This is the first in a new monthly series I'm hoping to do for 2022: "Knowledge Breaks." Each episode will be a short mix of breakbeats and samples from my collection, overlaid with excerpts from some of my favorite inspirational, radical people. 

When I was thinking of who to feature first, my partner Bina made the great suggestion of starting with the incredible bell hooks, who sadly passed last month. bell hooks wrote about love, Black liberation, feminism, and so much more. Her book "All About Love" was and is very important to me. I highly recommend everyone seek out her work, especially those involved in the educational or academic fields. There is no way to do justice to legendary people like bell hooks in such a short little mix. These are just a few excerpts I found compelling. French vocalist, beatboxer, songwriter and producer Sly Johnson unveils 55.4, his much-anticipated fourth studio album, released on BBE Music.

Hailing from Paris, Sylvère Johnson (Sly Johnson) is a major force on the French Hip-Hop, Soul and Jazz scenes, both as a solo artist and as a member of super-group SAIAN SUPA CREW for over a decade, where he was known by the moniker Sly The Mic Buddah.

When the crew broke up in 2007, Johnson began to carve out an impressive career, releasing on Blue Note and Universal Jazz, as well as collaborating with Larry Gold, Roddy Rod, T3 & Elzhi from Slum Village, Georgia Ann Muldrow, Dudley Perkins, FINALE, Erik Truffaz, and legendary French rapper Oxmo Puccino to IAM among many others.

Written and recorded during the first COVID lockdowns between March and May 2020, Sly Johnson’s fourth album blends Soul and Hip Hop, twinning vocal arrangements reminiscent of Prince and D’Angelo with loose, supple, beats and jazzy chords. Most of the musical heavy lifting is done by Johnson himself, but the album features bass by Laurent Salzard, guitar by Ralph Lavital and Anthony Jambon, keys by Nicholas Vella & Laurent Coulondre and a spellbinding guest vocal by Jona Oak.

Why 55.4? “It took 55 days of creation to make the songs of this 4th solo album” says Sly.

The remix represents Philadelphia at its best, King Britt has been an artist that I have had the honor to perform with and learn many things just by watching him.  I am thankful that he has remixed one of my favorite songs from the album originally produced by artist Wizard Apprentice.  Time Float speaks about the environmental warfare that continues to plague historical African American and low income communities.

The Du-Rites are a funk duo comprised of Jay Mumford and Pablo Martin. Pablo on guitar and bass guitar; Jay on drums and percussion. They split the keyboard/synthesizer duties. Individually, Pablo plays guitar with the legendary Tom Tom Club and spent years as a mastering engineer. Jay has worked as a drummer live and/or in studio for Danger Mouse, Adrian Quesada, Dan Auerbach, Binky Griptite(Daptone), Soul Supreme, Just Blaze, Lord Finesse and many others, as well as being sampled by Madlib ("Road of the Lonely Ones"), Mark Ronson and others. In addition to four studio albums, one live album, an EP and seven 7" singles under their own name, The Du-Rites have worked with a wide range of talents since their inception in 2016, including Eddie Palmieri, Robert Glasper and Ghostface Killah. They also scored a large portion of the original music for Bobbito Garcia's Rock Rubber 45s film.
