The Cactus Channel’s new single “Leech” takes the orchestrated soul futurism that has become their signature sound and adds silvery vocal dimensions, as the band’s own Lewis Coleman steps up to the mic. The song’s emotionally potent lyrics evoke the wrestling that arises internally with the feelings that linger after a breakup. As Lewis elucidates, “Leech” is about “those feelings that don’t go away, and pop up at unexpected times. When something shifts inside, but even your best friends wouldn’t know; your mood is instantly altered, even if you can walk back into the room and nobody notices it externally.” The band has recently shared the video for their first single “Storefront” and announced a huge national tour and an October residency at Melbourne’s The Night Cat.

Three is the magic number for The Cactus Channel. The ever-evolving Melbourne collective’s third album represents a new consciousness and a decisive turning point. Unloosed from their earlier incarnation as an instrumental soul and funk band into something wilder, a little darker and heavier, the new album sees The Cactus Channel diving in deep to dreamlike soundtracks, electrifying wig-outs and woozy meditations.

There were signifiers along the road; a boundary-splintering EP with  Ball Park Music  singer Sam Cromack last year, following a 7” single collab with Nick Murphy, released as  The Cactus Channel feat. Chet Faker . These outings were a glimpse of the alchemy of adding vocals to the band’s typically intuitive, instrumental arrangements. And now with the band’s own Lewis Coleman stepping up to the mic, a vocal dimension has become part of The Cactus Channel’s fully formed, signature sound.

This new embodiment of The Cactus Channel is of the cultural moment, akin to the vibrational path-crossing of fellow travellers such as Badbadnotgood, Unknown Mortal Orchestra & Menahan Street Band. The band flexes their classic soul and funk influences whilst expanding their own songwriting along psychedelic paths, adding weight and substance to their melodic and rhythmic axis.

Looking back to when The Cactus Channel formed in high school, united by shared interests and a shared sense of humour, they were always set to walk this new path. A love of soul music and the kind of hip hop, jazz, and alternative releases that spring from it, meant that from the beginning The Cactus Channel have prided themselves not just on eclecticism, but on the constant sharing of influences among their members; exploring new influences and sonic territories.

Darvid Thor unveils new single “Anything”, the fourth cut from his debut mini-album I’m Never Really Here, out March 1. Driven by eerie synths, dark fuzzy bass and filtered drums that float with an uneasy intensity, Darvid’s lyrics muse on perspective and letting go.

Thor says of the track, “I wanted to consider positives and lessons learnt from a particular experience, instead of dwelling on how it was bringing me down. That was the best way to move forward”.

Recorded and performed alone by Darvid, “Anything” is the latest cut from his debut mini-album I’m Never Really Here, out March 1. At times anxious and quietly anguished, tender and candid, these are songs about a growing-up, a breakup, and everything in between. “Do It Again” & “Rest of Your Life” reveal a more straight-ahead dream-pop style, with “Get Out” showing a darker inner monologue;

A sweet melancholy of jangly guitars and warbled synthesizers that have afforded support from Beach Fossils, Danger Mouse, Double J, Triple J Unearthed and Indie Shuffle to name a few. You might also recognise him from alt-soul group The Cactus Channel. Live, Darvid expands his setup to a four-piece band including Lewis Coleman, Levi Heeringa & Hugh Rabinovici.
