If you've been listening to Hip-Hop for a while now, you'll come across some common tropes. Beyond the fashion trends and throwback rhymes, is seems like some of the best acts in the genre rely on the dynamic between deejay and emcee. From DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, Eric B. and Rakim, Gang Starr and of course, Rahzel & DJ JS-1, these duos have forged a bond that makes the music that much better, but yet they also understand the roles that they each provide. While we often hear of the rapper's exploits, it's a breath of fresh air to hear some rhymes that give the man behind the wheels some credit. For the neck snapping collision of horns and drum work found on "Sample Abusers," you can expect some fire from DJ JS-1, a man who's got the gusto to open up the beat to a hilarious sample from Season 6, of Curb Your Enthusiasm. With a trio of verbal assassins -- AG, Sadat X and Neek the Exotic, who all take us on a trip down memory lane on their experiences with some of their favorite producers, the track comes across as a genuine anthem for those cats who are scheming for that big break. If you're in desperate need of some good ol' fashioned Boom bap to get you though the week, look no further than the Queens Hip-Hop fanatic, DJ JS-1 and his recently released producer LP, 'It Is What It Isn't,' which is available on CD through Fat Beats or UGHH, and can be purchased for download through all major digital retailers.

Iranian/British-blooded, Italian-born, and raised across the Middle East, Europe and Africa before moving to Los Angeles, Malkovich raps over African, Caribbean, Brazilian, Indian and Cape Verdean world music classics from Alice Coltrane, Shaan, Serge Gainsbourg, Rob, Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De Contonou Dahomey, Mulatu Astatqe, Augustus Pablo, Tim Maia, and Orquesta Joe Cain, as well as two compositions from L.A. producer Computer Jay. Omni, Sum, Chris Clarke and Ali Baba Abnormal also guest on the mixtape, which Malkovich wrote during his travels through the Dominican Republic, Belize and Jamaica.

Just in time for Halloween, the Hieroglyphics crew is back with a new jawn titled “Heebie Jeebies.” The Gully Duckets-produced track finds the eight-man crew rapping over some menacing production with a slight trap feel to it. This track is one of two jawns that came out of the entire crew being together in the studio in YEARS. This week has been busy for the crew already, as member Pep Love released his Dolla Daily EP on Tuesday.

About The Album:
Kenn Starr sees his career at square one, despite being regarded among the elite of the DMV scene, and being in the inner circle of producers Oddisee and Kev Brown, and having his newest album signed to Mello Music Group. Eight years since his debut, Starr Status, Kenn Starr is baggage free on his sophomore album, Square One.

Largely produced by Kev Brown with a nice block of production by Black Milk, and additional work by 14KT, Roddy Rod, and Kaimbr, Square One is Kenn Starr getting back to his foundation to begin anew. The laid back flow remains intact—complementary to the Kev Brown’s vintage soul-crate production—but the perspective is written with a wisdom earned through seeing opportunities that overpassed his doorstep. On “Cigarettes & Whiskey“ he addresses his history with passing fancy and a buried hatchet, “please pardon my view points / Starr Status wasn’t a classic but had a few joints,” and makes no qualms about his hiatus. Square One is the only album Kenn Starr could write in order to bid farewell to days past and move forward.

With the firmest of grips on reality, Kenn Starr has kept his Low Budget Crew ties in toe, including Sean Born who makes appearances on “Product Of The Basement” and album closer, “Farewell”. Kenn also enlists Mello Music standout yU, and long time compatriot Wordsworth, as well as the lush voice of singing star Melanie Rutherford. Square One is built from the underground-up as Starr still writes from the mindset of being a product of the basement.

In the near future, Long Island rhymesayer Little Vic will be unleashing a new project made up entirely of unreleased Loosies. Isn’t that a contradiction in terms? The short answer is, yes. Rather than troubling yourself over a little bit of illogic, though, I suggest simply hitting play and vibing out to the set’s latest single, Bad Blood. Skammadix mans the boards on this boom-bap banger, layering a dusty sample over a head-noddble breakbeat as the Deep Concepts signee flaunts his mic skills and coolly dispatches the competition. Loosies as yet lacks a drop date but, if this cut’s whet your appetite for more, you can, of course, keep it locked to the Booth for further singles and release details.
