Reading for leisure is definitely something I've worked towards. I read so much all throughout my childhood because my mom was adamant about reading a book, but I think part of why I fell of was because I either read for escapism or because it was assigned (especially in college).

I mean...if Joe Budden can have a whole podcast, then why not Azealia Banks. 🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️ skskskssksk but I agree with Dustin, get in the booth. I still rock with Broke With Expensive Taste.

Fran! Reiterating that A Little Life is an absolutely brutal read. All of the trigger warnings. Don’t know if that’s a thing you like to know about books but if you do, this one has ALL the triggers. 

Also, I’m the managing editor of a book media site, and I was so pleased to have a beautifully Black-centered booktok feed! Booktok is still overwhelmingly white and really suppresses creators of color.  PLENTY of them exist, obviously. It’s that TikTok doesn’t elevate them or titles by BIPOC authors like it does white ones

Dustin's rant about the smelly football player reminds me of this author that I'm currently reading. Marion Chesney wrires Bridgerton like stories except she goes in depth about the hygienic practices of the time. I haven't been able to confirm this, but she says people would carry a "lice box".  It would be a small silver tin box & whenever the wealthy were out in public & noticed lice on themselves, they would simply pluck it off & put it in the tin box to dispose of later. Filthiness is their heritage. 🤢

Fran, Assanté, and Dustin, yall have done it again. What a touching and hilarious episode. I want to thank Deacon Dustin Ross for being so courageous in recording the show and being vulnerable after the loss of another loved one. The way you all spoke of Nef and what a positive impact on everyone she interacted with truly warmed my heart. Hearing you all speak of Nef made me think of my older sister who recently passed away.  In November 2023, my sister 39-year-old sister passed from stage 4 colorectal cancer after she fought for more than 6 years. She went through countless rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, and experimental drugs, and never complained once. Much like Nef, my sister was so selfless that she was sending FB messages to people checking up on them up until the last few weeks of her life. In 2020 she began to lose her long always silk pressed hair and instead of having her feel alone, I cut off my locs that I had been growing for 13 years (pt1)

When I lost my sister last November, I thought the pain I felt would never go away and I know it won’t. However, I am working towards accepting this pain as something that I can do my best to manage and not let the grief overpower me. What I love about this episode is that instead of being “stuck” in the stages of anger or depression, Dustin seems to be processing his emotions by reflecting on the beautiful moments he shared with Nef and using comedic relief to honor her memory in such a delicate way. Much like he does when he speaks of Frank. What beautiful ways to not only keep the memory of beautiful people alive, but also working through the pain of them not being there in a productive way. I hope my sister and Nef are resting pain free. I know my sis will be with me taking my licensing exam next month and Nef will be in the audience cheering Dustin on at his upcoming TED Talk and I love that for us. Thank you all! Congrats Fran for getting the confidence to drive. i feel like the friend zone and the universe is pushing all the native NYC girlies to drive, including me. Its so crazy  ive been saying i have to drive b4 i have a kid and look at me with kid and Ubering with my 6 month old. a few weeks ago when you all mentioned Dymond Auto Club i took it as a sign and signed up. they are right upstairs from my child hood hair salon where i used to get my big bang bumped with drop curls. so nostalgic!  another sign was last week Cardi B started taking driving lessons!
