Welcome to Dazion’s Grooveboxxx – a maxi-sized love letter to The Hague’s 80s and 90s club scene crafted with minimal tools and loaded with vibe. It’s no coincidence it arrives on Dekmantel, a label with its own roots in the same Dutch city’s electronic music culture.

Dazion is The Hague’s Cris Kuhlen, previously spotted releasing on Second Circle, Safe Trip and Animals Dancing. He cut his teeth clubbing and working at long-since closed clubs like Eau, described in Kuhlen’s own words as, “clubs with blocks to dance on, lazers, decorations, crazy extravert [sic] parties.”

In capturing the spirit of Eau and the other formative parties of his youth, Kuhlen limited himself to just one machine to make his longest work to date – the Roland MC-303 Groovebox. While these entry level units from the mid-90s had stripped down functionality in the wider spectrum of studio gear, they contained all the iconic Roland sounds in a Rompler style, giving the user access to everything necessary to make raw, immediate club tracks without requiring an entire studio’s worth of hardware.

The brash gear of choice set the tone for a record of rough, ready and playful jams which end up more sophisticated than you’d expect from such limited means. ‘La DS’ jacks with a freaky, bleep techno intensity, while ‘Kimberly & Nance Backstage Rehearsal’ rides an angular groove tooled to inspire the weirdest dance moves of the night. Every track is named in reference to a particular nightspot, a hazy memory or moment from Kuhlen’s formative raving years.

This is the sound of Dazion having the time of his life. You might well hear a nod to the odd rock totem being given a re-version in irreverent new beat style or some gnarly US acid breaks vibes riding underneath helium rap licks. But for all the cheekiness, the tracks stand up both as nods to halcyon days and relevant workouts for the sweatiest parties in the here and now. As MC Paul T says in dramatic style heralding the intro of Grooveboxxx, “This movement will live on forever.”

OUR OPERATIVES TRACKED DAZION TO A REMOTE SPOT ON THE DUTCH COAST, WHERE HE WAS SPOTTED TRIALLING THIS NEW TECHNOLOGY WITH HIS FAVOURED F2 DRAGON BOARD. AS HE RODE THE CHOPPY WAVES, WE WERE ABLE TO DETECT AND RECORD RHYTHMICAL ELECTRONIC MUSIC EMINATING FROM THE BOARD ITSELF. WE ENCLOSE THIS RECORDING, WHICH FEATURES THE KIND OF TRIBALISTIC, DELAY-LADEN DRUMS, SWELLING ELECTRONICS AND EXOTIC MELODIC REFRAINS THAT ARE KNOWN TO INSPIRE FRENZIED DANCING IN MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC. WE HAVE CHRISTENED THIS RECORDING “DRAGON WAVE”.

AFTER EXITING THE WATER, DAZION PACKED UP HIS TOP-SECRET WINDSURFING TECHNOLOGY AND DROVE TO A BACKSTREET ADDRESS IN A QUIET AREA OF AMSTERDAM. THERE, IN A LIGHT INDUSTRIAL UNIT, HE CONTINUED TO TINKER WITH THE TECHNOLOGY, TESTING IT OUT BY BROADCASTING ANOTHER MUSICAL COMPOSITION. THIS WAS MORE POIGNANT AND MELANCHOLIC IN TONE, UTILISING SPAACEY ELECTRONIC MELODIES, GENTLY BOBBING CHORDS, HEART-ACHING GUITAR FLOURISHES AND A TOUGH BUT BROKEN RHYTHM TRACK. THE RECORDING – CODE NAME “VX LTD” – HAD A HUGE IMPACT ON US EMOTIONALLY AND EVEN REDUCED ONE OPERATIVE TO TEARS.

IT IS OUR BELIEF THAT THE SAFE TRIP ORGANISATION WILL ONLY INCREASE IN STRENGTH WITH DAZION’S INVOLVEMENT. WE RECOMMEND WATCHING THE WAVES AND WINDS INTENTLY FOR FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS.

Munich. 1994. A group buck current trends with a ground-breaking release. Tikitaka by Tamburá left aside the techno of the time to focus on a the lesser known styles of afrobeat and tribal music. The result was three tracks that sail and soar on a primal energy, three works that whisk listeners away to exotic lands of wooden wind instruments, ritualistic vocals and, even, bag pipe majesty. For twenty five years this record has been an unattainable mystery, until now that is. Kalahari Oyster Cult have lovingly restored all three of the trailblazing original tracks alongside two very special remixes. Melbourne’s Tornado Wallace adds new layers of intensity as he cuts and reshapes melodies and beats to set any floor alight with this visionary remake. Dazion offers a very different interpretation. Focusing on vocals, this new talent accentuates the shamanic-like chants of Tikitaka, using them as a base from which throbbing synth lines grow as new depths are explored. An EP every bit as daring in 2019 as it was in 1994.

Pink fog rises amidst the hills; dew covers all in silver paint glittering in the background. layers covering layers of low clouds, fog and haze. Shimmering city lights. Silhouettes of figures sitting in the hills, hanging in bridges, on top of houses, looking upon, observing city drive from up high as if it was a meditating bonfire. A notion of something going to happen. But all that remains is a glimpse of pink fog hanging static in the air.

Risks Issues Opportunities, the third release from Berlin based @RIOLabel brings together a collection of electronic wave music from six different performers with one common ground: their mysterious & slightly melancholic aesthetics.

Our pick comes from Hague based artist @theDazion who delivers a moody, atmospheric track in ' Lights in the City' which is really  fitting our Sunday mood.

Melbourne imprint Animals Dancing & Dutch producer, Dazion present a little surprise during these dystopian days we find ourselves in. A fast-tracked, straight to digital pre-release for all of humanity to dance in the apocalypse in self-isolated pleasure (before the vinyl is released).

On Animals Dancing’s eighth disc, Dazion aka Cris Kuhlen lets rip with three psychoactive, percussion-laden mind benders for all good dance floors.

A tweaked vocoder mantra speaks in tongues across interlaced layers of live percussion on ‘Yu Go Bah’ before sirens ring in the distant chants.

Blood Moon takes the marching band down to the basement, fusing more twisted percussion with electro squelch to soundtrack the sweat rain down from the heavens.

’The Chant Of Celebrational Beings’ beckons in a sunrise as the last inklings of serotonin jerk a tear to your eye.
