My Mistake

A couple years ago I saw SwAy perform their original of this tune live and it stuck with me. It's one of those many times where the instant i heard the song I knew I wanted to remix it. Here is the fruition of that inspiration.

Got It Baby

In Hour 2 we welcome Khruangbin , the Texan trio who take influence from 1960's Thai funk (their name literally translates to "Engine Fly" in Thai ) and include Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald “DJ” Johnson on drums. Their debut album from 2015 ‘The Universe Smiles Upon You’ is steeped in the bass heavy, psychedelic sound of their inspirations and was recorded at their spiritual home, a remote barn deep in the Texas countryside. The band listened to a lot of different types of music on the long drives out to the country but their favorites were 60s and 70s Thai cassettes gleaned from the cult Monrakplengthai blog and compilations of southeast Asian pop, rock and funk. Their mix is a sublime selection of music that includes Arthur Verocai, Return to Forever, Serge Gainsbourg, Miles Davis and some incredibly rare records from Christy Azuma, Ahmed Fakroun and Theodora Ifudu. You can catch them playing alongside Kendrick Lamar, Jamie XX and Kamasi Washington in Hyde Park, London on 2nd July, their US Tour kicks off in September and they have a remix release coming out in early June.

UPDATE: The winners of the DJ Shadow remix contest have been announced! I'm not one of them, but it was great to hear the ones that shadow picked. So glad Archive's Waltz version was in the ranks, played that on my KCRW show on Wednesday. I'm not bummed one bit, everyone who Shadow picked killed it in their own way, and since I only set out to make what I consider to be a beautiful song... I feel successful in that. Ursprünglich wollte @vitus-1 Bachhausen sich mit seinem neuesten Track musikalisch selbst therapieren: „In all meinen Arbeiten habe ich nämlich bisher immer dazu geneigt, sehr verkopft immer mehr Sound-Layers übereinander zu stapeln.“ Das fertige Konstrukt war zumeist ein relativ komplexes Gebilde, das gerade so am Rande des Chaos stand. „Jedenfalls habe ich genau das immer befürchtet. Mit diesem Track habe ich mir dann vorgenommen, deutlich klarere Strukturen zu schaffen: weniger Variation, mehr Repetition. Die Welt ist eh schon komplex genug. Nun ja, wie sich am Endprodukt zeigt, hat das nicht so wirklich funktioniert. Bis zum Schluss hin werden wieder fleißig Ebenen über Ebenen übereinander gestapelt, bis der Turm letztendlich in sich zusammen fällt.“ Getauft wurde das neue Werk mit dem Titel „Stuck In This Place“. A note about the song by singer Danny Musengo.

-Last year around this time I was talking to my therapist about a cartoon I saw as a kid, The Grasshopper and The Ant.

Even as a child I worried I was the grasshopper... playing music and gallivanting about while the ants prepared for the long winter ahead.

I explained to my therapist that I had just split with my girlfriend, left my apartment, left my job and to top it off... I had given up the one thing that kept my lifelong existential crisis at bay... alcohol. The long winter had indeed come and I was feeling more and more like the grasshopper in the story.

My therapist just looked at me knowingly and asked "Have you ever watched the cartoon until the end?" I hadn't.

"...the ants realize their lives are dull without the grasshopper and his music... so they invite him in to play for them."

This was both a relief and a revelation.

Later that night Dave and I were in the backyard taking a smoke break from a frustrating recording session. We sat silently staring at the stars for some time before Dave suggested that we put away the song we were working on and write a new one. It was 3am.

We got up and walked back down into the studio. Dave sat at the Rhodes, pressed record and started playing the giant chords you hear at the beginning of the track.

They reminded me of the story from my therapy session.

I approached the mic and started to sing.

The whole song came out in one long breath. No edits. No doubling back.

Just one clear cut message from God to the grasshopper.

“The Human Experience” is David Block’s principal project as a live
electronic composer, multi-instrumentalist, producer. Listeners
experience a delicious symphonic blend of prismatic soundscapes and
sultry beats.

David is constantly pushing the boundaries of live electronic music. Playing, composing, and conducting his own electronic symphony live on stage, his performances are brimming and layered with human emotion, world exploration, and sacred sounds. Whether performing by himself, or with a live band, “The Human Experience” always delivers an emotionally charged show.

“The Human Experience” aims to cross cultural barriers through music. David has collaborated with artists all over the world including Ignacio Perez (Buena Vista Social Club), William Close (The Earth Harp), Random Rab, Govinda, Amae Love, Rising Appalachia, and many others.

Since his debut album “Inaudible Sounds” in 2010 , he has released nine other albums and has new projects planned for release in 2020.  Each song is a sonic journey; interweaving psychedelic layers of melody and harmony with organic grooves and international vibes.

Composing and performing live with the Audio/Visual/Dance projects “Phadroid” (Andrew and Phaedra Jones), “Quixotic”, “Lucent Dossier”, and “Seraphim” David is expanding his sounds into the mixed media world.

David has performed all over the world sharing the stage with renowned artists such as, Thievery Corporation, Bonobo, Tipper, Emancipator, The Polish Ambassador, and many more.

Over the last three years he has toured in UK, Europe, Russia, Israel, Central America, Canada, and all over the United States at a variety of events including festivals like Burning Man, Boom, Coachella, Electric Forest, Wakarusa, Lightning in a Bottle, Sonic Bloom, Symbiosis, and Envision.

His music has been featured on NBC prime time TV and is beginning to make its way into the world of cinema.

David is consistently redefining himself as an artist, performer, and human being. Moving and traveling around the world, meeting people from all walks of life and realms of consciousness, he is continually learning, growing, and sharing inspiration with those around him.
