12. Quills & Characters Exhibition

Chawton House celebrated its 20th anniversary of preserving and promoting early women's writing, from 13th to 16th July 2023. 

Lizzie Frisby talks to Curator & Collections Manager Emma Yandle about the arrival of a special acquisition that coincided with the anniversary. 

Then, Dr Clio O'Sullivan chats to a whole range of speakers and guests who joined for the celebrations: best-selling author and headline speaker - Gill Hornby, former Post-doctoral Fellow in Women's Writing (1680-1830)- Professor Jennie Batchelor, Chawton House Post-doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Southampton - Dr Gillian Dow and former visiting fellow Dr Alison Daniell.

14. What's in store for 2024?

Find out all about the Evening Orchard Wassail at Chawton House with Lizzie Frisby. It's a centuries’ old Twelfth Night apple-growing celebration, involving hearty singing in the orchard to encourage a bountiful harvest in 2024, led by the Wassail Queen. 

Lizzie narrates and explains the evening and chats to the Wassail Queen (Dr Clio O'Sullivan). Plus, you can hear inserts from the Kings Pond Shantymen who provided some lively traditional songs at the occasion.
