongo having remixed the Brit-funk classic ‘Dancing In Outer Space’ by Atmosfear for the label in 1997, and releasing the original track, ‘Brazilian Beat’ in 2000. With their studio collaboration now back in full swing, it was the perfect time to inject the MAW magic back into the label. They picked ‘Crayfish Caper’ from the band’s first album ‘All News Is Good News’ as their choice of track to remix. The ’Nuyorican Broken Remix' sees MAW stepping into their Nuyorican Soul guise. A Latin shuffle meets an afro-beat rhythm and some very chunky broken beats, which all underpins an infectious melody constructed around the original track’s bassline. They pair this with horns and synths that add a flourish and reveal new layers as the track develops. It’s a sound that is uniquely Nuyorican Soul and a welcome return for fans of this aspect of their phenomenal output. The 'Masters At Work Remix’ is straight up vintage MAW in House mode. It takes many of the same elements found in the 'Nuyorican Broken Remix' and points things in a House direction. It’s 4/4, but the beats have that Kenny Dope trademark swing. Tough, but oozing soul. Add to that heavy bass, vocal cuts, fierce horns and saxophone, layered synths, and that undeniable MAW bounce. 

Rounding off the package is the remix from Harvey Sutherland. Having made international waves since 2013 with his unique take on dance music, Harvey has long been on Mr Bongo’s remix radar, but until now we hadn’t managed to get that ambition over the line. This time around the stars aligned perfectly. Surprise Chef and Harvey Sutherland are both Melbourne residents and they had already been working on projects together. The band set things up and Harvey chose to remix ‘New Ferrari’ from their latest album, ‘Daylight Savings’. His take on the track sees things venturing into dubby-disco territory. A dreamy, cosmic, bass-heavy, sweeping synth-led workout, that retains yet reinterprets the catchy-as-hell hooks from the original track. A roller with serious muscle!

Encontrar is Rafael (DJ Raff)'s first full-length album in almost seven years. The last one was Movimiento, released in October 2017. It coincides with his seven years living with his family in London.

Encontrar speaks of concluding a long process. It is about the culmination of a constant search to understand himself and to know who he is creatively. The perspective gained from living in a place so different and far from where he grew up (Santiago, Chile) has helped him find his sound, connect especially with his surroundings, and create a unique language to develop and express his ideas.

The songs on Encontrar were created in his home studio in South London during the post-pandemic period, between 2022 and 2023. After several years of producing many singles, remixes, and EPs, which were shorter and more focused processes, he decided to embark on an album. This longer story closes one cycle and paves the way for another entirely different with a renewed perspective.

Populous is Andrea Mangia, a producer hailing from Lecce, a small city on the heel of Italy's boot. In 2003, he made his first jaunt into the music world with the album Quipo (via Morr Music). In 2005 he released Queue For Love, influenced by his reggae/hip-hop-infused surroundings (Lecce is known as Italy's Jamaica, as reggae and dancehall are extremely popular there) and in 2008 he released Drawn in Basic. Both albums were widely received by international critics, earning him a spot on the global music map. He became known for the way he seamlessly blends digital sounds with the analog warmth of soul/hip-hop/whatever else he's influenced by at the time.

Azulejos, his forthcoming release, has a South American tinge to it (and is even partly in Spanish). He moved to Lisbon, Portugal to start work on the album bringing with him only a laptop, a small MIDI keyboard, and a microphone. "Lisbon became both my studio and my muse," he says. He wandered the city collecting field recordings— from trams to people singing on street corners. He sifted through flea markets for records to use for sampling (exclusively Portuguese and South American). Populous describes Lisbon as a city 'halfway between South American soul and European modernity, African in some aspects, and dramatically melancholic." He channeled these poignant fusions into Azulejos, named for the typical tiled facades in Portugal— simultaneously bright and decaying. The album features collaborations with Nina Miranda of Smoke City and Ela Minus, among others. It's a love letter to Lisbon, and a dreamy quilt of sounds he both grew up with and heard for the first time during his influential stay in Portugal.

Coming in hot off his first single (“Out Here,” Wonderwheel Recordings, 9/11), Thornato is back with “La Niña Grande” with Paulina Sotomayor of the eponymous Mexican group. Thornato’s bouncy beat opens up with a four-on-the-floor kick and a chopped up vocal sample, before a sharp, syncopated snare welcomes the first verse. Delivered in her signature rap-sung style, Pau sings over synth stab chords reminiscent of 90s bass tunes, but with a Latin nod; in the chorus she sings “yo soy niña grande” (“I am a big girl”), an ironic statement of empowering defiance. Thor Partridge is the globally acclaimed producer known as Thornato, who’s perked ears over the years for his seamless fusion of wildly distant sounds and sensitive balance between the contemporary and the traditional. In 2013, he released a track called ‘Gaita Gaita’ via ZZK records, an infectious flute-woven banger (listen to believe it), which became an instant dancefloor hit and has, to this day, been sampled by thousands of producers. His debut album ‘Bennu’ was released in 2017 on Wonderwheel Recordings and received praises from the likes of NPR, Insomniac, Xlr8r, and more, catapulting him onto prestigious stages around the world, from Boiler Room in Mexico City to Fusion Festival in Germany. A self-proclaimed ‘sonic hoarder’, Thornato is obsessed with recording sounds, and does so in a way that’s genuine to their roots. Thornato’s upcoming album, “Escape Plan,” is out November 6th on Wonderwheel Recordings.
