About the CD:
For our 23rd episode we once again asked a friend of the site for their favourite all time CD. Andy Buchan is editor of Dubai's leading music and events publication, the fortnightly Infusion magazine. He's written for Mix Mag, DJ mag and Q magazine so he know's a thing or two about music. He's also one of the Dubai's best DJ's. Running his award winning alternative night Loaded and the famous dubstep and bass night SYNF amongst others. Andy has warmed up for anyone and everyone from 2ManyDJ's, to Norman Jay, Beardyman to Chase and Status and held down residencies at pretty much every quality venue in Dubai.

He originally picked Francios K's Choice disc... but as we just had a Choice disc from our last guest (We Luv's Ian Blevins) he also recommended Francios K's superb Essential Mix (Disc One). Which is a storming journey of starting with house and quickly moving into funk, disco, soul and everything in between. With from James Brown, Level 42, Maurizio, George Benson, Chaka Khan, Kyoto Jazz Massive to name a few... it's easy to see why Francios K has formed such legendary status with many of the finest selectors out there. If you love this mix... you're amongst very good company. Salute!

I went digging deep for these events and this is a selection of some of my favourites that I found. The first in a series of new mixes from The Classic Mix CD Series...  _SESSIONS brings you choice cuts from our friends, family and maybe a few special guests along the way. For the third instalment of the new _SESSIONS series we invited old friend Eddie Leader from Hudd Traxx for what is a mix of the highest house calibre. We originally met in the early 2000s in our student years, djing at our local party and since then Eddie has gone on to run a successful label, Hudd Traxx for over 12 years now and dj all around the world.

The label has received worldwide support from DJ's like Luciano, Loco Dice, Derrick Carter, Mark Farina, Josh Wink & more. Hudd Traxx music has been licensed to various compilations including Ministry Of Sound, Fabric & OM. If that's not house music royalty we don't know what is.

SESSIONS_04 comes from friend of the show, Antony Daly aka 586 of the most excellent 586 Records in Newcastle, England. We've actually had this on the iPod for years but Tony has very kindly offered it up again for a re-airing. It really it quite seminal stuff. Be sure to call into 586 Records when you're in town and here's a few words from the man himself...

'Recorded, late into the Night, January 2003. A live, one hit mix via Suade's Studio in Sandyford, Newcastle upon Tyne. A personal soundtrack to a difficult time in my life. Poor health and unrequited love. Hopefully, the lyrics in these great songs and the overall mood of the mix, reflect that. Enjoy and thanks for listening'.

For the 5th instalment, we hooked up with Dubai's number one hat wearing, vinyl addict... Shadi Megallaa. He's got links to some of the city's finest musical happenings, such as the immensely good Analog Room (which is nothing short of a Dubai institution) and also runs the Ark to Ashes label. This mix called... 'Less is More' is over 15 years old, yet remains one of his favourite personal selections. We agree, it's exceptional. Many thanks fella!

Some words from Shadi:
'Less is More is my 2nd proper mix from back in the early 2000s. The 1st one being a mix called Impulse. It was recorded on a Philips CDR 775 Recorder. Back in those days there were no daws or digital recording. The mix was recorded in real time on a cd. One mistake & you had to throw away the cd and start all over.  I guess you can feel that tension in the mix & hence why it still sounds good almost 15 years later. Hope you enjoy it.'

For the 6th instalment, we caught up with Simon Stuart aka The Sonic Emporium, a fellow North East England lad who originally caught our eye way back in the early 2000s throwing some refreshing Sunday parties in Newcastle with his former collective People Get Real, along with festival appearances that were pretty much unheard of from local DJs back then. He later became one of the driving sounds of the legendary Wax:On events in both Newcastle and Leeds which really raised the bar during a time when the clubbing scene struggling for a new identity.

Currently residing in London, Simon features across the capital's bars, clubs and radio shows. He's busy producing as The Sonic Emporium and making regular appearances at some of Croatia's finest festivals (including the next one to look out for Obonjan). Thanks for the mix fella, enjoy! 

Some words from Simon:
It’s around 8/9 years old this mix now and throws up some mixed emotions and memories of that period in my life. It was a one-take job, with a couple of post edits to tighten transitions as it was going out as a podcast for club night, Wax:On, who I’d been ressie for back in Newcastle and Leeds. Wax:On was going through something of a transition itself, moving around and trying out different spaces like Mint Club which had always been a dream of mine to play in since I went to Basics there in the 90’s. I’d had a solid stretch of doing big warm-up gigs, festivals and regular parties for about 7 years up to this stage, 

I’d not long moved to London and think this was the first thing I’d done since splitting with People Get Real. It was a tougher move than I though it would be, truth be told. A little fish again, and in a gigantic pond. It’s especially difficult when you’ve not got your mates on hand all the time to bounce ideas off. As a result, I kind of just kept my head down, absorbing lots of what the capital had to offer, finding new digging spots for records and playing all night long, hassle free, at a little bar across in Islington. I guess it was like jacking in the day job to go back to college. Working out what I wanted to do for myself. It was especially good having the quarterly Lucky Cloud parties with David Mancuso happening just a couple of miles from my house at The Light. He was still regularly playing them at that time and I’d be there from the doors opening. The sound was incredible and the range of music, often surprisingly upfront and contemporary, was a real head cracker. Love saves the day!

 Listening back, it still ticks a lot of boxes for me this, music that feels pretty timeless. I think it still sounds relevant, happily. Frankie Knuckles producing Pet Shop Boys, Malcolm McLaren, Raf, Levan’s mix of Sun Shower, Jarvis Cocker even pops up at one point. What’s not to like?

Hey, Gareth here, I'm a graphic designer who start designing for clubs, parties, and labels in the late 90s. Back then, mix CDs were the holy grail of both design and music. I loved them.

But I wasn't the only one, mix cds were the soundtracks of our nights, our days, our afterparties and lives, for everyone. Yet in today's internet age, the art form has been lost (or just changed) to 2-3 hour online mixes and streaming videos, which just don't create the same magic your CD collection did. Just 60 minutes of music and incredible artwork.

The Classic Mix CD Series celebrates these discs, their soundtrack, their box art and your memories. We hope you enjoy it.
