One of the many reasons I continue to do this Ancient Puzzle Arts podcast is to develop artistic relationships with people I would like to get to know better. For this month, it's a pleasure to introduce to you Philadelphia's own Keen.

I have been familiar with Keen's work because of the excellently curated Subsurface parties in Philadelphia, which he does alongside John Raffaele. I was further impressed to see Philly talent make it onto Boiler Room in 2019. But the part that sealed the deal for me was having Max Sprauer, a regular APA contributor, recommend him and say "you got to check him out!" With all these factors, it made perfect sense to get Keen on for the podcast series.

To say Keen's mix is entirely "minimal" is not accurate. There is a minimal tech house sensibility that drives the momentum of this mix, but he definitely explores elements of deep house and electro. When you listen to this mix, be sure to listen on a system with good sub bass to notice the subtlety of frequencies he's working with, and in a traditional techno techno sense, notice how he plays with layers upon layers of blends seamlessly.

Summer has almost officially started here on the East Coast of the United States, and this is an excellent way to kick things off! Enjoy!

Tiago was born and bred in Lisbon Portugal before his love of music landed him in Berlin in 2008. Here he played regularly in some of the cities most revered spots and started his collaboration with the Baschtelzen collective, building /designing  & running stages at Fusion & Garbicz Festival. 
He then made the big leap to the southern hemisphere as a DJ, promoter and set designer at many of the major festivals across Australia. Tiago is also one of the co-founders of the magical Air Festival in Bali as well as the monthly Basement Love Parties . But Tiago is above all a DJ’s DJ, covering anything from Detroit house & techno, to rare old school garage, to 70’s African disco.

Back in 1999, label boss Ewan Jansen took receipt of demo tapes by Kai Kroker (AKA Rawell) who subsequently appeared on Red Ember’s very first compilation record ‘Deepsounds One’. These forgotten demos (lost even to Rawell himself) plus further works from 1995-2002, span a 2LP release of deeply emotive minimal house, techno & leftfield; an earnest synthesis of minimalism and romance from Berlin in the 90s. Included
also is an ambient/downbeat 6-track digital EP (including the original version of ‘Tailwind’). Move D’s gloriously moody and life-affirming ‘90s galore mix’ of ‘Tailwind’ is a very special reunion between close friends;
the pair’s last collaboration dates back to 2005 under the ‘Faked.Info’ moniker and both recorded together along with Jamie
Hodge under the collective ‘Studio Pankow’.

She has joined our own Upside Your Mind down in Yorks' Sotano basement numerous times and also runs the Imaginarium in Leeds plus the Hideous Things and Shso projects. 
This edition is a shifting and evolving ride into one of the Complexa's deeper energies, here we find ourselves holding on as Roya expertly guides us down to feel its embrace.

The mix’s journey reminds more of our planet with its natural and ethnic diversity, where costumed people are dancing between plants.
