Best Kept Secrets III

Decided to go back to the Serato box (yes I still rock the original Serato 1 box and have yet to upgrade) and just "freestyle" a mix of all kinds of joints! Ran through a number of things and kept it all around 98bpm, per the title of this episode. Might start doing this once in awhile - fun to just mix stuff quickly and see what happens. Enjoy!

Pullin from the Stacks - Around 98bpm Mix

My little show has turned five! Five years ago, just days before my second child was due to be born, I for some reason decided it was a good time to start a radio show. And so that’s what I did - the show was called Funkier Radio and it wasn’t a real radio show, because I prerecorded it and just put it up on Soundcloud. But now it’s live, on a real radio station and has been renamed Funkier Sounds. Over the years I’ve had some brilliant guests including The Reflex, Michael Gray, Danielle Moore, loads of less known but still brilliant DJs and a whole load of my friends, and for this celebratory episode I brought you another very special guest.

My guest was Sam Redmore, a DJ and producer who I’ve loved for a few years now. Someone on the more funk & soul side of the sounds I’m into rather than the house and disco side, Sam was the perfect selector to help me mark the fifth birthday. Sam’s mix is brimming with funky delights - funk and soul originals and reworks, some hip hop stuff, some jazzy stuff, some of his own stuff… a fast moving, funky and really enjoyable mix!

80s Funky/Soul/Disco Hits - April Mix

After the huge reaction to his ‘Disco Doctor’ mix Spin Doctor keeps it soulful again as he explains:

“In the midst of a 2 week Corona Virus Isolation I'm thinking about good music to bring us through and what better than the sweet sound of Soul. I put together a few of my fave soulful cuts. Not all strictly soul but definitely soulful! Music to lift the spirit and maybe move the body from Al Green, Roy Ayers, Prince, Mary J and more.

I'd finished the mix with the incredible “Wake Up Everybody” which felt very right given the current pandemic situation but soon as I had finished the mix I heard the tragic news about Bill Withers (RIP).

That hit me hard so I took a moment and shed a tear. Bill's one of my favourite artists ever and so I had to add a little 3 tune Bill Withers mix to the end of what was already a finished mix opening with ‘I’ll Be With You’ and it’s apt opening line of Bill singing… ‘I’ll be with you till heaven comes and takes me away’.

I enjoyed making this tape. It's a bit different from my more crunchy, vinyl-heavy mixes, but hopefully still bump-able at the local evening picnic or house party. You can do silly dances to it, or just cool out and sip a nice iced beverage while it rocks in the background. Either way, don't sleep on the Vijay Iyer's jazz cover of MIA's "Galang."

I'm planning on doing a series of "seasonal" mixes, in combination with covers from a variety of artists and photographers I know. The first cover is from world traveler, documentarian and incredible photographer Daniel Littlewood, a close friend since high school.
