A Thursday night in Wellington, NZ, circa 2001 Derrick Carter touched down for the Boompty Boomp tour and tore the fucking roof off Studionine from 3am until nearly 9:30am!!!

A friend of mine moved to Auckland a few years later and randomly met the guys who managed the tour and he told them how much I raved about the gig, they gave him a 4 CD set to give to me!!!

20 years on, I've decide it's time for this to be available online!

back to basics 30 - just when I thought I was out...

Last month on the 13th of October, we invited house music hero & all round good guy Derrick Carter to bring his 'Derrick Does Disco' party to the Sub Club helping to celebrate GLASGAY! 20th Anniversary.

The source of many a man-crush (particularly from our local DJ geeks and record freaks) our sexy affair with Derrick has spanned a good couple of decades. Perhaps it’s his desirable physique, that intense beaded brow around 2am or his disarmingly charming manliness from the moment we met him off the plane.

Either way we’re always hot for him and so was everyone in the crowd who joined us as we got down and dirty in a darkened room and showed each other some serious loving, with no strings attached till 3am.

With Derrick in control for the full four hours we had to get the roadblocks out. Here is an hour of this amazing set specially picked out by the one man block party himself.

About the cd:
A superb surprise episode for 041 in the series. Massive thanks to Nick Sneddon for sending over some epic CDs recently. We are really happy to feature more downtempo CDs... it feels like the recovery soundtrack to countless nights clubbing and those sun kissed days that followed (well maybe not so much if you grew up in the UK).

Considering this came out in 1996, it features some simply gorgeous deep house and laid back electronic which go onto cement why DJ Harvey is a cult dj amongst fans and fellow spinners. It's a pleasure not just remember my own collection, but have other people send in theirs. And it's even better discovering that there's hundreds of other classics out there which need to be shared with everyone. Thanks again for the good vibes.

Nu-Mark began DJing at the age of 13 in Los Angeles. Over the last two decades, he has amassed an immense collection of rare records from around the world.  Nu-Mark’s refined music production and live showmanship regard him as one of the most innovative DJ’s in music culture.
 
As a member of the critically acclaimed, gold-selling Hip-Hop outfit, Jurassic 5, DJ Nu-Mark graced the group with precision production and cutting edge stage routines.  Best known for his production on the raw anthem “What’s Golden” such creativity only hinted at his imagination since Jurassic 5’s breakup in 2006.  In 2013, J5 reunited with a staggering performance at Coachella which featured a gigantic turntable designed and manipulated by Nu-Mark.
 
Nu introduced himself as a solo artist in 2004 with Blend Crafters, an instrumental EP created in the spirit of allowing beats to speak for themselves.  Later that year Hands On, was released as a mix CD that featured Mc’s rhyming in different languages from around the world.    He has remixed songs for Nas & Damian Marley, created tracks for Saturday Night Live’s Lonely Island and constructed the Tropical Funk mix Take Me With You.  Most significantly, after more than three years of brainstorming, experimenting and collaborating, he’s released his critically acclaimed debut album Broken Sunlight, which reveals his influences and innovations into a jaw dropping collection of heart felt music featuring Aloe Blacc, Charles Bradley, Quantic, Large Professor, Bumpy Knuckles, A-Skillz, Tiron & Ayomari and J-Live.
 
Recently Nu-Mark has been widely recognized for filling his entire stage with children’s music toys and playing them as instruments. This Kids Toy Set went viral when Nu-Mark compiled his performances from around the world in his DVD Nu-Conduit.
 
To date, Nu-Mark has been featured in the critically acclaimed documentaries Scratch, KeepinTime, Coachella: The Movie,Rock the Bells – The Documentary and Mac Grubber.  In 2013 Nu-Mark created original beats and co-scored both Battle Of The Year starring Chris Brown and Ride Along staring Ice Cube and Kevin Hart.
 
Today Nu-Mark has completed a collaborative album with Slimkid3 of Pharcyde which features songs that include Murs, Del, Diamond D, Darondo and J-Live, set to be released on Delicious Vinyl in the summer of 2014.  Stay tuned!

About the CD:
002 of the Classic Mix CD Series and yet another absolute stand out classic. After getting into house at around 15, I guess my only source of info was Danny Rampling's seminal LGDP (Love Groove Dance Party) Saturday nights on Radio 1. However I can't remember Carter getting much coverage on there, yet he, much like Danny Tenaglia seemed to have a level of legend unlike most. This CD cemented my love of house music with an all might smash in the face. The tempo, the bass, the disco, the filters, and fucked up vocals... this was heavyweight. Nothing could compete at the time. I'll always remember driving to college with my 2 nerdy class mates and insisting they played this CD in the car. I'm raving in the back and they are like "What the fuck is this shit, turn it down!". It's with immense pleasure that DJ's like Sneak and Carter seem to be booking all the massive clubs and parties again. I'm not so keen on the whole 'I'm a House Gangster' vibe... but this is as bad as it gets.

Hey, Gareth here, I'm a graphic designer who start designing for clubs, parties, and labels in the late 90s. Back then, mix CDs were the holy grail of both design and music. I loved them.

But I wasn't the only one, mix cds were the soundtracks of our nights, our days, our afterparties and lives, for everyone. Yet in today's internet age, the art form has been lost (or just changed) to 2-3 hour online mixes and streaming videos, which just don't create the same magic your CD collection did. Just 60 minutes of music and incredible artwork.

The Classic Mix CD Series celebrates these discs, their soundtrack, their box art and your memories. We hope you enjoy it.
