Hampshire psychedelic shoegaze trio Is Bliss continue to cause a stir with the release of new EP ‘The Honeycomb Explosion’, released 19th May on celebrated label, Club AC30. 

Having received rave reviews for last year’s debut release ‘Velvet Dreams’, produced by Pat Collier (The House of Love, Primal Scream, Swervedriver), the band’s rise has been swift having formed in late 2015. The band were soon signed by acclaimed London based independent record label Club AC30, a label that has a habit of developing artists from the psych/gaze/electronic & dream-pop genres including such acts as Pinkshiunyultrablast, Ringo Deathstarr and Flyying Colours.

With a shared love of Slowdive, Spacemen 3 and Verve, Is Bliss’s first year has seen the band turn heads with their explosive live shows and have supported the likes of Wolf Alice, Telescopes, Nine Black Alps, Mark Gardener and Robin Guthrie in a whirlwind twelve months. The band have also received radio support from the likes of Lauren Laverne, Tom Ravenscroft and Radcliffe & Maconie at BBC Radio 6 Music along with BBC Introducing and Amazing Radio. 

Building on the success of the band’s debut, ‘The Honeycomb Explosion’ opens with the soporific ‘Someone’ that echoes The Warlocks before giving way to effervescent guitars and wig-out drums.

‘Alive (Baby Come On)’ hypnotizes and mesmerises in equal measure, providing a heavy dose of visceral sound; a spaced-out sonic groove as Stuart pleads ‘I can’t satisfy your love’, to a backdrop of deafening feedback guitar. 

The dreampop of ‘Into A Dream’ glitters 60s-like with guitars that turn into waterfalls of sitar and full on, psych induced vibrations before the mystical and magical ‘Tomorrow’ is a trip into the unknown conjuring up a drug-induced utopia.

The EP closes with ‘Inner Soul’, a hazy, mind-altering trip with Stuart’s vocals immersed under a wall of reverb and fuzzed-up guitars, his vague poetry only adding to the atmosphere of the EP throughout. 

With a support slot lined up with The Jesus and Mary Chain in April plus more live dates and festivals across the UK and Europe throughout 2017, the band’s heavily anticipated debut long player is pencilled in for release later in the year.

Suck it up (radio edit)

Melbourne's Constant Mongrel (featuring members of Terry, Woollen Kits, Taco Leg and Nun) return with a new 7” via Upset The Rhythm in conjunction with their 2019 European tour. ‘Experts in Skin’ is the little sister follow-up to 2018’s ‘Living In Excellence’. The A side single holds the familiar post-post punk angst the band is known for, only building ever higher with a triple saxophone flurry and singer Tom Ridgewell’s mutters on the often awkward nature of mainstream consumerism. On the flip side the band turns to its pop sensibilities producing the tough but sweet sounding ‘Schnuki’. Bassist Amy Hill’s bouncing vocals contrast to the anarcho-punk growls below. Subject matter being another complaint about people that are really fake nice. Can I help you darling? Honey? Sweetie? Deary? Pumpkin?...... no thanks. Constant Mongrel have previous releases available on RIP Society, La Vida Es Un Mus and Siltbreeze.

Straight from headlining Bad Vibrations festival in June, The Laurels have re-emerged from the studio with another taster from their upcoming third album. Sound System, their first release since welcoming multi-instrumentalist Kat Harley to the band, showcases her hard-hitting bass and celestial vocals as they punch through a maze of Blade Runner-meets-Bowie synths and sizzling guitars in the eye of an electro grunge storm. High rise apartments and rent prices loom large over this paean to a future dystopian city, the inhabitants of which are doomed to a lifetime of evenings spent in queues waiting to eat at fine dining restaurants after a round of putt putt golf. Sound System finds this group of part-time disc jockeys loading up their van with generators and loudspeakers as they seek to reignite the street party. Catch their sound system in super high fidelity to celebrate the release with a small run of shows before they jump back into the studio to finish the album. Launching at the Lansdowne Hotel on July 20th and the Gasometer on July 27th.

Peel Dream Magazine is the musical vehicle for NYC's Joe Stevens, who launched the band in 2018 with the critically acclaimed album "Modern Meta Physic." With it Stevens created a mysterious, liminal tribute to the hazy end of ‘90s dream-pop – a masterful mix of first-class songwriting precision and train-window sonic impressionism that duly found its place on numerous "Best of 2018" lists.

After 18 months of writing and live shows with a shifting cast of band members, Peel Dream are back with "Agitprop Alterna," an album that pushes the group's dreamy, motorik-heavy sound to a deeply melodic and beautifully discordant place. The album pays homage to a strain of mod-ish U.K. pop that spans early My Bloody Valentine and Talulah Gosh, up through early Stereolab, Belle & Sebastian, and even Broadcast. It's also indebted to stateside pop bands that were cut from a similar cloth -- Rocketship, Lilys, Yo La Tengo, and even "Nevermind"-era Nirvana.

Where the creation of "Modern Meta Physic" was a solitary pursuit, "Agitprop Alterna" found Stevens channeling the collaborative spirit of the band's ever-rotating live incarnation in the studio. The album is ultimately defined by the tension of difference: between itself and its predecessor; intertwined male-female vocals; the music's languid dreaminess and concrete sonic immediacy.

Deeply rooted in the Brechtian ideas of art as a tool to spur action, "Agitprop Alterna" deepens the connection between the existential and the interpretive first explored on "Modern Meta Physic," giving the listener space to find their own meaning in shimmering guitars, fuzzed-out synths, and buzzing organ drones. It is a rejection of manipulation in all its forms and a buzzsaw against complacency – soft-focus pop whose clear-cut message is that you get to decide the message. It's a rare trick to agitate without being obvious: perhaps that makes "Agitprop Alterna" the most Peel Dream Magazine-like statement yet.
