Tastemaking modern labels Apparel Music and The Dub have hooked up to put out one release on two labels on the same day, with both having different covers but featuring the same two hot tracks. 

Apparel Music owner Kisk is behind one cut here and is an accomplished Italian who has multi-cultural roots that really show in his music. He has DJed everywhere from fabric to Tresor and has collaborated with a wide range of artists on his label. His ‘Blissanova’ track is as the name suggests - perfectly summery and breezy with rich melodies, tooting instruments and loose, louche drums. Full of top trumpet vibes, flowery motifs and humid chords, it’s a perfect outdoors house track to get people moving. 
Then comes fellow Italian Claudio Coccoluto who boasts a collection of more than 70,000 records, is a widely published music writer, skilled DJ who plays all over the world and has created soundtracks for some of the world’s biggest brands. His contribution here is the delightful ‘Unbelievable.’ It’s a real jumble of percussive sounds, vocal ad libs and piano keys all driven by a house kick and noodly saxophone patterns. As lush as you like and stuffed with effusive musical vibes and emotions, it’s a sure fire winner. 
The cover image for this great release is by Massimo Mariotti, and the EP has been mastered by Stefan Eichinger aka LOPAZZ, and the music is beautifully original. 

This is a super tidy two track package that is perfectly mastered and offers some truly standout music from two modern Italian greats.

Al started out DJing at various warehouse parties around London in the late eighties. DJing and running several successful parties at the notorious Brain Club and playing at Clockwork Orange, Back To Basics, Miss Moneypennys, Pure night at the Milk Bar in London and much more. During this time he formed a musical partnership with Peter Cunnah and D:ream was born. They captured the number one spot in the U.S. and U.K. dance charts in mid-1992 with their first single, 'U R The Best Thing'. The follow up single, 'Things can Only Get Better' hit No.1 in the UK and several charts worldwide in 1994 when re-released

Al plays a mix of bent electronic house, sometimes a bit of disco, soul, funk, dub and whatever takes his fancy putting it together brilliantly all with a tripped out feel.

He makes music with Chris Kentish (Field Theory)under their Field Of Dreams guise and runs the Field of Dreams record label

Just over a decade on from the launch of Leng Records, the Simon Purnell/Paul ‘Mudd’ Murphy-helmed label is set to release its’ 50th 12” single. Fittingly, it’s the first of a series of sampler EPs that form part of the imprint’s belated 10th anniversary celebrations.

In 2020, label fans will be treated to a celebratory compilation featuring a mixture of Leng classics, overlooked favourites and previously unheard material. Some of this music will also be released on a series of vinyl EPs, with this first volume focusing on unreleased material from long-time friends of the family Q&A and Lex.

Q&A is a collaboration between Phenomenal Handclap Band mainstay Quinn Luke, and long-time friend and musical associate Alexis Georgopoulos, formerly of San Francisco dub disco/punk funk heroes Tussle. The pair worked together extensively at the tail end of the 2000s, but only ever released one single: 2009’s “Tumbling Cubes/Trap Door” on celebrated NYC label DFA.

The two tracks showcased on this Leng Records sampler were recorded during the same period as that celebrated single but are only now seeing the light of day. “RM” is a typically low-slung and percussive affair that sees Luke and Georgopoulos wrap bubbly electronic melodies and glassy-eyed aural textures around a suitably weighty dub disco groove. In contrast, “Pulse” is a deliciously hypnotic, mind-altering affair: a bona-fide late night throb-job in which trippy electronic motifs, chiming melodies and crunchy Clavinet riffs vibrate attractively atop another killer punk-funk bassline and locked-in drums.

Over on side B, Athens scene staple Lex takes over. The Greek DJ/producer – real name Alex Andrikopoulos – first rose to prominence locally when he ran the Radical Soundz record shop in the first decade of the century but has since become better-known worldwide for offering up music and DJ sets that frequently join the dots between disco, house and techno.

The two tracks he’s delivered for the Leng 10th birthday sampler series are typically warm, loose and groovy, drawing more inspiration from ‘70s disco and ‘80s electrofunk than contemporary club culture. For proof, first check the mid-tempo sparkle of “GP Score”, an organic disco-boogie number rich in low-slung bass, razor-sharp flanged guitars, colourful synthesizer lead lines, early house style piano solos and the kind of squelchy electronic bass more often featured on kaleidoscopic P-funk records. 

This attractively rubbery synth-bass sound can also be heard on “Max Pen”, a slightly deeper and more laidback affair crafted from an attractive mix of loose-limbed drums, mazy synth solos, jangling piano motifs and sweet, spaced-out chords. Retro-futurist in nature, the track offers further evidence of Lex’s increasingly expressive, funky and musically rich trademark sound.

He may have relatively few releases to his name, but Boogie Café’s latest signing, Piers Kirwan, is no fresh-faced newcomer. Kirwan first rose to prominence in the first decade of the century as one half of Clubstar and Defected-promoted duo Stereo Mutants, before deciding to focus on solo productions and remixes back in 2012. Since then, Kirwan has built a reputation on the electronic underground as a producer of quality house music. With solo projects on Grant Nelson’s Freeze Dried label, King street and Vibe Boutique. He took his Boogie Café bow five years ago via a much-played remix of Chezz’s ‘Good Things’.

On the Dialogue EP, Kirwan’s first solo set for almost three years, the long-serving producer aptly showcases his musical dexterity via a quartet of cuts rich in sassy deep house sounds, tactile motifs, great grooves and some seriously emotive vocal samples.

He sets the tone with opener ‘Parley’, where a lone, reverb-laden trumpet heralds the arrival of a crunchy, loose-limbed broken beat number packed to the rafters with woozy synth riffs, heady hand percussion, undulating bass and some suitably seductive synth sounds. He explores a deeper shade of “bruk” on ‘Wurly’, where throbbing, strobe-lit synth stabs, tight male vocal samples, ear-catching keys and squelchy jazz-funk bass ride a jazz-powered rhythm.

The house side of his musical personality comes to the fore on ‘Afraid of the Dark’, a powerful and clandestine late-night deep house workout that sees Kirwan make merry with snappy, clap-happy beats, low-slung bass, alien electronics and echoing melodic motifs. There’s a similarly locked-in, early morning vibe to title track ‘Dialog’, which applies similarly delay-laden vocal snippets, hazy riffs and sleazy analogue bass. This time, though, the beats are broken and Latin-tinged, though it’s their crunchiness and toughness that catches the ear. Hypnotic, heady and addictive, ‘Dialog’ delivers a suitably impressive end to one of Kirwan’s strongest EPs to date.

if you're gonna start the new year with a bang then what better way to do it than with an incredible selection of balearic tinged exotica from a long standing (and personal) friend of us, Mr Dan Wainwright and his 'Hope & Deliverance' E.P.

Lead off track 'I Love You' is all kinds of hazy wooziness & spaced out synths & pads with a slack as heck broken beat that all mixes & swirls in the right places along this cosmic journey.

Nothing Ever Stays The Same keeps on the cosmic path and goes with a dubbed out bass thump for added measure with some full on hypnotic vocal action that sews the package up and feels a bit like Moby when he was really good and not such a bell end.

Feel ups the tempo slightly but keeps things trip and demanding some sun beams at overseas festivals. This is some serious daytime dancing style tackle that will uplift & bliss in equal measures.

Closing track 'I Hope That Joy Will Come To You' is a definite message for everyone to mantra after the rubbish's of 2020. Delay drenched synth chords & kaleidoscope pads wrap around a hooky ukulele (as played live by Dan!) and a psych'd out vocal from the man himself. No beats on this at all, they're not needed. This is pure class in a glass!
