Semantix - Delinquent [Crave Tapes]

Unhuman & Petra Flurr is the collaborative synthpunk-technoid project of BITE label stalwart, Berlin-based Greek artist Unhuman and legendary queer wave figure Petra Flurr. ‘Mala Vida’ is their debut album on BITE that further evolves their sound beyond genre borders. 

The duo deliver an 8-track LP consisting of punk body music exhibiting the team’s mastery on production, their androgynous vision and diverse influences. Petra Flurr’s staggered, often effected, vocals cruise over pounding beats, bold iconic hooks and psychedelic atmospheres. His lyrics reference the seedy underbelly of Berlin’s sex underground. Meanwhile, Unhuman’s productions broadly range from the post-punk references of ‘Labyrinth’ to the new beat grooves of ‘Short Life’ featuring Ukrainian duo Garden Krist to the melodic orchestrations of ‘Rush’. All this is reinterpreted by techno duo New Frames on a digital remix of ‘Unzivilisiert’.

‘Mala Vida’ is a direct inspiration from their debut performance at Berghain for last year’s BITE label night. After which, they swiftly retreated to the studio to compose, still in their platform heels. The two paint a coat of neon red over their preexisting batcave of sound. While the artwork by Liam Noonan compliments the gender fluidness of the album, distorting and digitally manipulating images of the creators themselves. Using heavy rhythmics, wavy mandates, an androgynous stare and unavoidable sexuality, Unhuman & Petra Flurr introduce us to their culled brand of queer death techno. Always with a wink.

PREMIERE: L.F.T. - Panzer Tanz (The Hacker Remix) [MNQ 154]

The Brvtalist is pleased to premiere a new track from Andi + Machino. They joined forces and crafted off-the-cuff, dangerously degenerate darkly-driven dance tracks that conflates the tension of running EBM basslines with the monstrosity of electro-saturated, industrialized beats. 

'Parafernales', the debut release by the duo on Mannequin, is a conceptual EP that delves into the intricate dynamics of power struggles. Released this summer, the EP explores themes of love, lust, strength, destruction, dominance, and submission. Andi's vocals combine spoken word, whispers, and intense screams, capturing the manic experience of simultaneously possessing and losing control. The EP title, Parafernales, is a nod to Machino's first language of Spanish and stems from the idea of miscellany: it is parafernalia for drugs, or, simply, accessories for unsavory activities. With inspirations from turn-of-the-90s erotic thrillers to the Chilean post-punk band, Los Prisoneros, the duo collide in a manner that is unadulterated and, at times, completely unhinged.

Secret Feelings closes out a strong spring season with a new single from label boss JFR. Hailing from Argentina but currently calling Spain home, Juan Franco Rivero aka JFR has carved out a unique sonic identity in the world of progressive and organic house, resulting in a string of uniquely crafted records that present a resonant worldly sound. Enjoying a steady rise since emerging 2017, it was 2021 which proved to be a breakout year for JFR, as the Argentine continued his upward trajectory with a standout release for UK behemoth Anjunadeep; a project which would lead to offerings via Clubsonica and Musique de Lune across the next calendar year, and in turn garnering support from Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren and Sebastian Leger. 2023 would also bring newfound success for JFR, launching his Secret Feelings imprint in September with 'Anatonic', before ending the year with the critically acclaimed five-track showcase '21 Angels'. With four successful single's to begin 2024, the most recent of which was May's 'Kain', the Barcelona resident continues to build his Secret Feeling imprint with a new single entitled 'Bichu', alongside remixes from Scippo and Saintbull.

Beginning with the Original Mix, JFR finds a perfect balance between dancefloor energy and arcane musicality. Full of quirky melodic qualities, the Barcelona resident expertly blends plush kick drums, warm rolling grooves and cascading synth phrases, all perfectly bound together with tight compact drum arrangements. Further revealing his keen sense of dancefloor dynamics across the break, JFR expands the narrative amidst waves of colour and texture; all blanketed with dramatic overlays, before a classy drop cues a wave of noise and soaring finale, complete with key-changing grooves and tension filled tones.

Making his label debut and providing the first remix of 'Bichu' is Scippo. The Argentina born, Spain based artist arrives on the label following an EP for Canada's Strange Town Recordings to begin the year. The Flown Records boss always seems to craft something unique in all his remixes, and that holds true here as he strips the majority of atmosphere away and dubs down the melodies into rhythmic co-actions for a contemporary dancefloor romp. 

Also making his label debut with the second and final interpretation of 'Bichu' is Saintbull. The Spanish artist and Perfect Balance label boss brings further diversity to the project with a melodic house and techno slant on the track, one which is very much sitting within the genre's trends at the moment. Saintbull stays quite true to the melodic themes from the original here, but with a tougher more compact framework, crunchy rhythm section and a healthy dose of astral aesthetics, this should not only fair well on the dancefloor, but closes the release out on a tougher note. Highly recommended.
