HOLLYHOCKS (Those Summers)
 My grandfather stood by his hollyhocks, his hair in a similar spire 
Just tall plants backed up against cinderblocks, a small green urban empire.
My grandmother stood in the summer sun, the fierce light fading her dress
Its pattern- a small but a busy one, 
A field under summer’s distress. 

CHORUS: I re member humidity;  I recall heat
A  burnt rural field, a  cooked city street
When air here gets thick with oncoming rain
I won’t see those summers again.
   
The beach got inviting but hot to touch. The wind warmed your face when it rose.
Familiar adults walked onto the dock with towels & way fewer clothes.
And my cousins jumped in just like maniacs,  obsessed with all things that could float,
Smiles started spreading across us all, 
As wide as that hole in the boat.

BRIDGE: But it’s summer now and I’m in love
An angel lights; it’s just a dove
This soft brown bird is what I’m thankful for.
