Die unbekannte Schöne 

In aller Seelenruhe lasse ich mich durch den Club treiben. Ziellos verweile ich hier, dann mal dort. Um mich voll und ganz auf die Stimmung einlassen zu können, schließe ich meine Augen. Ich verschmelze mit der Menschenmenge um mich herum und wir fusionieren zu einer einzigen, feiernden Masse. Während wir so dahin wogen registriere ich eine Anomalie. Irgendjemand- oder etwas holt mich aus der Masse heraus, zurück zum Dasein eines Individuums. Ich fühle mich von dieser Präsenz wie magisch angezogen und gehe dem Impuls nach. Dann sehe ich sie. Langsam aber sicher führt mich mein Weg durch die Menge zu ihr. Wir tanzen mit- und nebeneinander, wortlos. Jedes Mal wenn sich unsere Hände berühren, steht die Zeit für einen kurzen Augenblick still. Ich habe sie noch nie zuvor gesehen, doch sie kommt mir so bekannt und vertraut vor. Trotz dieser vielversprechenden Umstände spreche ich sie nicht an. Ich genieße einfach nur ihre Gegenwart, ihr schönes Erscheinungsbild und meine Gedankenwelt. Irgendwann endet der Moment und sie verschwindet in der Menge. Ein wenig enttäuscht über die ausgebliebene verbale Kommunikation, suche ich meine Freunde. 
Ich würde schon gern wissen wer sie ist … Werden die unbekannte Schöne und ich uns irgendwann Wiedersehen?

Julya Karma ist heute auf KataHaifisch zu Gast. Aktuell lebt sie ihren Traum in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika, genauer gesagt in New York City. Von dort aus tourt sie als DJ durch die Welt, produziert eigene Musik und genießt die Freuden des Lebens. Bereits im Alter von 6 Jahren begann Julya Karma mit dem Klavierspiel. Seitdem begleitet sie die Musik und das musizieren durch alle Etappen ihrer Biografie. In ihren Eigenproduktionen erzählt sie Geschichten über das Leben und über das Geschenk des Seins. Dabei kombiniert sie Elemente aus den unterschiedlichsten Subgenres und kreiert ihren individuellen, doch universal verständlichen Sound. 
Nun viel Spaß mit dem neuen Set von Julya Karma, welches das Beste aus alt und neu miteinander vereint.

I've always been a huge fan of longer set times as it enables me to fully tell my stories without any boundaries, which is why the concept of Flow Sessions deeply resonated with me early on. I deep dived in my library for days and after everything was set, I've just let it flow in my studio for 3 hours 33 minutes and 33 seconds, fluently grooving to higher BPMs, playing some of the most beautiful tracks I've collected over the years. Some hidden gems, some long forgotten beauties, a few new unreleased tracks of mine... I hope you flow as much as I did while recording this and it makes the upcoming autumn and winter months a little more bearable to you if you're based in the northern hemispheres. If you're to be found in the southern hemispheres I hope it makes you smile to the sun and appreciate life and music to the fullest. Isn't music such a beautiful thing?!

Flow Sessions 087 - Fabian Krooss

In May last year I was invited as one of the acts alongside my friends Chambord and Made in TLV to the Xamanic Journey in Basilicata, Italy, where I was asked to lead the ‘Friday Night Boogie Extravaganza’ in the stunning Castello di San Basilio. This was an absolutely unforgettable weekend with music, friendship, Italian food and - of course - mezcal!

I wanted to wait to share this set, mainly because I had been given some unreleased gems I couldn’t post online yet but also because I felt like the set ended up way more eclectic than what I normally play. It was the first night of the weekend, after a long dinner in the castle followed by the acoustic performance of Slim & The Beast. When the band finished playing, around midnight, the guests - who had come from all over the world - were more than ready rave but we also had to close at 3 am. For this reason, there wasn’t time to do a long build up and instead I went straight into an eclectic mix of all my favourite old and new dance tunes.

Normally, podcasts are easy to do and being motivated, one goes to work in exciting anticipation to let the latest delicacies and accumulated "podcast records" shine.
At 3hrs 33min though, the situation is different. We rummaged deep in the record crate, full of enthusiasm knowing exactly what was being played. Dissatisfied with the result and a musical existential crisis not far away, we reflected and rethought the essence of our music: who are we and what do we want anyway? With detective acumen, we conducted acquisitions for weeks and dove into old and new realms in search of the undefinable. Back to the roots...

3 QUESTIONS to ELIF:
Q: What a huge storyteller. Guess you could have mixed 300+ tracks. So why did you choose these tracks now and what did they mean to you once and still mean to you today? 

A: Thank youuu! I have been a fan of this brilliant podcast series for some time and it's a huge honor to be invited. So, yes, it was a big process to record this mix, a very special one for me, especially to decide on which tracks I wanted to include in it. And the thought process behind it. I think I can say that I have never put so much thought in another mix I have recorded. The story of How I Met The Bass definitely received very special attention from me. I tried to include as many influences as I could, but like you said, I could easily make a 10 hour mix. The elimination process happened with the flow of the story, and obviously I had to leave out so many other amazing tracks that shaped my musical understanding today. But these are still a good representation of my musical influence and I am happy with the journey I created. 

Q: How would you describe your own musical development since you first got in touch with Electronic Music? 

A: It is very similar to me, how I am as a person, I would say. Changing and evolving all the time, while keeping the very core of it untouched. A little bit like having that something special that hits the spot in common in so many different forms.

Q: What projects are you currently working on and what can we expect from you soon? 

A: I am obsessively and enthusiastically working on my new label: Marginalia. I am excited to create a platform to support, nurture and develop the incredible output of the producers whose music I have been playing all over the world over the past years. The concept of Marginalia itself dates back to the 11th Century and references the wildly inventive notes, markings, doodles and sketches made in the margins of medieval books and scriptures — a place where the human imagination was free to run wild. To translate this age-old creative even witty tradition into a twenty-first century paradigm, I am looking forward to hopefully and humbly giving back to the incredible pool of artists I admire and think deserve more recognition. The first release should come around September. Non-stop touring and creating a passion project at the same time is already taking lots of my time, yet I try to also produce whenever I have the time & inspiration. So we can expect lots of fresh music!

Fabian has been very close to us since he entered our office to help us as an intern in The Gardens of Babylon a couple of years ago. Now in Berlin to pursue his music career, Fabian keeps surprising us with his outstanding and unique productions.

We've been watching this young artist develop and grow and it's more than an honor for us to call this man a friend and share life stories with him. We miss you Fabian and we hope to see your pretty smile soon again.

 Wie würdest du deinen Stil beschreiben und wen möchstest du damit erreichen?

Verspielt, frech, groovy, minimalistisch und melodisch wären so Adjektive die mir da in den Sinn kommen. Welchem Genre ich mich zuordnen würde - keine Ahnung. Mein Ziel ist es immer gewesen meinen eigenen Stil zu entwickeln, eine eigene Handschrift sozusagen. Meine Musik setzt sich aus vielen, unterschiedlichen Einflüssen zusammen. Von einschneidenden Erlebnissen in Berliner Clubs oder Festivals bis hin zu Produzenten wie Midas 104, O/Y, Roy Rosenfeld oder Frivolous, die mich immer wieder aufs Neue inspirieren. Aus all diesen Einflüssen koche ich dann mein eigenes Süppchen. 
Wen ich mit meiner Musik erreichen möchte? Jeden der die Sprache meiner Musik versteht. Für mich ist Musik etwas Einzigartiges. Manche Tracks haben eine ganz besondere Wirkung auf mich und lösen unglaublich schöne Emotionen in mir aus. Letztendlich möchte ich mit meiner Musik genau das Gleiche bei Anderen erreichen. Ich möchte Menschen überraschen, berühren aber gleichzeitig auch ein bisschen verwirren und überfordern. Mit persönlich fehlt das alles nämlich ein bisschen beim Feiern. Mir fehlt häufig die Emotion und Einzigartigkeit in der Musik. Letztendlich ist das auch Geschmacksache, aber ich denke ein bisschen verrücktere happy Musik tut uns allen gut.

Du bist ja in den letzten 1-2 Jahren überaus aktiv gewesen, was eigenes Produzieren und den Partykosmos angeht. Magst du uns ein bisschen was über deinen Werdegang erzählen?

Ja das kann man so sagen. Vor allem war ich sehr aktiv im Studio. Ich habe im Frühjahr 2019 mein Studium abgeschlossen und mich daraufhin eigentlich voll und ganz der Musik gewidmet. Aber auch in den Jahren zuvor war die Musik immer mein Anker und meine Leidenschaft. 
Im August 2018 hatte ich mein Debutrelease auf Dantze, 2019 habe ich dann genutzt um meine Musik weiterzuentwickeln und somit sehr viel Zeit im Studio verbracht. 2020 erblickt nun endlich mehr Musik von mir das Licht der Welt. Im März habe ich 'Insomniac' auf Serafin Audio Imprint released, vor zwei Tagen erschien dann eine EP mit zwei Titeln von mir auf Weirdos Records und Ende Juli und im August folgen noch zwei Nummern auf Einmusika Recordings und Stil vor Talent. Darauf freue ich mich sehr! Es ist ein sehr schönes Gefühl wenn die eigene Musik ein Zuhause findet. 

Kannst du uns noch etwas über diesen Podcast erzählen?

Viele Menschen verbinden mit einer Afterhour entweder harten Techno oder Downtempo. Ich kann mich auf einer Afterhour durchaus auch an solcher Musik erfreuen, am meisten holt mich jedoch flotte, minimalistische, verspielte und abwechslungsreiche Musik ab.
Wenn ich an Afterhour denke, hab ich den Kater Kiosk vor Augen. Ein Gläschen Sekt auf Eis in der einen Hand, mit der anderen hält man sich an den Seilen fest, denn die Beine können eigentlich nicht mehr. Das Einzige was einen noch bei Laune hält ist die Musik. Für eine gelungene Afterhour gehört natürlich noch weit mehr dazu als nur gute Musik, aber spätestens wenn die Kräfte langsam schwinden, steht und fällt eine Party für mich mit der Musik. Denn am Ende ist Musik die beste Droge. 
So gesehen ist dieses Set ein gesunder Mischkonsum aus einzigartigen Produktionen, genau die richtige Mischung um bei Laune zu bleiben und zu tanzen bis das Licht angeht.

It’s this belief in freedom that drives his work as an artist, unafraid to experiment and craft a profoundly personal sound in the process. A juxtaposition often sits at the heart of his tracks, as Fabian sprinkles lush or mischievous melodies over springy, sometimes elastic and other times static rhythms, nodding to organic and minimal house at once. It’s Fabian’s deep-rooted feeling for sound that fuse these disparate motifs into an irresistible whole as his productions unfold and flourish with intricate details and surprising touches, always united under a tight groove.

All of these addictive attributes are equally omnipresent when Fabian helms the booth – with a nonchalance rooted in pure joy that’s perceivable in an instant. Here, again, he intrinsically becomes the storyteller, weaving an authentic narrative while turning the room upside down. Whether that’s with a sunny selection at Sisyphos Strand, peak-time power at Bucht der Träumer, Wilde Möhre or Feel Festival or a dubbed-out affair for Afterhour Sounds. While by no means a recent presence in Berlin with past gigs at favourites like Kater Blau, Sisyphos, or Ritter Butzke, the last years took Fabian further afield to festivals like The Monastery, Bucht der Träumer, Feel, scene highlight ADE or shows around the world in Oaxaca, Tulum, Zanzibar, New York, Miami, Washington, Seattle, Istanbul, Amsterdam and many more.
