Her mix is the perfectly melted, alchemy of the elements of past and present, with filthy amens, deadly steppers, driving rollers, upfront tracks, half-time blazers, and moody junle bits! The range in this is something to behold! Deselecta smashed this one to dust!! 

Let's meet our dj for episode 554, Deselecta:

1. Tell us about any gigs you have coming up: 

At the time of writing this, I will be playing with my Militant Music family this coming Thursday! (4/06/24).  We’ll be in Peckham at The Four Quarters, MM were the first to take me seriously as an artist and are all such passionate lovers of all dance music – I love them a lot ! 

In Essex I will be playing for Untz on the 12th July & Groove Sanctuary on 3rd August. It’s always nice being on home soil as there is now an abundance of new promoters trying to bring the underground to Colchester, which I really appreciate as it is in these spaces that I had some of my first powerful experiences with dance music! Lastly, I have 2 unannounced sets thus far in Bristol & 1 in Sheffield (!!) from September. I can’t put into words how excited I am for these, more details to follow!

 

Tell us about your crew, Bad B!tch Dubz:

I met the BBDubz girls when they were hosting open deck nights at The Crown, in Bristol! At that point I didn’t know that many women or nb people personally that made music, and I wanted to find a space to connect in that way. BBDubz has been instrumental in me feeling as though I can hold my own in a mix, because they are so appreciative and supportive of me, even though we each have a very different and distinct sound. They’re very driven and talented people that have a lot of respect from me, and collectively we’re working hard behind the scenes on our production – which we will soon be sharing so watch out for that on the BadBitchDubz Instagram!

 

What musical instrument has the most annoying sound to you?

Hahaha, I didn’t think I would reach a point where I’d say this, but I find long-winded piano breakdowns quite grating these days, especially in a tune that is otherwise breakbeat heavy. When I first started going to jungle parties, happy hardcore and rave were elements of the event, but not the entirety so I quite actively enjoyed them, since then most of the artists I know are producing and playing a lot of Jungle Techno, so I prefer other styles these days. That being said, I still think Rhodes are beautiful in atmospheric tunes, and they breathe so much life into them – they are essential to the genre.

DJ Storm - Outlook Mix Series 2018

this is the mix, consisting of Moving Shadow releases only, clocking in at 4 (four) hours and is the first mix of three. all tracks featured (except one) are from releases with catalogue numbers before 100 - roughly at that time there was a major change in drum&bass as a whole - it became more cold, nervous, machine-like and I felt emotionally more connected to the more soulful, atmospheric and jazzy stuff being released earlier than that.

as you might have figured out by now, I was - and still am, in a way - an addict of this fine label which managed to release a hell of an amount of most forefront quality drum&bass and jungle of it's time. I was so obsessed I had to get every single vinyl Moving Shadow release. after 250 or so releases, I still am halfway. for me, it was a label with unsurpassed quality/quantity ratio, with an unique sound, the cream of the crops, the icing on a chocolate cake. few other drum&bass labels have ever gotten close to this, most notably the Good Looking empire, Metalheadz.

if anyone should care, it was recorded using two stanton st-90 turntables, a numark dm3001x mixer and two stanton sk520 cartridges, meaning it's an all vinyl mix and recorded in one go.

as I said before, there are two more 4-hour moving shadow only sessions. my ultimate dream would be to re-record and re-master these mixes using digital copies, to ensure the best sound quality which the pieces of music contained definitely deserve. these mixes were intended to be a journey through the soundscape, the snapshot of mid-90s moving shadow world, therefore, my input is merely a vessel for the music.
