DJ's Set

DJ and producer, Terry Farley heads back to the 'second summer of love' and celebrates some of the biggest Acid House tracks, 25 years on.

Along with Andrew Weatherall, the duo started the now notorious Boy's Own fanzine in 1986, which commented on the slang, the parties, the tunes and the humour of the acid house days, and which also lead to the creation of the label Junior Boys Own. This imprint specialised in dance music and put out records by Orbital and Dig Your Own Hole by The Chemical Brothers, which celebrates 15 years this year.

Terry began making productions with Andy Weatherall, Hugo Nicholson and Pete Heller under the name Bocca Juniors. He later teamed up with Pete Heller and has gone on to re-mix many of the world's leading artists and singers: everyone from U2 to New Order; to the Happy Mondays and Primal Scream at the height of Balearica. He has also produced Kylie Minogue, The Farm and M People.

Deejay/producer, Chicago House purist, JR From Dallas draws his influences from jackin, deep and tech-house, but keeping that 90's house oldschool beat.

His tracks have been played by the finest's underground house djs such as Mark Farina, Phil Weeks, Hector Moralez, 1200 Warriors, Nick Holder, Roger Sanchez …

In 2007, he launches his label GOURMAND MUSIC RECORDINGS signing essentially american artists but also european talents. Gourmand's roster includes Giano, Cubase Dan, Tommy Largo, Bart Ricardo, Masss and Dave Dubbz just to name a few.

In 2011, Phil Weeks discovers him and signs him to Robsoul Recordings where he released a successful EP. That same year, JR From Dallas entered the family of the legendary american label TANGO RECORDINGS

JR From Dallas is now an established artist known for his unique Jackin sound. You can also find JR's music on Farris Wheel Recordings, Greenhouse Recordings, Maracuja Recordings, Phobic Recordings, Funkfield Recordings, Kolour Recordings…

JR From Dallas has been playing for many years and reached today an international level that gets him to play in Poland, Germany, England, Holland, Belgium, Czeck Republic, Slovakia to name a few.

About the CD:
So happy to finally get to hear disc one of this brilliant cd. When I originally swapped the disc way back in 1998 it only had disc 2... and I'm delighted to discover this one is just as good. It's an absolutely epic house double CD, released in 1996 by the fine folks at Ministry Of Sound. And one which is another great reason to celebrate and remember the man himself, thank you Frankie. Mark Farina, a true pioneer and long standing House Gangster is in the hot seat for episode 6 of the Gangstercast and we're extremely proud to have him on-board.  Mark's mixes are the stuff of legend and have seen him touring the globe as one of Chicago's best loved musical exports for many years. Now based in San Francisco, Chicago still provides his roots to the House Gangster sound, "For me, the House Gangster movement means capturing the spirit of the days when there were true gangsters listening to house in chicago in the late eighties. White, latino, black...the only sound of the underground in the streets was house music. The sound has a certain rawness, toughness, trackyness and attitude that combines into a certain style of house."

Regarding his Gangstercast, Mark says the tracks are, "Selected goodies from my arsenal of new underground jammies. No special planning though. Pick a starting point and go from there, with just a vibe in mind to fit this Gangstercast."

And his view on house music, you may just have heard it before: "In the beginning, there was Jack, and Jack had a groove. And from this groove came the groove of all grooves. And while one day viciously throwing down on his box, Jack boldly declared, "Let there be HOUSE!" and House music was born."

Hey, Gareth here, I'm a graphic designer who start designing for clubs, parties, and labels in the late 90s. Back then, mix CDs were the holy grail of both design and music. I loved them.

But I wasn't the only one, mix cds were the soundtracks of our nights, our days, our afterparties and lives, for everyone. Yet in today's internet age, the art form has been lost (or just changed) to 2-3 hour online mixes and streaming videos, which just don't create the same magic your CD collection did. Just 60 minutes of music and incredible artwork.

The Classic Mix CD Series celebrates these discs, their soundtrack, their box art and your memories. We hope you enjoy it.
