About the CD:
Wow, 3 disc's of (as the title suggests) absolute stone cold classics. This disc really was the soundtrack of my pre 'proper clubbing' days trying to get into the bars and clubs of Sunderland City Centre. This CD features some absolute bangers like Tony Di Bart's 'The Real Thing', Hard Drive's legendary 'Deep Inside', Felix's 'Don't You Want Me", Sub Sub's "Ain't No Love" and well... the list really does go on, and on, and on, and on. I hope you all enjoy this mix as many of us have. Play it LOUD!

About the cd:
So this release came out at the peak of my clubbing days and coincided with 'that visit to Gatecrasher' on the summer bank holiday of 2008. Which came about due to the rest of the gang all heading down to the first ever Creamfields (Or maybe it was Homelands by then). From what I can remember, the club was a huge, 2 roomed rave temple with followers of it's religion going mental each and every weekend. One of the lads freaked out at the amount of 'colourful' clubbers in his vicinity and went and sat in the car alone all night! (Actual LOL here).

But about the CD, considering this is the 'Early set' you can get an idea of how banging this club was. And of course went onto become the new super club of the north and throwing parties around the world with countless other CD releases. Since the early 90's, I'd say there are a handful of house music record labels that managed to define a sound and stay ahead of the crowd... and Junior Boys Own is definitely one of them. Formed by Terry Farley & Steve Hall in 1992, the West London label was part of the 'Boys Own Collective' back then, a group of friends who DJ'd, promoted, produced records and ran a fanzine. The collective included Terry Farley, Pete Heller, Andrew Weatherall, and Tom & Ed (The Chemical Brothers) amongst others. The label released dozens of house classics in the 90's from artists including Fire Island, The Black Science Orchestra, Roach Motel, X-Press 2, and Outrage - all of whom feature on this mix. In my humble opinion, JBO was and always will be a true house music hero.

As always, this was mixed live on two Technics 1210's and an Allen & Heath Xone 22 mixer. No cheating with technology.

My old school sets are inspired by the cassettes I heard just as I was getting into the dance/ rave scene as a teenager in roughly '90-'92. Those tapes came from places including Grin DJ's (Vertigo/ Welly, Jon Kelly), Shelleys (Sasha, Dave Seaman, Nipper), and some of the bigger raves at the time including Fantazia, Obsession, Universe ect. 

Everything I mix is done on two Technics with Allen & Heath Xone22 mixer via Serato scratch live.

Hey, Gareth here, I'm a graphic designer who start designing for clubs, parties, and labels in the late 90s. Back then, mix CDs were the holy grail of both design and music. I loved them.

But I wasn't the only one, mix cds were the soundtracks of our nights, our days, our afterparties and lives, for everyone. Yet in today's internet age, the art form has been lost (or just changed) to 2-3 hour online mixes and streaming videos, which just don't create the same magic your CD collection did. Just 60 minutes of music and incredible artwork.

The Classic Mix CD Series celebrates these discs, their soundtrack, their box art and your memories. We hope you enjoy it.
