Shock the Algorithm

revisiting an old favourite with new & improved sound quality, mixing and arrangement. This is basically a repeating chorus, which is pretty catchy, but I’d love to eventually compose the rest of this tune, and have it played by jazz musicians with live instruments one day. This is probably still one of my top 3 favourite tracks, but there’s a couple other versions I’ve posted on here - one with a saxophone playing lead melody:

Jazzy Ditty (trio - piano)

We travel alone in all the important times that we grow. We have our tribe, our friends, our family, to help us along the way. But it becomes so quiet and still when we need to truly grow. Growth and fear and grappling with the unknown in this world and in our next travels, feels highly volatile…the perplexing instability of the human life form that is neither particle nor wave, but a figment of a fraction of our time spent in this human life form. 

I cannot settle my spirit. It had known settlement and comfort, but that illusion dulled my senses, my inner thoughts and knowings. And although it brought me great pleasure and happiness for the time it was present, deep down I always grapple with our humanity and our purpose as a species…time is of no essence…the spirit lives in its own time and space.

So what am I describing in this music? What have I written?  I know exactly what I have sketched out. I’ve sketched out our infinite search for when our spirit will find a home…whether it’s beside a lake, in the eyes reflecting back at us, in the stars, in the wind whipping through our hair, in the smell of the fire, in the touch of a loved one or in the sounds of a song…our spirit dances and soars and takes infinite shapes as we journey and grow…

I write something of this journey…

   I came up with a completely different melody and arrangement. I shared it with Moza, and he recorded vocals for it. Feeling that this relatively grand song lacked something, I thought of incorporating rap. I had been impressed with Lemon Muzik's work as a track maker, so I invited him to join as a rapper. I really like his rap. Additionally, he provided backing vocals for the chorus part. 

This is a Christmas present from the three of us. Merry Christmas.

method: layering, effects, etc ... and yes, most of the melody lines start out with mi mi re ....
narration: the lure of ancient lore derives partly from all the huge gaps in the stories that allow poets to fill in whatever they consider fit. nice.  this poem centers around the mythical figure of Wodan/Odin - often regarded as an older equivalent to Hermes/Mercury (who is supposed to be all youthful) due to their inspired furors - his visit to Mimir‘s well and his two ravens whose sight spans the globe … in the case of this poem, time as well ....
