About the CD:
For the 20th episode of the Classic Mix CD Series we asked friend of the show and fellow north east lad Mr Ian Blevins to recommend his favourite all time classic disc. Being one of the most talented selectors and dj's you will likely ever hear... Ian came back to us with what is a truly exceptional 'Choice' and it stands out to him simply by being the most outrageously good CD he always remembered. We've played this 4 times already and see where he's coming from. It features tracks such as Mission Control's 'Outer Limits', the dark lyrics of Tony Cook's 'On The Floor', the outrageously fun Hugh Masekela's 'Don't Go Lose It Baby' and the famous 'The Whistle Song' by Frankie Knuckles.

You can catch Blev closing the summer season at his We Love, Space residency in Ibiza where he spins on the Premier Etage every weekend. As well as a selection of other gigs around the island. Here's one of many mixes from Derrick Carter that I have, this one I'm pretty sure is from December 1995.  It's a cassette tape transfer, but sound is pretty good, and, as ever, Derrick's skills are immense.

Back in October 2019 we took over Oval Space for a mammoth 10 hours with our good friends Little Gay Brother. Finally we have the recording of the whole night which we would love to share with all of you who were there that night and those who were not! Here is part 1 of the night and Part 2 will follow next week!

The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.

Hey, Gareth here, I'm a graphic designer who start designing for clubs, parties, and labels in the late 90s. Back then, mix CDs were the holy grail of both design and music. I loved them.

But I wasn't the only one, mix cds were the soundtracks of our nights, our days, our afterparties and lives, for everyone. Yet in today's internet age, the art form has been lost (or just changed) to 2-3 hour online mixes and streaming videos, which just don't create the same magic your CD collection did. Just 60 minutes of music and incredible artwork.

The Classic Mix CD Series celebrates these discs, their soundtrack, their box art and your memories. We hope you enjoy it.
