"Half Sick of Shadows" by The Parlour Trick

A very spare, somewhat strange theremin/singing saw piece that’ll be on the upcoming album. When Dan and I decided to make a “haunted chamber music” record together, we knew there needed to be at least one theremin/saw duet! We tried a few different things. This was the idea that stuck: two lost and lonely shades calling to each other across some vast gulf. The track was first called “Purgatory”, and then “Cleave”, before we finally settled on “Sheol” for the finalized title.

The music of Arvo Pärt, a well-known Estonian minimalist composer of sacred music, has been tintinnabulating in my heart ever since I first heard "Tabula Rasa" as a kid. Debussy once said “Music is the space between the notes.” I didn’t truly grasp that until I heard Pärt. Cage’s “4’33” conveys some of the same concepts intellectually, in a zen sort of way, but Pärt’s the one who actually got me to understand that the In-Between is where the angels hang out. 

I don’t know that I actually believe in angels, or ghosts… but I believe in the architecture of stillness. I believe in the space between the notes.
