Our first premiere of the week is a double header from the Rebel county, as two of Ireland’s most promising techno act’s team up for a cracking release in aid of Pieta House. We premiere David O’Neils, impressive broken spin on FYuN’s, ‘Untitled’ track.

2021 has seen numerous collaborations between Irish artists, this time FYuN, David O’Neil & Offtrack step up for a great cause as they serve up some great techno.

FYuN has organised an EP for charity that consists of an original entitled ‘Untitled’ and two remixes from Dave O’Neil and Offtrack. The trio of producers, went deep and created an intricate EP ranging through different styles of techno.

This EP was put together in order to raise funds for Pieta House. Pieta house is a nonprofit organisation who relies on the public for 80% of their funding. They offer free services to those with suicidal ideation, those engaging in self-harm and those bereaved by suicide.

The EP consists of an original track with a driving and powerful nature by FYuN and is accompanied by two broken drum style remixes by Offtrack and Dave O’Neill. 

David O’Neils remix is a menacing broken beat interpretation of the original, encompassing pounding kick drums, hypnotic bleeps, brisk percussion and atmospheric soundscapes. The track is reminiscent of Bas Mooy, Charlton, DJ Boss & other artists that feature heavily on Mord. This is quality!

Four Four Premiere: FYUN - Untitled [Dave O'Neill Remix]

Our first premiere of the week is a match made in heaven as Serbian techno connoisseur Lag teams up with Jerome Hill’s imprint, Don’t for a powerful 4 track EP. We premiere the track ‘Frka Frka’ a sub trembling club tool, this one is absolutely off the charts.

Serbian techno master Lag has been a favourite of mine for a very long time and his music has been a staple in my DJ sets for quite some time. The esteemed techno producer and DJ boasts a distinct sound that is characterised to be rhythmic, bassy, playful and groovy.

The broken techno boss has featured on acclaimed labels such as Mord, Elements, Upperberry, THEM & more. Lag’s distinctive sound has made him a favourite for DJ’s over the years.

The Serbian native also boasts a very reputable DJ career with podcasts on Hate, Slam Radio, DJ Mag and more. The skilled DJ can easily rock 4 decks with no compromise and all the thrills.

‘Frka Frka’ is a beautiful merger between forward thinking techno and old school nuances. Lag blends classic stab sounds with rolling bass lines, rhythmic drum patterns and classic lag vocal hits. Towering synth lines fly through the mix in the later part of the track, followed by menacing white. The whole track screams extravagant, it’s big and bold while remaining chic and dynamic.

I tested this out in Index last weekend and it tore the place the apart. This track is made for the club and it’s a monster on a system.

Since being made aware of @Catartsis and Ōtone's @ygam imprint a few years back, we've been dipping into their catalogue every time we've felt the desire to listen to intelligent techno and experimental music. After something of a hiatus over the pandemic, the label is back in business, with Catartsis helming a solo EP entitled 'Acier Leste'.

Two years since their first compilation, Herrensauna returns with a double 12-inch V/A showcasing eight crucial artists from the global underground.
For their second release, the Berlin-based label and queer collective look to the forefront of experimentalism in electronic music, connecting the dots between producers of varying backgrounds to provide an aesthetic statement of intent.
Driving percussion, drilling offbeats, and eerie soundscapes paint an intense picture of Herrensauna’s own events - for which they regularly collaborate with other collectives - whilst also looking outward for inspiration.
A droning, distortion-soaked new track by Kenyan Nyege Nyege resident Slikback sits alongside a maximalist electro remix of Georgian resident Salome by DJ Stingray 313, whilst Colombian producer Verraco offers up a euphoric, percussive rework of Merino and Greece’s DJ Loser + Malafama offer up a syncopated, multi-genre new cut for the peak hours.
By prioritising freedom of expression, the compilation serves as an inspiring example of collaboration beyond genre restraints, and a documentation of some of the most innovative producers of the moment.
