Welcome to the Word Is Love Soul & Funk Show where this time we will be looking at the music of Soul Train. 

In the mix we will explore tracks by Chic, James Brown and Larry Levan plus a number of artists who appeared on the Soul Train.

Expect funky beats and bass lines with a myriad of soulful vocals, sultry saxaphones, sexy flutes, sleazy synths and tight percussion.

Soul Train was an American music variety television show, the first to prominently feature African American musical acts and dancers. Broadcast nationally from 1971 to 2006, it was one of the longest-running syndicated programs in American television history.

Soul Train was the brainchild of Chicago radio announcer Don Cornelius. It initially aired in 1970 on Chicago television station WCIU-TV. The show was produced in hour-long segments five afternoons a week and became a local television hit. It duplicated the environment of a dance club and featured a variety of noted musical performers as well as both professional and amateur dancers.

Soon Soul Train drew the interest of George Johnson, founder and president of Johnson Products Company (a black-owned hair-product manufacturer), whose support enabled the program to move into national syndication in 1971. The success of Soul Train reflected the rise and popularity of soul music and funk artists on recordings and radio programs.

By presenting an image of black culture as upbeat, exciting, and vibrant, Soul Train attracted many viewers of other ethnicities and contributed to the growing prestige of African Americans and black culture in mainstream America. Cornelius maintained control of the Soul Train brand until his death and produced several successful annual specials, including the ongoing Soul Train Music Awards.

This mix explores the sound of Soul Train throughout the 70's and 80's.

Welcome to the 'Sampled By' Daft Punk mix.

This mix explores the influences of Daft Punk using funky music from the 70's, 80's, 90's and 00's that influenced their biggest hit's.

For those who don't already know, Daft Punk are a French electronic music duo formed in Paris in 1993 by Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter.

Their popularity grew in the late 1990's as part of the French house movement, combining elements of house music with funk, techno, disco, rock, and synthpop.

They wear fancy helmets and gloves to assume robot personas.

This is a fan created mix with fan created artwork to celebrate the genius of Daft Punk and is free for everyone to listen to and enjoy.

"Larry Levan was the first superstar DJ. The first to really convince the world that there was more to DJing than just playing one record after another. For 10 years from 1977 to 1987, Levan was the star attraction at New York’s legendary Paradise Garage, writing himself into clubbing lore with swashbuckling DJ sets that took in minimal underground disco, funky rock, dub and synth-pop, which foreshadowed the house music revolution. At the same time, his uncanny ability to mix and tweak records for maximum emotional impact would regularly send his devoted congregation into raptures."

'"People were tired of being serious," one regular to Studio 54 reflects in a landmark new documentary of the same name about the infamous NYC disco nightclub. The epicentre of ’70s hedonism in the post-Watergate era, it was a magnet for beautiful stars, casual sex, and mounds of cocaine. A den of excess that defined its own rules and enshrined the ostracised, queer, and fabulous.

Studio 54 was a place where people could rub shoulders (and probably more) with the rich and famous, the club's ethos being that money didn't matter but personality, outlook, style and - above all - enthusiasm for life did.  Andy Warhol, Liza Minnelli, Elizabeth Taylor, Debbie Harry, Grace Jones, Michael Jackson, Calvin Klein, Elton John, Rick James, Truman Capote, Freddie Mercury, Ric Flair, Lou Reed, Al Pacino, Cher, David Bowie, Salvador Dalí, Robin Williams and Jackie Kennedy Onassis were all regulars, and that doesn't even put a dent in the list.'

In this show we go to France with the Disco wonder that is Dimitri From Paris.

Containing Dimitri's Reworked tracks by Sister Sledge, Chic, Loleatta Holloway and Inner Life to name but a few plus a bunch of his choice edits you may have not heard before.

Here is an article by Resident Advisor that describes the man perfectly:

"Because of what he describes as a lack of dance remixers in France, his career in radio led to his being asked to rework tracks for various artists, among them Björk, New Order, and the Brand New Heavies. Along the way he was hired by chic fashion designers like Chanel, Gaultier, and Lagerfeld to put together soundtracks for runway shows and boutiques.

'What happened was that I started DJing and then there were more and more tools -- technical tools -- available to us DJs that would allow us to make more creative things and eventually to make our own music without actually knowing how to play a particular instrument. With the advent of samplers and other machines at a budget that made them accessible in the mid '80s, we started making our own tracks. I was also learning the process of how a track is constructed by doing remixes for people. Finally, I was able to produce my own tracks.'"

Dimitri From Paris The Word Is Love Show 12 Funky Disco House Soul Funk Rare Groove R&B Dance

In this very special Masters At Work show we cover a number of their classic remixed tracks from their back catalogue.

"Kenny 'Dope' Gonzales and 'Little' Louie Vega changed the blueprint of house music forever. 

It takes a decent sized set of balls to call yourselves Masters at Work. We've not seen them in their boxers or anything, but based on their musical output over the last 25 years or so, it's safe to hazard a guess that Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez and "Little" Louie Vega are packing something more akin to grapefruits than nectarines down there.

It takes even bigger balls to take the name off Todd Terry, but that's what they did. Todd went on to have an incredible career under his own name and Gonzalez and Vega put the hours in and produced the goods. Listening to their expansive, extensive back catalogue is like walking through the Natural History Museum of house. You see entire genres, entire scenes germinating, growing, and flourishing. MAW are house music and house music is the sound of Masters at Work.

From "Deep Inside" to "The Ha Track" to "Lean on Me", Masters at Work have more bangers in the trunk than most. Who else has remixed Madonna, Michael Jackson and Mel B? "

In this show we celebrate the Genius of Disco & Funk remixing legend Joey Negro and his collective The Sunburst Band.

Containing Reworked tracks by Hot Toddy, Diane Charlemagne, Angela Johnson and Matt Bianco plus several classic remixed tracks that you may recognise. There's also further reworks by Dr Packer and Horsemeat Disco too, it's a jam packed show.

"Joey Negro has been producing with love for close to three decades. Arguably house music’s major proponent of soulful, disco-tinged, vocal records and without question instrumental in its development and popularisation, no-one treats a loop, groove or hook with as much care and attention as Joey Negro.

 

Joey Negro is the most well-known pseudonym of master British DJ, producer and remixer Dave Lee. Under a plethora of other monikers including Akabu, Doug Willis, The Sunburst Band, Sessomatto, and Z Factor, Dave was one of the first artists to incorporate disco samples in house music when he began his production career in 1988. Indeed, he was in the studio making credible and outstanding British house music when many luminaries around him were still busy getting to grips with their decks. Little has changed since then and Dave is still widely regarded as one of the most credible and in-demand artists on the global scene."

The mix showcases the talent of the man plus he has a huge back catalogue that I intend to work through and deliver to you in shows from now into the future.

Joey Negro & The Sunburst Band The Word Is Love Show 16 Funky Disco House Soul Funk Groove Dance

We are back at New York's Studio 54 where we go on a further journey through 70's New York Disco.

Covering Disco, Funk, Rare Groove and Soul, there's a number of tracks that you may recognise, this is one Guilty Pleasure of a Studio 54 classics party mix. 

Expect classic tracks by The Bee Gee's, Donna Summer, Stevie Wonder, George McCrae, The Pointer Sister's, Kool & The Gang, Hot Chocolate and The Commodores. 

I forgot to mention, there's some classic Earth, Wind & Fire tracks are on there too, plus a bunch of tracks you may have never heard before that were played down at the infamous club.

The mix has been put together with a 'Shooting from The Hip' style of cut mixing and blend mixing to give it that authentic New York Loft Party feel.
