The Assignment: Record the first third of a trio.

I started with a track I'm working on since months and which does not work for me. I threw away all but what was originally some kind of Rhodes basis. I rearranged it until I liked it more than the original fully instrumented version. It's now Dmin with only two 4-bar-progressions to Gm and back. It's 90bpm, 6/4. I see plenty of space for Drums, Leads, Vocals, Noises - have fun, if you like ;-)

A sequenced modular patch using the 2HP Pluck as the only voice and passed through a couple of guitar pedals (Digital Delay, then Digital Reverb).

There are two KORG SQ-1s providing the sequence. One of seven steps and the other of five. The two CVs are XORed and passed to the V/Oct of the Pluck. Meanwhile, the gate from one SQ-1 is combined with the output of a 2HP Euclid, then passed through a Mystic Circuits ANA to create stepped triggers that trigger the Pluck. The resulting pluck is then passed through a VCA, which is modulated by an ADSR being triggered by the 180 bpm clock. During the recording, I vary the release on the ADSR to change the intensity of the 'bongos'.

electro-bongo (disquiet0591)

I tried to think of different styles of music that made me picture actual trios of musicians playing live. I had a short window of time to play the drums this past weekend, so I sat down and just started playing whatever came to mind. I tried playing a jazz beat and also played a more folk/country beat, but ultimately started grooving to this harder, funky rock beat that makes the first part of the song. Part B is just what felt natural when I wanted to create an A-B-A-B pattern and then I just did a variation on Part B for the bridge. So, this short little song framework goes A-B-A-B-C-A. I played it through a handful of times until I was able to get a few good takes. Then I did a little editing, mixing and added some effects. It is a very raw recording and I honestly have no preconceptions about what might be layered over it. This is my first collaborative Junto project and I am excited to take part! Thanks!

Disquiet Junto Project 0592: Better Than One
The Assignment: Record the second third of an asynchronous trio.

Please note: While this is the second part of a three-part project, you can participate in one, two, or all three of the parts, which will occur over the course of three consecutive weeks.

Step 1: This week’s Disquiet Junto project is the second in a sequence intended to encourage and reward asynchronous collaboration. This week you’ll be adding music to a pre-existing track, which you will source from the previous week’s Junto project (disquiet.com/0592 14). Note that you aren’t creating a duet — you’re creating the second third of what will eventually be a trio. Important: Leave space for what is yet to come.

Step 2: The plan is for you to record a short and original piece of music, on any instrumentation of your choice, as a complement to a pre-existing track. First, however, you must select the piece of music to which you will be adding your own music. There are tracks by numerous musicians to choose from. The majority are in this playlist:

Step 3: Record a short piece of music, roughly the length of the piece of music you selected in Step 2. Your track should complement the piece from Step 2, and leave room for an eventual third piece of music. When composing and recording your part, don’t alter the original piece of music at all, except to pan the original fully to the left if it hasn’t been panned left already. In your finished audio track, your new part should be panned fully to the right.
