Since its inception in 2013, Mawimbi founders have been expanding their knowledge of lesser known and rather undiscovered musical territories thanks to chance encounters with likeminded DJs/producers, who were kind enough to put them onto a good amount of under-the-radar tropical gems.

Launched in 2017 and named after Mawimbi's bi-monthly radio show on Rinse France, the "Radio Mawimbi" compilation series is dedicated to unearthing vintage tropical gems in the form of free download edits and remixes by some of the most seasoned diggers and promising rookies of the tropical-enthusiast community!

From deep, drum-heavy workouts to essential Guinea Bissau melancholy, through remixed Beninese afrofunk and vintage South African kwaito, this second installment features the editing and remixing works of Yeahman (Frente Bolivarista), LSD (Love Saves The Day), Déni Shain (ATANGANA Records), Umoja, Mawimbi, ATW (Around The World), Calisto, Turbo Boom-Boom (TBB) and Midnight Ravers.

Muitas incursões de bandas e cantores de tendências mais urbanas e universais já foram feitas pelos terreiros da música popular. Desde os anos 1990 até os dias de hoje temos dezenas de exemplos de artistas – geralmente nordestinos – que foram “beber” na fonte dos seus mestres. O contrário não é muito observado: mestres populares, de formas simples e encerradas na tradição, irem ou serem levados a explorar novas possibilidades.

O álbum novo de canções do mestre Ferrugem – tradicional coquista de embolada do bairro olindense do Amaro Branco – quebra paradigmas. O modelo do coco apresentado no seu primeiro CD solo, Mestre quando canta discípulo tem que respeitar (2007), é ampliado. 

Neste primeiro, Ferrugem já se rendia a instrumentos incomuns ao coco, como a flauta. Percebendo a abertura do mestre a novidades, o músico e produtor Sergio Cassiano (que nos anos 1990 começou com o Mestre Ambrósio a fazer música partindo das invenções mais roots dos mestres populares) dirigiu e produziu Ferrugem neste novo trabalho.

No segundo álbum, que recebe apenas sua assinatura, o que sentimos, da primeira a décima e última faixa, é que o artista construiu um marco na sua trajetória de compositor e intérprete, bem como na história do coco. Alguns pesquisadores que estudam o ritmo já entendem que a diversidade deste gênero (coco litorâneo, agrestino, sertanejo, de embolada, de improviso, de trupé etc.), permite, entre seus representantes, variações cada vez mais comuns no modo de executar.

Ferrugem rendeu-se à Cassiano. Ambos, mestres e discípulos. Cassiano, no entanto, impôs: queria ter a liberdade de indicar o caminho. Cassiano havia conhecido o poder de Ferrugem desde sua primeira gravação: uma coletânea produzida pela Sambada Comunicação e Cultura, mesma produtora que hoje cuida da carreira do coquista.

“Observei no escrever dele uma qualidade acima da média. Uma coisa muito destacada na qual fiquei intrigado e disse, ‘acredito que ele escreve outras coisas’. Eu venho observando certos artistas que podem fazer outras coisas, nesse universo que me encaixo mais. Fiquei vislumbrando isso”, conta Cassiano. Ele sugeriu ao mestre as novidades e Ferrugem aceitou, aberto ao novo como demonstrou desde seu primeiro disco. Vieram então as cordas de Juliano Holanda (baixo, viola, guitarra semiacústica) e de Rodrigo Samico (violão), que assina os arranjos ao lado de Cassiano. 

Estão lá também as percussões variadas e sempre bem colocadas do próprio Cassiano. Chegaram junto as colaborações especiais, como a de Nilsinho Amarante, que atacou com trombone em algumas faixas. Mazinho Lima (ex-companheiro de Cassiano no Mestre Ambrósio) auxiliou com suas linhas de baixo. O coro feminino, tradicional nas respostas do coco de embolada, virou um coro misto, com entradas diferenciadas.

Cassiano também apresentou Ferrugem a outros compositores pernambucanos. Ferrugem, acostumado sempre a dominar o pandeiro, o microfone, e seguir em frente com suas próprias músicas, aprendeu novas poéticas e divisões. Do próprio Cassiano, gravou Pela janela (feita exclusivamente para este trabalho); de Rosil Cavalcanti, Forró na gafieira; de Cláudio Rabeca canta Sábio Pescador. Viés de uma Paixão é de Geraldo Maia e Vão, de Juliano Holanda e Publius.

O disco que poderia ser apenas de coco, com muitas percussões, virou um disco de cocos, mas também de sambas, canções, xotes e ritmos variados, com sofisticação e harmonia. “Eu gosto de mexer aí, nos trechos de percussão, na entrada do coro. Gosto de seguir por caminhos que tragam elementos de audição que sejam ricos”, completa Cassiano.

Rica está a música de Ferrugem. Com cheiro de praia, de gafieira no morro, com trajes elegantes em dia de festa.

With their last original release coming in 2016, It may feel like The Busy Twist have shied away from the limelight in recent years but during this time they’ve been travelling and working hard on some of their most ambitious music yet, and in the process have set up their own label Busy Life Records. 

Busy Life is a project focused on joining the dots between West African, South American, Caribbean and UK electronic music by developing a sound which not only melds the sonic genealogy of all four palettes but also presents such crossovers faithfully. Developing an exchange with local artists that works in both directions is key to the label, and crucial to creating borderless music that can be shared with their family worldwide. 

The opening EP on the label ‘Sunny Side’ is a record years in the making and highlights the ever-decreasing gap between UK and modern African music. It is therefore fitting that many of the ideas heard on ‘Sunny Side’ were born during their very first trip to Ghana, and have been continually refined as Afro and UK sounds intertwine year on year. 

The EP is led by strong vocal performances from lead singer Zongo Abongo. An artist from Northern Ghana who has been part of the Busy Life family since its inception. It also features additional vocals from Kyekyeku and Siaka Djarra from Burkina Fasso.
