As a devout atheist from my early years I have consequently chosen not to believe in anything that doesn’t have a justifiable or logical explanation. The concept of luck certainly comes into that category as it seems to suggest an exterior force as it’s cause, something I simply cannot accept.

But even non-believers talk about luck being either for or against them, throwing spilled salt over their shoulders or not walking under ladders, because these have become part of everyday behaviour or  language, dictated by habit more than any sense of logic.  The terms in this song all relate to some mysterious good or bad vibe, including - and I’ve known people who actually do this - which direction in which your bed might face when you’re asleep.

Although also a devout atheist, my brother Gal is a good example of such habits, often using the term “Touch Wood” if he wants something to happen in his or our favour.  I think he inherited this from our Mum, who used to say it all the time and would go as far as trying to touch something made of wood to complete the ‘spell', not always easy in what had become an increasingly plastic age.

Despite all of the above, I think Gal must have been ‘Touching Wood’ when he first formed a friendship with Hans, because I’m still not at all sure that we deserve to be associated with someone of such proficiency, consummate talent and innate kindness.  Some may say we have been very lucky.  We have certainly been exceedingly fortunate, which is just about as far as I’m prepared to go.  Whatever your beliefs, we hope you enjoy the song. For strings, flute, bass flute, piano, cloud chamber blowls, percussion, field recordings from the Waitomo Caves and other virtual instruments.
The limestone caves at Waitomo in New Zealand are a series of long passage tunnels eroded by water across aeons. The ‘Voice of The Spirit’ Cave is driven by the infrasonic pulsing of a distant subterranean river system which produces the deep vibrating voice at the cave entrance and creates nodes of vibrations within the large cave called the Cathedral. The Waitomo Caves, with it's mysterious stalactites and stalagmites, are renowned for their glowworms that light up the cave ceilings.  Glow worms are fascinating creatures, they only live up to 2 weeks after coming out their cocoons and are eventually devoured by their young.

My children seek blankets or cuddly toys to comfort them. When I seek comfort/familiarity or reassurance, music offers me warmth, either listening to, or recording.

Even a short perusal of Debra Buesking's profile will convince one of how good a pianist she is.  She also thinks musically which makes her arrangements original and a treat to listen to.  She is also very good at turning lemons into lemonade;) This song is exhibit A, which began its life  as a request for a vocal accompaniment.  The vocalist rejected it thinking it needed more fire.  Being a bit of a tightwad about writing off the considerable time spent on it, I felt it could be repurposed as an instrumental built largely on the strength of Debbie's inventive playing; variations on a theme of sorts.
