Pinkshinyultrablast, a five-piece band from Saint-Petersburg in Russia, are set to release their debut album ‘Everything Else Matters’ on 26th January.

Hailing from a city more synonymous with the State Conservatory rather than a gang of shoegaze addicts, they’ve been compared to Lush. But this is no mere throwback tribute - due to their sharp, icy electronics and ability to subvert the genre, bringing something new to the table. They possess  not only the spirit of late 80s/early 90s British bands like Ride, but also machine-made sounds of the same era from Sabres Of Paradise or Global Communication, not to mention wider vibrations like Cluster, Popul Vuh, Terry Riley and Philip Glass.

Disdain for a stagnant scene can often be a driving force of creativity; the band say of St Petersburg that, “we realised the local indie scene was totally boring and wanted to play something radically different”. That vision has been realised – this is an album brimming with playful melody and finely-crafted songwriting. Imagine the scope of a Caribou record, fronted by Elizabeth Fraser soundtracking a grizzly Raskolnikov crime.

The band take their name from an Astrobrite album, an act who were, according to the band, instrumental in how they “researched spaces between ambient, heavy guitar and pop music” .The spaces are what stand out, the production creates a dream-like affair, while space to breathe and reflect on the beauty of the music is accommodated. There is a sparseness to the album that in turn gives spaciousness, even expansiveness.

The second single ‘Holy Forest’ is released 19th January. The song is indicative of an album full of melodic gems and shimmering shoegaze - euphoric with spectral guitars, its sharp edged pop has a radiant charm.  Welcome to your new favourite Russian band.

Feted for the urgency and unrest of their live presence, London three-piece Fever Dream have now committed their dark and brittle post-punk-shoegaze noise to tape in the form of debut album, Moyamoya, out April 26th from Club AC30.

The first single from Moyamoya, Serotonin Hit is a potent introduction to the sound of this young London band. Building to a steady forward charge, punctuated by stinging guitars yet keeping intact a core connection to melody, Serotonin Hit reaches a liminal communion of transitory mental state, the glow that you get from a sudden rush of distant memories and the fog of images: people and places of the subconscious. 

Comprised of guitarist/vocalist Adey Fleet, bassist Sarah Lippett, and drummer Cat Loye, Fever Dream make music which stalks the unsettled territory between MBV and PiL: suffused with melody and discordance, unhinged. Via the twitching fragility and freneticism of Fleet’s guitar and vocals, Lippett's stormy bass, and the propulsive dark heart that is Loye’s drumming, Fever Dream pitch tumultuous swathes of noise against irresistible pop hooks and gentle febrile tonality, arriving at a sound which sharply articulates a disorientating world of panic attacks, tender allegiances, and sweet perversions.

Drawing from shoegaze, slowcore, and alt-rock - basically any form of music that favours distorted guitars and never really had its “moment” in indie rock post-1995 -- and for that reason, never really went out of style – Fever Dream manages to successfully sound genreless -- despite being referential of half a dozen genres at once -- and a seamless, coherent listening experience that remains in memory long after the last note has faded.

<p>Life seems to happen always at present time. We move on across the years challenged by the next day, living by the hour. Sometimes, we go back to places in our memory that resemble past remembrances, important moments or just the illusion of important moments, spotlight in our mind. Youth is one of such spotlights, it is a milestone on our development as individuals, accumulating experiences, failures and successes.
Looking back at these memories we add phantasy to such moments. Sometimes because they are blurred in our memory and we don’t know exactly how they occurred. Other times we don’t need them to be truthful but more like a mirror to our needs. Delayed Summer is like one of these novels written on the subject of youth past memories.
Coming back to the house where he grew up Romain Barbot felt the urgency of recreating is memories, smells, images, souvenirs of a long gone period. Delayed Summer is born from this impulse, and much like an urge it was automatically pursued in the shape of jam sessions with a couple of friends and minimal resources.
Delayed Summer is trespassed with an energy filtered by years that passed by. Among the instruments, the guitar can be heard more loudly, reflecting the electricity that is youth. Using a couple of webcam microphones to capture this instants a lo-fi characteristic is achieved, that suggests the blurring of memories that exist in Romain Barbot’s mind.

The Fireworks are Matthew Rimell, Beth Arzy, Isabel Albiol, and Shaun Charman, based in London, Croydon, and Brighton, UK.

The Fireworks released two 7" vinyl singles (The Fireworks EP and Runaround) and a flexi-postcard of the Girls At Our Best! classic Getting Nowhere Fast - leading up to the brilliantly received LP and CD "Switch Me On" in 2015, and 10" EP Black and Blue in July 2016. 

Original co-singer Emma Hall moved on after Black and Blue, but the band are delighted to announce her replacement as Beth Arzy (The Luxembourg Signal / Trembling Blue Stars), along with the recording of new songs.   

The band have played around the UK, Germany and Spain, including London, Bristol, Nottingham, Manchester, Southampton, Brighton, Rochester, the Indietracks Festival in Derbyshire, Berlin, Hamburg and the Lemon Pop Festival in Murcia, and received extensive airplay on BBC 6 Music (including Lauren Laverne, Steve Lamacq and Gideon Coe), KEXP (Kevin Cole) and around the world.
