It is hard to sum up just how much of an impact Ralph Lawson has had over his 35 years career in the scene.From managing his 2020Vision label to holding down a wide range of residencies, his dedication to the craft is truly inspirational and this interview is a beautiful glimpse into his vision.The mix he delivered us is a very special journey. It is selected and paced as expertly as you'd expect from someone who’s been playing records since more than three decades. Earlier this year Matt Anniss released the book Join The Future - UK Bleep & Bass 1988-91. Some five years in the making it tells the story of the rise of British dance music during the late 80s and 90s. To coincide with this book, Optimo (espacio) founding member JD @Twitch has put together a compilation with some of the key tracks during this period. To celebrate the release of this compilation we have a special mix focussing on these genres Bleep Techno & Bass.  JD Twitch effortlessly pulls together classics from the genre starting with the seminal Test Four from Richard H. Kirk and DJ Parrot, through his own remix of Nightmares on Wax’s Dextrous,  LFO, Tough Little Unit and Ital Rockers. Sitting neatly alongside these blueprints, we have modern productions on labels indebted to this sound such as Batu’s 2017 Hessle Audio cut Marius, I-iii’s Livity Sound release and Luca Lozano’s And It Was Good - released through Twitch’s own Optimo Trax.

The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.
